Welcome to everybody

I just want to say "Welcome, Friends!" to everybody who takes the time to join this community.

I don't know how popular this forum will or won't be, I guess that's up to all of us, and to me to attract other good people here.

I'll do my best to provide a fun place to gather, to learn from one another, and to share our experiences.

If you have any suggestions on anything, including (especially?) how to attract other Sheepie lovers here, please feel free to post here, or to drop me a line at Ron@oes.org.

Again....
Welcome, Friends!

-Ron.

Thanks!

Did I do it myself? Well, I'd love to be able to take the credit for the programming, but no, I've only made a tweak or two here and there. This bulletin board system is phpbb2, by www.phpbb.com. It is free. I have it running on my UNIX based webhost, that also hosts my regular www.oes.org website. I agree, this stuff is amazing!

As far as it working better than Yahoo, I think that may be true, because it allows for subjects, and replies within the subject, and allowing for people to receive an email only when their subject of interest is replied to. On the other hand, I don't have millions and millions of existing visitors (like Yahoo does) to generate a substantial membership in the forum. It's been open a week, and there are 15 members so far (including my wife Joan and myself).

So, time will tell.

Thanks again for your kind words, and WELCOME!
-Ron.

BTW, Of course, a public endorsement of the forum by a respected member of another list might encourage other people to check us out and join, so thanks for doing that! ;) )
I also want to add my comments on this forum - it is excellent, and I do hope it continues to draw OES owners from other places. Seems like it is very hard to find other Sheepie owners out there on the web. I will do my best to guide those I know in this direction.

Hi everyone, this is my first time on this site and it had been a blast. I have been on the internet for nearly a year researching OES dogs I don't know how I missed you. Reading some of the messages though have got me a little concerned. I have a male OES arriving in about 6 wks. I had no idea that they smelled! I am a bit of a clean freak and realized I would have to keep up with grooming and bathing but the odour some people have talked about surprises me. I also wonder if you can tell by 6-8wks old which ones will be droolers. I would rather pick a pup that isn't a big time drooler. What I had read was there chin gets discoloured due to getting wet when the drink and they are not known to be heavy droolers like the ST. Bernard.

Well great site and hope to here some advice.

Sincerely

Sarah Lou[/b]
In general, Sheepies do not seem to be big droolers. The only time Jake really drools is when he sees food, but not when he is just waiting for his dinner. In fact , we knew medication was not agreeing with him when he caused him to drool a lot.
We adopted Jake when he was almost three, so I do not know about puppy smells. We started bathing Jake once a week, but then the vet noticed his skin and coat were very dry. We dropped his baths down to once a month and that seems to keep the doggie smells away. Jake is not a water-lover, so that keeps him fresher-smelling longer, also.
I think you can tell from the visitors to this forum that Sheepies are a great breed. Hope you enjoy your Sheepie puppy. If you live near New England, please do consider visiting on of the New England OES REscue functions. There is an auction and potluck lunch on Sat. Oct. 19 near Dedham, MA. (Unfortunately Sheepies are not allowed inside the church hall where it is held). And there is an annual picnic held around June 8 in Bozrah, CT (near Norwich) to which Sheepies are more than welcome (and wanna-be Sheepies, also!). Check out www.neoesr.org for more info on joining. It costs $20/year and you get jam-packed, fun and informative newsletter every 2 months. Sorry, I did not mean to be so long-winded. Have fun. Just by the fact you have been doing so much research indicates you will be a caring and responsible owner. Keep the forum updated as to the new member to your family. When you have photos, contact the Webmaster (Ron@oes.org). He loves to put new photos in the OES Photo Gallery and people love to visit!
I want to place a digit al photo in that "Avatar" space. As long as it isn't over 150 kb, could I just upload one of my digitals. I guess I am asking, what is an Avatar? Is it a special format or would any jpeg do?

I love the forum too! Just sign up 2 days ago, but its been a nice resource for me.
I was searching google for "whitening old english sheepdog beard" and stumbled into this forum. This is a wonderful forum and I'm glad I stumbled here :D
I registered last night and it is now almost 2:30AM and I'm still reading the posts...

Hi Augustus!

Do I need to add a disclaimer that "reading the forum can be addictive" or "loss of sleep may occur"? Well, I hope you don't get into trouble being bleary-eyed during the day  .

