Along came Maggie and although she had no problem jumping in the back of the truck, even for short trips to the vet or groomer, she would pee or do her business there. With a view to obedience trials in the spring I knew I had to do something; Barney tolerated a crate but couldn't jump into the back of the truck and with artificial knees I'm not supposed to lift more than 50 pounds. And Maggie won't even stick her head inside of a crate, even with hot dog treats in there. Enter my trainer: "I'll have them going in there in 10 minutes." And he did - no treats involved, no coercion of any kind, just praise and encouragement. That took place yesterday. This morning they both rode to the groomer in their new crates for the first time. Why are you pulling on that leash? You said "Stay," so I'm not moving until you give me another command. Hey this is all right, eh Barney. A free ride in our own den - It's the American way. |
