Now we have been battling fleas for a couple of months now but we seem to have gotten on top of them. We bought flea spray for the house and flea shampoo for her and washed her regularly to kill the fleas on her and it seems to have worked. My husband decided to clip her down again (her fur wasn't that long as we clipped her a few months back) basically to make sure there aren't any fleas hiding in her fur and we've noticed that her skin is extremely scaly. She's always had problems with dry skin but I've never seen it this bad. I spoke to my mom about it and she said that overwashing can cause dry skin but we've really not been washing her that much. I think I've heard that fleas can sometimes irritate the skin too but she's had fleas in the past and her skin's never looked like this. Hope someone can help on this issue! Jess and Zippy |

I guess one of the questions would be how severe is the scaling? Just flakes of skin or are you experiencing open wounds. Does your dog seem to be uncomfortable?
If it's more on the mild side, especially since it's the winter too and dry, I would try an oil supplement that you can buy at your local pet store. There are a few brands and you can find it in either the supplements or grooming aisle. They worked wonders on my passed OES that had a dander problem. If it doesn't improve in a couple of weeks I would contact your vet. |
It's nothing severe like open wounds, but it's more like really really bad dandruff. She's had dandruff in the past but nothing this bad. She isn't really itching more than she normally does. When we brush her with the soft brush it looks like she's snowing from her back.
Are the oil supplements topical? Something like that might work for her. I wasn't aware that they made things like that for dogs. |
I give my dogs an omega 3 & 6 supplement, it comes in a chewable capsule and they love them. There is a product called Wonder 8 that you can get at a beauty supply store, it's a hair conditioning product that you spray on (lightly, so you don't end up with greasy hair) but does help with dry skin. If you can't find Wonder 8 try Avon Skin-So-Soft, just dilute one tablespoon per gallon of water and use as an after bath rinse or spray lightly several times a week. Have you ruled out allergies?

There is a product called Show Groom Conditioner by Mr. Groom it has Mink Oil in it, Vitamin E and a Sunscreen. It does not build up in the coat and comes in a spray can and is just sprayed onto the coat in a little amount and just groomed through. It is great for dander in the coat as it helps the skin without having to then wash the coat all over as some products make the coats very oily.
Provided it is not caused by flea allergy, then that's another story!!! The product is from the states and the web site is www.mrgroom.com Also your mum could be right sometimes washing them all over toooo much can have a very drying affect and maybe not rinsing all the shampoo out can cause dander and dry skin. As long as it is not allergy related. And also as bestdogx4 suggested get the dog onto omega 3&6 supplements as they help the skin a lot |
The oil supplements I had given my dog were oral. One type I used for a while were capsules that looked like fish oil and the other was an oil I used to just put in his food which he loved because that also I guess tasted like fish. I'm sorry I can't remember which brand but we went from flakey dander to none at all in no time at all.

mink oil is WONDERFUL! Works esp. great if you want the coat to look shiny and "calm down" a little ...though a lot of people like their OES' to look poofy (mr. j doesn't, I do). |
Thanks for all the great help on this. I do not believe it's allergies because she's never had anything this bad before. My husband thinks it could be the air in our house because he said there are times when all she wants to do is just go and lay outside (and it's been pretty darn cold recently!).
The oil supplements... can they just be purchased at any pet store? We will be going to the pet store in the next couple of days and will check. |
This is kind of the supplement I was talking about which can pretty much be found at any pet stores.
http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_ ... 6496104692 But I used to buy in bulk from Dr Fosters Smith and here is the brand that worked great for me (ironic that they have a sheepdog in the pic) http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 001+113739 I don't think I ever used the whole recommended dosage they suggested on the bottle. ~VerveUp |
I use the fish oil softgels from Natures Bounty. You can get them at any major drugstore chain like CVS. I don't use the liquid because with 4 dogs I don't know who gets how much, and they think they're getting treats |
Do you use salmon oil or cod liver oil Holly? |
Actually it's just called fish oil. It seems to be working already on Luke and Rosco who both have dry skin due to hypothyroidism. They come in bottle of 180 for about $13-$14. |
My dog Monty just went to the vet yesterday for a check-up. He was a rescue dog and a stray for most of his life? Anyway, he had fleas, was treated, but now itches and scratches and his skin became scaly in some areas. The vet said that he has a secondary skin infection from scratching the unhealed, bitten areas. He gave him a shot of steroids and some medicine to take. Believe it or not he seems to be doing much better and its only been a day! |
