sigh....it just never ends

every once in a while i take walter to a groomer so he looks nice and fluffy... i decided to take him to the academy of dog grooming where students work on him.. they usually do a really nice job and its pretty cheap. ive taken him there 3 times before and every time theyve complimented how nice/pretty he is.

this time when i picked him up i was informed that hes not allowed back unless he gets tranquilized. appearantly he was 'unruly' 'out of control' 'skittish' and 'traumatized' (yea right he just doesnt like blow dryers!)

hes usually a bit nippy when i brush him but after a while he calms down and even rolls on his back so i can brush his belly.

what should i do!!!
they said i need to bring him there once a month for him to get used to it but the lady that was telling me all this was really rude and condescending so im not sure if she has our best interest in mind...

Sorry to hear that.... Pisco just loves to be brush but doesn`t care much for the blow dryier either...so what I started doing is drying my hair with it with hm in the same roon and sometimes just blow some air on his back and continue with mine...just as if we were playing ..and guess what now he is starting to like it since he thinks I am playing with him.
I really don`t think that once a month will do it..since for them the sense of time is longer than for us.... what I do with Pisco is go to the groomers every week just for a visit..stay with him for some time...give him treats over there and have the groomer play with him a bit..get him to know the place to make himm feel comfortable in that space ...and it works very much, he likes to go there...I do the same with the vet`s place so when I take him there for the real stuff he is Ok.
Poor Walter! No wonder he was agitated- that woman sounds unbelievably rude. Have you looked into other options? Maybe a private groomer who works from home- they're often cheaper than salons and just as good!

I was talking to a neighbour of mine a few weeks ago and she told me that she took her dog (a spaniel) to a groomer. As my friend was talking to the groomer, the dog did something- not sure what, exactly- and the groomer slapped him across the back- hard! If she had done that with the owner standing right there, what would she have done to the poor thing if he were on his own?

Anyway- if you didn't like the way you were treated at a hair salon- if the staff were rude- you wouldn't go back. Have you complained to the head of the faculty? Remember, you are doing these people a service by allowing them to *practice* on Walter. Neither he nor you deserve to be treated in this way.

You're better off without them.
The grooming academy doesn't deserve to work on Walter. He was probably acting normally for a sheepie (mine is invigorated after a bath and runs around and attacks the towels) and they just didn't understand it.

It sounds as though you have to find a groomer that is used to sheepdogs and their antics. I went to three different groomers before I found one that Baxter (my sheepie) and I were comfortable with. And unfortunately, she just went out of business so I will be bathing/grooming Baxter until I find another groomer that we are happy with.
My max hates when I groom him, he thinks its a game were playing! But the shop i took him last month, said he was just great! she recommend that when I groom him to put him ontop of table, and I have tried that once and it seemed to help. He loves the blowdryer whenI'm using it, but when its his turn, its non stop barking! then its 20 laps around the house rubbing everything in site :)

Walter looks beautiful though! My sheepie has a very brown chin! Peroxide and Water seems to help though.
Shanti doesn’t like the dried. Even when I dry my hair he starts barking. He loves when I brush his hair. When he sees me with his brush, he starts to do jump, and run as a mad dog-- a happy dog.

Regarding the grooming academy: if somebody is not nice with dogs, dogs won't be nice with that person also.

During Shanti first year, I took Shanti to a Vet. He grooms also. This vet was ok with Shanti, and they loved each other, but with the other vet were different. I learnt that she hit Shanti once because "he didn't behave"...
The last time that I went to that place was when Shanti didn't want to go inside (very odd of him), he was on the floor very stubborn. I realized that he didn't like the Vet's partner.

Anyway, maybe is not Walter fault, might be the person that groomed him.
thanks for all the encouragement, i felt pretty upset when the lady was telling me all these things but after i cooled down i realized it was actually pretty funny. walter is just too much for them!