Welcome to the forum, you've come at an exciting time!
This is a truly wonderful site. I enjoy reading all the posts and I love looking at the pictures of other sheepies, they are all so adorable! Do you plan to have a sheepie chatroom sometime in the future?
I'm sure it will be a very popular~This is I first come here,I think it is so good!
I hope one day I can own a OES ,but in China, this kind is very small, and the price is too expensive to buy. ai~~
i love this site. i joined about 2 weeks ago. i had also joined another site but unsubscribed due to all the junk mail and personal goings ons there. this is full of information and has helped me make my decision in getting an oes. we will pick him or her out next week, then will wait until we can bring the baby home.
Found your site while looking for a list of possible medical problems with OES. Recently had my female (Lizzie) spayed and the vet found cysts. All is well, but I thought I'd better check to see what problems are common to the breed. I'm finding lots of info on here! A lot of things I've already learned from Liz also! Sheepies are the best dog I've ever been around. My parents were Collie nuts, my husband preferED Labs. They are all amazed at the demeanor and personality of our Liz! :D
Brenda M and Lizzie
Welcome to the forum Brenda and Liz :D
It is great to have you here. I am owned by Jack and Annabelle and then 4 cats and a turtle. I guess I should mention I am also trained very well, by my 2 uprights a 6year old girl and 4 year old boy. This is a great place for advice and just hearing all the funny stories our sheepies can do.
I am glad that the cysts were nothing to be concerned about.
How old is Liz? There is a topic in general chit chat and then at the top called sheepie survey. A member Lil Walty set that up awhile ago and it is a way to tell all about your sheepie. I love going back to it and re reading old posts.
We are glad to have you here, Stormi and co.

Hi Aleyona, Brenda and Liz,

Glad you decided to join us and you've probably seen by now how friendly and helpful everyone is here. It's a great place!

I'm looking forward to hearing about your Furballs.

Marianne
Hi all,
Just wanted to re-introduce myself. I'm Kim and I have a 19month old sheepie, Merlin, I also have 4 uprights ages 6-11. Some of you might remember a lost sheepie in February. That was us. Merlin was found 4 days after being lost by the groomer and he is fine. He is a bit more nervous than he was before but he is the dream companion for us. Everyday he makes us laugh. When he was younger we had some behavior issues with him(marking in the house, trying to be dominant) but now all that has stopped. I have to say tho he is one calm dog...unless you mention "playtime" and then WATCH OUT! He is one huge ball of fur flying! :D
Kim and Merlin,

How wonderful to have you back! Yes, I remember you and poor lost Merlin. I still think of how he is doing. It is nice to have you back, jump right in and start telling us your wonderful Merlin stories!

8) Hi All,
This is my first post. I just became the proud owner of "Pepsi" (My 6 yr old son named him) last Friday. We rescued Pepsi from the local shelter after his owners went in to a nursing home and the neighbor brought him to the shelter. Pepsi is a 10 mos old Male....though the shelter had him listed as 5 yrs old and neutered....he was neither. He is at the vet today being neutered. I grew up with a Sheepdog, but this is the first time I have been around one since I was 12 yrs old.
So far so good. He has been getting along with my other two dogs for the most part. I have a 4 yr old German Shepherd "Harley" that we rescued when he was 1 1/2 yrs old and a 5 yr old Toy Poodle, "Peanut". Harley has the need to show Pepsi this is his house first... but Peanut and Pepsi have bonded. Peanut has seizure and had one the other day. Pepsi climbed up on the couch with him and licked his face all through the seizure. My husband was floored by this behavior. He could not believe another dog was taking care of Peanut let alone being so gentle....and a puppy this gentle.
Pepsi has really bonded with me and is constantly by my side. He wants to lay on my lap and I keep pushing him off my lap. Next to me is perfect, but he thinks he is a lap dog at 48.5 lbs....uh no...especially since I am 7 1/2 mos pregnant. Even though he has only been here a couple of days He has brought us so much joy!
We are very happy to have him with us.
I am happy that the 2 weeks in the shelter really had no negative effects on him besides diarrea. Which finally subsided yesterday. For some reason the shelter insisted on placing a hold on him for 2 weeks. There was no Vet at the shelter... Obviously because they would have been able to tell he was a puppy and not neutered. So I am not sure why this was done. Hopefully his memory of it will soon disappear.
A wonderful woman from the local rescue whom I met at the shelter was able to find out the info on Pepsi about how he arrived at the shelter, his age and his name...which was Clyde.
Well I am very happy to be here and I think I've done enough babbling for one day!

Pepsi's Mommy (Elissa)
Welcome to you and Pepsi!

You will be so happy you found this wonderful spot on the web! It is full of advice, and questions and someone with the same issues that you may have.

I also recently adopted a female from So Cal, about 4 months ago. She is the most wonderful dog you can imagine. I had two already and my mom was "sold" on the breed, decided she too wanted one. I found Daisy or as I like to call her, Lovey at the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. They are the most amazing creatures as you can imagine already. My Tyler also thought he was a lap dog at 70+ pounds, but once he KNEW that he was in his furever home, that subsided, he is now just content to be in constant contact with me and this is after nearly 8 years.

I love each of my furry ones and wouldn't trade them for all the money in the world! I'm a jewelry artist and I frequent this rock and gem shop, the owner has offered me anything in the store I want if he can have Tyler. The answer is always the same. NO! But you can pet him if you like.

Enjoy Pepsi and come back often to tell us of his adventures with your family, we all look forward to each and every story that is told. Also, they will encourage you to share photos too! Just a warning

Luck and best wishes
Welcome Pepsi!!! It's great that you adopted a sheepie, now you got a friend for life.

