At this early stage, is it really possible to get a feel for the dog’s personality or are they all pretty much moldable with proper training, love and attention? Thanks, Mark |

I don't think their personality really shows through as much until they are up and moving around a lot. I think at 5 weeks their personalities are just beginning to show, but by 8 weeks they are sometimes completely different.
Sky was the demanding whiner in her litter, always acting like the whole world should be looking at only her. That is a good quality for a show pup though. Annoying at times, but still good. LOL She was not whiny at all from the time we brought her home though, and has grown up to be very laid back, though she still has the "hey look at me!" attitude. She is stupidly happy all the time. Dancer was the quiet pup in her litter, she is still quiet and serious now, but because she is more serious, she seems to worry more, she is protective of her family and home. That's all well and good, but she barks like a maniac if anyone comes to the door. Your breeder is the best one to let you know how each pup is developing as time goes on. The breeder will know each pup quite well, and should ask you questions about what kind of lifestyle you and the dog will be living. |
I thought that the book Good Owners, Great Dogs (Paperback), by Brian Kilcommons, Sarah Wilson had great advice for picking a puppy. He had a few techniques for learning different things about the puppy:
cradle test -- if you pick them up with one hand under front legs and one hand under butt, how much do they struggle? can it calm down and show affection? touch sensitivity -- gently squeeze webbing between toes. he says look for a dog that can take a fair amount of pressure before pulling away and who instantly forgives you after pulling away.puppies that yelp at slight pressure probably would not be good with children. sound sensitivity -- drop keys. ignoring it or startle then investigate are good. running away and staying away -- less good. attraction to people -- you and puppy alone in a room, clap your hands, see if puppy is curious and comes to you. hesitence is ok but wandering off is less good. I am not sure the link will work but if you go to amazon and search for that title, seach inside the book using words "puppy selection" and that give you a link to p. 31. Panda was nameless for a few days...but with the black ears and eyeliner we decide on Panda...so sweet and cute and cuddley...well then, a few weeks go by and she turns into a ''changling"..from sweet and cuddley to vampire and wild...soooo, her full name got changed with her..Pandemonium...she has returned to her sweet self, however, we do see the "other" in her quite often....Pandemonium..fits like a glove |
