Kaye,

I'm so sorry to hear about these two boys with HD at such a young age. I'd be interested in hearing other alternatives besides surgery as Panda was diagnosed with HD in both hips earlier in the year. He's now four and I am saving my pennies to possibly have surgery done before he gets too aged. He too starts showing signs of limping after a hard run which is why I no longer take him to the dog park instead opting for individual time without the other two.

Six months is so very young for these poor pups and how awful that some breeder is the cause of this misfortune amongst the puppies that come from her. Shame on her!

Keep us posted

Sometimes young pups will have horrible hips but will outgrow the HD when they get older. Also another option is a bilateral TPLO. It is expensive but if you can find donations that gets them back to being pups in a matter of weeks to months. There surgeries can be performed on the animal up to one year of age I believe and are really great. I have assisted in several such surgeries and seeing the dogs back during their recovery you can just tell they feel so much better..... Maybe an option???
What is a TPLO?
My girlfriends Chessie just had TPLO surgery 10 weeks ago. Jessie "The Chessie" is better than ever!!! It is truly amazing.

Here is a link that deals with TPLO... it just so happens that there is a Berner on the front.. wish I knew about this type of surgery when my Dudley had his CCL replaced.

it is pretty much a surgery where they make incisions into the hip and cut it in three places and reposition the hip around the head of the femur so that it has a better fit. Pretty much the problem with HD is that the ball and socket don't fit properly. The point of this surgery is that the surgeon can go in with minimal incision and create a better fitting cup around the head of the femur with the exsisting bones there. It is just repositioned so that the femur will no longer slip out of the socket and it will have a better hold on the femur or to just make a cup that fits over the femur where there was a very shallow or no cup at all. It takes a lot of work for both surgeon and owner. The owner has to shell out a lot of money but it is so worth it. There is also a lot of recovery involved and a lot of laying down and sleeping for the animal and tons of high end pain killers such as a fentanyl patch and other drugs to aid the recovery. Once they are threw it all, they are as good as new.
That's so sad Kaye....
How much per TPLO?

I'm sure some of the group that have had the surgery done will know more about the cost.I think it varies by the section of the country that you live in and who does it......Since the 2 Vets we use are Texas A & M Vets we are going to try and have them do it...If the boys are canidates for the TPLO it is much cheaper and the recovery time is faster.......Won't know until we have the completer workup.........In the mean time we are give giving them meds to help with the inflamation and pain......Sheepie Hugs, Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue
Yea it does vary depending on where you are and also what vet you go to. Around the san francisco bay area I believe it runs about $4000 per side. Im sure though that if you take them to the vet school, it would be cheaper since it would be a teaching case for the vet students to learn from.
As for the traditional hip surgery (which I realize is what Panda will eventually need due to his age) I have been quoted as 2000 per hip. I think the TPLO is far better and from what I've read the sucess rate is very good. Wish Panda was a candidate but I know even if age weren't a factor I would be unable to lift this boy.

Just a question, when you say they are from a breeder you know, is this a bad breeder that you are aware of or a "real" breeder who is having pups with this medical problem?

Hopefully these pups will be able to live a good life with the proper medical intervention.
Good luck!
Hi Kaye-
I'm sorry to hear about Joe Bob and the newest sheepie. A teaching hospital may offer the best prices on surgery and some of the most experienced doctors overseeing it.

Please note that with a TPO you may only have a small window of opportunity. It needs to be done while the puppy is still growing and before bone changes have taken place. Panda, at just over 9 months old, was no longer a candidate for a TPO because of bone changes. So the next option would most likely be an FHO where the femural head is removed... but for now anyway nothing is required beyond a buffered aspirin and Cosequin DS. Our vet said the other day that surgery may never be required... we hope that's the case.

I really hope these two boys will do well.

