I Thought Blue Had Passed Away :O(

What can I say about Blue..loveable grumpy old Blue who lives for balls, rough housing with Merlin and food. Nope his age doesn't stop him for inhaling his food even at his age. I honestly forget if he's approaching his 16th or 17th birthday soon. I knew him when he was a little baby as he was adopted by my neighbors at 8 or 10 wks. Back then his body was silver and only his head and paws were black. The black on his head came to a point giving him a Spock like appearance. I'd often have him over to play with Shaggy as I felt for the little tyke always left outside even at a few months old. A year or two later I found out he'd been given to an animal shelter and by then I moved and picked him up and brought him home with me. He wasn't that cute silver haired pup anymore but more black with white ticked fur and he wasn't socialized with other dogs. I am still amazed it took him 15 or 16 years (until Merlin came along) that he learned to play. Shaggy and Blue used to chase each other the occasional time but he and Merlin rough house. Until last year he had never done that his entire life. Anyhow back to the story..apologies as I'm rambling.

Every morning Blue and his brothers get highly excited when they hear me retrieve the kibble box. I use a large plastic container to pour out their ration and it makes a lot of noise with the kibbles against the plastic. This morning, Blue didn't run into the kitchen - his eating area. I go check. He's laying motionless on the computer room floor. I shake the box. Nothing. I call his name. Nothing. Now I'm getting really scared. I gently touch his paw and call his name louder. Nothing. I feel as if I can't breathe and want to yell for my son.

I touch his back - again nothing...I see his eyelashes flicker ever so slightly and now his paws appear to move..as if he's running. A thousand things run through my mind...perhaps he had a stroke? He finally opens his eyes and groans. It takes him a while to get up and I'm still concerned. Suddenly he sees the kibble box and races in the kitchen.

Whew! I feel relieved as seems this old boy never ages but for today. Today, for a brief moment I saw him for the old guy he is and glad I have him for a bit longer. I also noticed that in his recent photos his eyes looked blue when they are brown. His eyesight is dimming and his body is feeling the effects of his age. I'm just glad I have him for a bit longer.

Phew, what a scare!

Like you say, I'm glad you have him for a while longer.
OMG. How scary! I actually had a similar thing happen with our family dog, Baxter. He was 17 yrs old at the time and I was dog sitting. (He moved in with my sister when she bought a house.) Baxter was sitting on couch sleeping. I called my dogs to let them out and Baxter just stayed put... Sleeping while my two were running and barking. I went over...said his name.....nothing, I then called him louder and still nothing.
I then walked over and had to shake him awake. I was totally freaked out. When he woke up, he jumped and looked at me like I did something wrong. ( I know if anything had happened my sister would have blamed me. ) I was so relieved, I sighed so loud that it woke Billy up... He was sleeping on the other couch.
I don't think Blue has any plans to go anywhere anytime soon. In his heart he's still a puppy and that will keep him going.....And of course he's got his Mama :D
I don't know what to say, it would of terrified me. Thank goodness blue is OK. Hugs to you and blue
How weird, this is almost the exact same story my trainer told me yesterday about his dog Yukon. Turns out he's "just" almost completely deaf now.

I know that fear since Calvie Kitty is 18-5/6 and I am happy/relieved that Blue is still with us.

Give him a hug and a kiss from me then tell him to give one back to you.
Wow Mariane, what an awful feeling!

Winston gave me a scare like that once, he is only 6 and at the time he was only 3 but he did the same thing. I felt like my heart was in my throat. I started bawling when he moved and hugged him so much, he must have thought I was crazy.
 awww...... hugs to you and blue. Why can't they just stay young FOREVER?
What a terrible scare! Sounds like he was sleeping very soundly and maybe dreaming?

I know the feeling. Mom's Tibetan is 12 and blind. She sleeps so soundly now and doesn't react as quickly as she once did. I stayed over at Mom's while she was out of town to watch Pandy. I had to touch her to make sure she got up.

Glad Blue is okay!
Aww Marianne, a little while longer...why cant you make it last???? He looks fantastic for an "old man"...I hope I grow old that gracefully....

Panda girl sends big wet ones to him and she says blue eyes are in..and that people mistake her for being blind too......
Thanks to all of you for your responses.

Blue is basking in the adoration while I'm still shaking over that experience. You guys are wonderful!!

Oh, how awful! I have several older dogs and fear their last days. Since I've all but promised myself and husband we will not get more dogs, their passing will be more painful.

One thing I've noticed with truly dead dogs, they immediately feel different. They have no muscle resistance, they more more like a lump. So as long as they "feel" right to the touch, they are probably still with you.

I'm going out now and giving each a giant hug and good rubby.
What a frightening experience! So glad to hear Blue
is ok. Please give him a big hug for us !
Marianne, so sorry you had to go through this but so glad Blue is okay, at least for the time being! :D Having a senior myself, I live with this dread every day. I wish there was a magic potion to keep them with us longer!
Chris
Thanks again for all your comments. While we always think we prepare ourselves for the inevidable we really can't in some ways. With Shaggy, it was different as I saw her health declining fast her last six months and having many reprieves, I think I was as prepared as much as I could be. With Blue, due to his energizer bunny like personality, that incident came as a shock as it's easy to forget how old he is sometimes. That incident sort of opened up my eyes as to how aged he is as I tend to put it out of my mind most days. I appreciate all your comments very much and will give Old Blue a big hug from all of you.

Marianne when you get to be 67 you'll understand. Things don't always start working in the morning like they used to :D

Glad to hear Blue us Ok. Give his an extra hug for me.
You made me tear up Marianne, glad he was okay, and hopefully he doesn't scare you like that again for a long while yet.
Gosh what a fright!! I would've been in tears, too. I'm so glad he's okay and still with you for now. Would that we could keep them young forever. :?
It's so scary when the hearing is going and they don't move around as much as they used to. Good ole Blue I'm glad he's still with you!
(((Big hugs))) What a scare that must have given you. I'm glad he decided to stick around a while longer. :)
