Xmas Puppy!

Wilson has arrived! He is 14 weeks old and, so far, has been great -- but we have only had him for 3 days! A few questions for you. He is great with us all, but seems to be particularly fond of my husband - the only other male in the household. He follows him everywhere, etc. But, while he will slobber all over my daughters and me, and jump up on us every so often, he will not do that to my husband. Is this a male dominance thing? Also, he does cry at night in his crate -- which is normal for a puppy - but can you give us any feedback on how long it takes until they get the concept of "lights out" means sleeping!? Thanks.

Congrats!
I'm not sure the pup will have formed any ideas yet as to the hierarchy in your home. Probably he is just trying to get to know everyone.
As to the whining in the crate, that may take a few days, or it might not, every pup is different. I find the easiest way is to put the crate beside your bed so you can reach down and reassure him. This doesn't have to be a permanent arrangement.
I used a wind up travel alarm lying on the floor next to Barney's crate. The ticking really calmed him down.