PS- Darby had surgery last Wednesday to remove a tumor (that's her with the santa hat on). She had run into a bush branch last month that caused a small puncture wound on her neck/chest and it wouldn't heal even with antibiotics and ointment. So the vet surgically removed it and he called today with the results. Thankfully is was benign (thank you God!). She's got about a 3" incision on her chest with wire sutures... all from a small wound. Thank goodness for doggie insurance because the bill came to over $500. She is also the proud owner of three velux blanket jackets to prevent her from scratching. (The girls had put holes in the blanket so at least I got some use out of it!) Ah... my sewing talents at work again. The vet actually laughed at it 8O  but said to keep putting it on her because it does protect the wound. (My shirts didn't come up high enough on her neck and she kept reopening the wound by scratching it... I had to do something!) She should be good as new soon... still the same trash talker she always was. By the way, she says to tell grandma hi
I'm sorry to hear about your baby. My youngest sheepie (1 yo) also has HD, but the orthopedist wants to wait a bit before we do surgery. I've been giving her a sodium hyaluronate gel that has made a huge difference in her limp; as a matter of fact you can't tell she even has a limp. The name of the stuff is Conquer K9. It’s a beef flavor gel and Jaycee loves it. Maybe it would help him feel better until you decide about surgery.

What do you do when you get a rescue from a breeder you know Kaye?
I was just as Passionate as a Breeder as I am about Rescue... !!!!!!!! There is Disapointment when you find out that someone has just told you what you wanted to hear............I got involved with this situation before the puppy Parent even got the Baby......There were problems then.....Switching pictures on the website.Changing order of who has first choice......Long Story!!!!!!!!! I can't stop people from breeeding!!!!!!! I can't stop people from buying!!!!!!! You can talk until you can't talk anymore trying to protect people.......But, If they have Puppy Fever they are going to get a Baby anywhere they can..... Kaye
Oh noooo
It's that baby?!
I'm so sorry.
Yes, Jaci That Boy.....You know how hard I tried to stop it from the start... But, No one will listen until they are in trouble......Then they will listen.... Puppy Fever!!!!!!! Sometimes I just reach a point of saying "Why even try"????? They talk about educationing the general public ...... There are too many fronts to this War to fight..... Puppymills, Commercail breeders, Irresponsible Breeders, ........Impulse buying, Throw Away World ...... Very Frustrating to say the least...... Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
I know Kaye... you witnessed my frustration. You tried very hard to dissuade this purchase and from what I had heard the whole thing was a mess from the day he was picked up.

BUT, I have to say this...
This little boy would have had this problem with HD no matter where he ended up! By the time they exist it's too late to go back. He's got a chance at a good future. I know it's tiresome having to clean up after uninformed, misinformed, ill-advised, ignorant, cruel, negligent, indifferent people in our throw away society. When they land in a good forever home though, it's worth all the work and heartache. By the way, I heard from Pat yesterday... Cody (Jeffrey) is at 64 pounds and is doing great with his buddy Wiley :D
There is a significant difference between a TPLO and a TPO.

I believe for the dogs with CHD, you are referring to the TPO. ?? Other options include the FHO, THR, TPO, Darthroplasty, etc. Please discuss surgical options with your BCO.

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is for canine cruciate repair. In layman's terms; think lower portion of femur

TPO (Triple Pelvic Osteotomy) is for canine hip dysplasia. (pelvis/femur) In layman's terms think upper portion of the femur and pelvis

One of my fosters just had the TPO as she was diagnosed with severe HD. She showed all the classic signs if CHD prior to x-rays at a very young age as most dogs with CHD do.

The surgery was performed on 13 January and she is now 3 weeks into her recovery. If someone is interested in learning more about the TPO surgery, healing process and therapy needed, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Hi Nancy-
Thanks for the clarification. I was wondering what the addition of the "L" meant. So the TPLO is a completely different surgery... around the knee instead of the hip?

I hope Gertie is improving daily. She is a very lucky sheepie-girl to have had the TPO surgery. A sincere thanks for making a big difference in the lives of some very special sheepies. You've got a good heart :D