i was thinking that i would start grooming walter on my own every other week or so and then when he starts to behave for me then i can go to a groomer... or do you think its a better idea to just keep being persistent and taking him to a groomer so that he can get used to them first?
Ok something is wrong with Barkley..........he likes the blow dryer but hates to be brushed!
We had to change groomers, she hated large dogs and we were never sure she didn't give our last OES doggie downers. We now take Maggie to someone who has expierence with OES and they love her and she...sorta loves them. It only cost $10.00 more but it's worth it, even though she only stays clean for about 10 minutes before she goes and lays in her favorite dirt hole she dug for herself...kids...I tell ya.
Big Ben can be a handful at the groomer - she has told us how he gets upset when he has matting between his pads or on his ears. When his hair is short they seem to get along fine but the longer the hair the more we hear how he isn't a very good boy. Anyway, we've tried different groomers. The one who did the nicest job didn't bond well with him, every time we picked him up she would complain how he pulled her on the leash and we had better train him before it got out of hand. (He's not great on the leash but he's not bad, either.) I moved to the groomer at our vet's office and she is much more tolerant. We were afraid she would reject his appointments if he was too naughty and actually asked if she would give him a mild sedative - she absolutely refused and said they would "get through" the dematting and he would be fine. I'm glad we've been persistent with the grooming, though. No matter what I do I can't get him to look - or smell as nice - as the groomer. Doggy language is funny, we board, groom and go to the vet at the same place and every single time Big Ben walks in without any issues and a wagging stump. Now, like I've written before, he's not the brightest beast in the world but I'm sure he would be skittish if they were mistreating him. Aside from the actual grooming I will say that he barks non stop which must drive everyone crazy. I can hear him (and only him) in the background when they call to tell me he's ready for pickup. I can't help but to think I am picking up a frantic tone to the groomer's voice.... "please come now, don't wait!" Haha!
Boy do I feel for you and am tempted to send you one of those bumper stickers that say "The more people I meet the more I love my dog."
Or "Love me - Love my dog." Okay enough lame humor but I really sympathize with you and find myself angry at this woman for making you feel bad over Walter. While he may be a handfull - she's into this business and has to take the good with the bad- just like kids - dogs have all sorts of personalities and not all are charming and beautifully behaved. She had no right to make you feel badly about Walter whom I feel I have come to know reading your post. While he may be a challenge that's what make him Walter.

My advice go find another groomer - you don't need to go where someone makes you feel bad. I've had some good and bad experience with groomers - one made Shaggy jump down off the table once and dislocated her hip. I had previously told them she was very frail and needed to be treated with TLC. They did take responsibility for it as she had a vet visit prior to the groomer where I had proof she was fine before. (That happened 6 years ago) That was my only bad experience and unfortunately left Shaggy with a slight limp.

The suggestion to find someone to come to your home is good. I found an excellent groomer that worked on dogs in her own home. It took about 8 hrs to shave Shaggy in the summer due to her inability to stand for a long period. It meant she got down on the floor with Shaggy inbetween naps. Unfortunately she no longer did it when I was looking for someone again to clip Shaggy.

I saw a documentary on TV about woman in prison whom trained dogs that were considered unadoptable. These woman took these really hard to adopt dogs from the shelter and lived with them for three weeks and trained them in hopes of making them more adoptable. To fund this worthwhile program they groomed dogs to raise money - the cost was really inexpensive - a mere 35 dollars (I have paid as much as 85 for other groomers.

I called around and found a woman's prison that did this - I know it sounds funny! But I have never come across so much satisfaction from this service. I carried Shaggy in...aged, arthritic and spent a lot of time explaining her frail health and that I really needed a lot of TLC when she was getting groomed. They were amazing! The held her up with many hands under her belly when it became apparent she was having trouble standing. They took her for walks, messaged her limbs and let her have naps. They really cared about her. I was a satisfied customer and although some may question taking your dog to a prison I believe their program has merit and benefit dogs.

A funny side note to this story is I was 5 mins late picking her up for the closing time of 4 pm after being stuck in traffic on the bridge. There I was outside the prison trying to get the attention of the security cameras. I joked I'm probably the only woman in history that tried to break into a prison! Joking aside they brought her out to me - guards and prisoners, along with her new doggie friends. It was quite a memorable moment. I'm definately going back there with Merlin some day.

There are people out there that truly care about dogs and I'm sure you and Walter will find the right groomer for you.
Good luck and he sounds like a big sweetheart!
I can't say how many times I have left my Vivi at the vet to be groomed, and while walking to my car in the parking lot, I can hear only her, barking at the top of her lungs! Embarrassing! Nice to know I'm not alone. I also hear the frantic tone in my groomers voice! But I have had problems there so I switched groomers, I go to Petsmart, and she has been going there for quite a while. They know her and they know how to handle her, and they are very good. Shes always excited when I bring her in and the girls fuss over her. So if your groomer has an attitude, get another one, because who knows how they are treating your baby when your not there!
