Bailey's back legs shake, not always but frequently. Usually when he's standing. I've asked the vet but he says not to worry about it. I don't know what causes it. Sorry, I know that's not very helpful! |
Hi Stacy,
I have heard this before about other sheepies, maybe it is quite common. While asking around some say it could be signs of Hip Dysplasia or as you are wondering, Arthritis. I wouldn't worry too much however I would certainly check with your vet next time you are in, unless it gets worse. Sorry I'm not much help. Andrena |
I'm probably not a lot of help either, but my sheepie has does this a couple times and I have seen others do it as well. It is fairly common. The breeder of my dogs had an 8 (?) year old dog whose leg did that a lot, she said it was an old age thing and a frequent trait of the oe, but if yours is only 5 and it is happening a lot I would definetly get a second professional opinion - especially if it worries you. |
Luke is 8 and his back leg shakes like Elvis in Vegas. He doesn't have HD or arthritis and it bothers me but not him. It does seem to happen to many sheepies, don't know about other breeds. |

LOL. Ain't nothin' but a hound dog! The new name for leg shaking is now officially called "Elvis leg" on the OES forum! Annie's now 8 1/2 yrs and there hasn't been any change in the leg shaking since she's been 5 yrs. Unless it gets worse, I won't be too concerned about it. It doesn't bother her at all, just her Mommy. |

I have been told that the leg shake is from excitement. Some dogs have it, some don't. |
Kelseys back leg shakes too. She has done it for years, no HD there as she has been x-rayed, and no arthritis. I did take her to a chiropractor just to make sure there was nothing out of alignment in the spine, like a slipped disk or maybe something in the spine pinching the nerves all was OK. If you have any doubts just get that checked out with Annie, sometimes it might be something out there caausing the shake in the leg.
Kelsey is a jumper that is why I had it checked out!. |
I've had several OES and a lot of them would shake their legs at different times. While standing, I found it to be from excitement. When asleep, I figure they're having a dream about running. When they're awake and laying down I figure they're just shaking their leg like we do when we're laying in bed trying to go to sleep. Just a habit they've gotten into by imitating us. |

Anyone else have restless less syndrome? I get my best exercise during the night! It's a good way to stay trim! |
Stacy, I have RLS too.
Luckily with my sleeping pills I normally don't get woken up. But Pepsi who sleeps against the bed thinks it ok for his to start scratching himself and shaking the entire bed. My hubby woke up one night thinking we were having an earthquake...lol |
Can you explain what Restless Leg Syndrome is? I've seen the commercials, but they don't give a very big picture.
Do your legs just shake on their own? Are you "compelled" to move or shake them constantly? I had an unclde who would shake his leg at his desk all day, we always thought it was just a nervous habit. Do they or you move them just a little bit, or is it like riding a bike? Thanks |
Ron,
With RLS your legs tense up and you have the need to move them. It is very hard to get comfortable when you are constantly moving your legs. Sometimes they come in the form of craps, sometimes like pins and needles. Ron wrote: Can you explain what Restless Leg Syndrome is? I've seen the commercials, but they don't give a very big picture. Hope you mean Cramps Elissa |
Hahahaha...I'm pretty sure she did, Lisa. I had to laugh at that one too! |
LOL Elissa is going to die when she sees that she wrote "craps".
My RLS doesn't bother me during the day. I had a sleep study a number of years ago. They determined that I moved my foot 80 times in an hour. This was enough to kick me out of my REM sleep (deep sleep cycle) 80 times! The medication hasn't worked well for me. |
Oops, good one Elissa! How embarrassing!!! My spelling has been disgusting lately. Sorry. I have to learn to proof read... |
Our Maggie is almost 8 years old and her back legs have been shaking when she sleeps for about 3-4 years. Like others have mentioned, it doesn't bother her, but it drives me crazy, especially at night. But, hey, she's worth it. Sleeps smack dab between my husband (of 34 years) and I and we just pat her gently until she stops. |