TylersMom pretty much said everything, so welcome and don't be afraid to ask any questions. Someone always has something to say that will respond to any question you got, and don't forget to post pictures and brag about what Pepsi is doing!
Welcome, welcome to all new uprights owned by sheepies!! This forum is the best place to learn all about our furbabies. No question too small, no problem too big! There will always be someone who has "been there, done that" and can offer invaluable advice.

Pictures are always appreciated!! I still have a digital camera on my Christmas wish list so I can post pics of my beautiful "baby" girl, Drezzie.

Come back often and be prepared to LOVE this place!

Chris
:D Thank You Everyone for your wonderful welcome.
I just wanted to let you all know that Pepsi had no problems with his surgery yesterday. Today he is back to bouncing around again....and trying to hump Peanut. I guess it takes a while for the hormones to get out of the system. He was up all night last night. I guess because he had been sleeping most of the day yesterday. He finally learned how to use the dog door, but instead of going outside to do anything he just kept walking out the door and walking back in. All I heard last night was the flapping of the dog door and the giggle of his tags. I have kept him up all day so I am sure he will sleep tonight.
He did have a couple of accidents in the house last evening and even threw up... Also diarrhea was back. I am sure it was from the anesthesia.
Everything is back to normal now.
Take Care,
Elissa
I can't seem to put a picture in my profile. I try but it tells me its too big. I don't know that much about these things. I wonder if someone can help me. Thanks to all that make this forum great . :)

Blue Star's Mom
I'm interested in buying a sheep dog for my wife for christmas because she loves these sheep dogs but is worried about how bad do they shed . If I could please get some info on these dogs that would be great.
Hi guest and welcome to the forum.

Below is a link of a few searches with shedding talked about in the topic. It seems a lot of have not experienced shedding with our sheepdogs except during the normal puppy stage when the puppy coat blows to make room for the adult, however some dogs will shed more than others when certain things such as genetics and enviroment come into play.

I would recommend going to www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org for information about the breed. There's alot to consider when deciding on this breed. There's a great pamphlet "About the Breed" that you should read carefully. OES are a wonderful breed - but they are NOT for everyone!

Please be sure to select a reputable breeder as well - there have been several recent OES bought through Petstores that are DEAF (a common problem when bred irresponsibly). There are other significant health concerns that you should be aware are common if careful breeding is not done - including temperment / agression problems).

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Kristen, Presley, and Sydney
I now have a picture of Blue Star. Once we figured it out it just popped onto my last post. This is great!
Hello Everyone!

This is my first time posting here, excellent site btw, I have spent the last two days reading probably every post on here. LOL I have also spent the last two days inbetween laughing and crying (very heart breaking stories unfortunately)

I have wanted an OES to love since I was very young. Having grown up and raising a family, i couldnt justify spending the money for an OES (until your site, i didnt know there were any that needed rescue!) 2 years ago we lost our beloved german shepard Nuno, she had been with us for 14 years and grew up with the kids, then last summer we lost our angel Rosie, a cocker spaniel that was with us just 6 years. I decided to take a little time before considering another member of the family.

The kids and I were talking, and all agree that it is time to offer the love we have, and give someone a wonderful "furever" home. During the conversation, my youngest daughter who is 15, said she has always wanted an OES....... LOL my heart stopped!!! this was my chance! I cant indulge myself but my child? how could i deny her something like this!!! *grins*

Needless to say, we are soon welcoming a new member to the family. YaY!
We get to go see him sunday, and get to bring him home two weeks after. We are counting down the days, and after reading all your wonderful posts, the anticipation is killing me!!!

I hope to be back here often, more than likely with lots of questions. There seem to be a lot of amazing people here, and I would love to be a part of such a wonderful community
Welcome jst2cute!!!!

It's a great thing that you want to adopt a sheepie, rescue dogs are the best!

Let us know how it goes when your doggie comes home, and take lots of pictures.... Your dream is about to come true!
Welcome jst2cute!!!!

So glad you're finally getting your sheepie! Be prepared to never want another breed again - they steal your heart and soul and never give it back! And ya know what - I wouldn't want it any other way!!

Chris
HATS OFF TO RON FOR CREATING THIS SITE! :rimshot:

I found the forum 2 ways, 1 by searching out my breeder's name for any info on her and 2 by meeting one of her friends who is a member on the forum. This I did last year but my computer was old and tired so I waited until I got my new one to get going.

It is definitely addicting, staying up past my bedtime and enjoying it so much. I love the pictures, and love the stories that others have to tell. The information I get is very helpful also. I'm open to suggestions from others on how to do or not do something regarding my dog.

The area I live is small and OES not seen around here too often so this site is a treat to use.

I hope the forum has a long, long run.

Thanks to all who gave me and Coop such warm welcomes. To all the newbies good to have you also!!!!!!!!!!
Ron, your forum is great. Your time and effort, not to mention a few bucks, has really paid off. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of it. From the little time I been here it appears you have been able to attract some very classy folks. :cheer:
