Michael Vale, known to many millions as Dunkin Donuts' "Fred the Baker", famous for saying "It's time to make the donuts" died on Christmas Eve. He was 83. Joan and I met Michael in 1988, while on a business trip. As a food supplier to Dunkin Donuts, Joan attended their regional franchisee convention on St. Thomas, and I accompanied her. Joan and I were fortunate to share a fabulous lunch on St. John's Island at a table for four with Michael and his wife Nancy. He regaled us with stories, mostly about his pet parakeet "Boo" who he claimed had a vocabulary of over 1400 words. Some of his stories were of being an actor, and I asked him how long he had taken to become an overnight success. He chuckled and said: "35 years." I hope that he and Boo are reunited and chatting away. |

Hi Ron and Joan,
My condolences to you both. I didn't know of him until your post but what a infectious smile he had and you all look so wonderful together in your photo. When the world loses someone like him it's truly a loss. Marianne and the boys |
How sad.
"Time to make the doughnuts" is a common saying around here. I'll think of him. (no we don't make doughnuts, just an expression to get something done.) sheepieboss |
Loved that guy. What a nice story Ron that you got to have dinner with him. I had heard on the news that he went to acting school with a lot of famous movie actors. |
"Time to make the Donuts" is also a common saying in my house!! Even though donuts are not often eaten here I can't count the morning I drag myself out of bed muttering that phrase!!!! I didn't realize he would have been that old! How interesting that you and Joan actually got to meet him!!!!!! |
"Time to make the Donuts" is popular in our house too. I think anyone who has to get up in the dead of night to shuffle off to work can relate to that statement! Thanks Ron, this was a nice tribute to Mr. Vale. |
I said that saying every night that I got up with Hayley when she was smaller. I'd say "Time to make the Donuts" as I was mixing her formula.
I really miss not seeing his commercials. I also miss the Dunkin Donuts Coffee (No Dunkin Donuts shops in the entire state of CA) |
