Flea and heartworm medication?

Hi all,

I ran out of both heartworm and flea medication for Phlufie, and I figure now is the time to research the field. He is currently on Interceptor and Frontline. I wonder if other med might be better? Can you tell me what your dog is on? Do you know what med doesn't work well? Phlufie used to be on Advantix, but it didn't work well (ticks on him!!).

I saw Revolution, which treats heartworms AND flea.... but I don't think it treats as many kind as Interceptor and Frontline combined (roundworm, tape worms, etc).

I don't have any problems yet with the med he is on now, just want to see what else is out there.

Thanks, 8)
Karole

We were using Advantage but I've found with such fluffy dogs, I really don't care much for the neck drops. They did fine on it but it made the fur so hard and crunchy! We were just back at the vet the other day and switched back to plain old Heartgard. I have to say, I've never had a problem with fleas so we don't have them on anything for them.
Where are you located? Do you need those things at this time of year? (no bugs in winter)

I prefer to limit poisons, so I do not give heartworms meds at all, and I only use advantage if necessary, not every month. I only had to use it once this year.
I live in San Jose, CA. I am not sure how cold is cold enough for the flea to die, but our winter here is pretty mild.
I only use flea stuff when it is needed, frontline or advantage. We live in a high heartworm area in Melbourne so mosquitoes all year so we have an annual heartworm injection for that as I usually forget the monthly ones so the injection once a year is easier. :D
I'd consider Program or Sentinel.

I recently tried a pill called Capstar on Pud. You can give them the pill every 3 to 4 days and it only kills the adult fleas, no eggs. After two pills, Pud was pretty much flea free. Because of our temps, we tend to have them year round.
It has to below freezing for at least a week to kill the bugs.Where I live that hasn't happened in over 10 years.......Capstar will kill the fleas that are on the Baby at that time...... I have had 2 Babies have a reaction to Frontline....Almost lost one of them........ I know people that use it monthly and have never had a problem. Although I think it stops working after awhile...... The only chemicals I use are Heartguard and Clorox Bleach....... I use Diatiamias Earth in the yard, house and on the Babies.....I use the human grade not the kind for swimming pools..... I am just concerned with any chemical that warns me to use gloves while applying to the Baby..... I tend to be a little radical when it comes to chemicals and vaccinations.......Kaye
