and like kids you have to be consistant with them. Do you have the time to housebreak it? Do you have other dogs? How old are your kids? Do you have a yard? Can you take it to obedience class?
An OES can be a wonderful addition to a family, but a puppy of any breed takes more time and patience. They need to be brushed weekly at least and bathed once a month. But when they look at you and come and sit by your side it's all worth it. Just like kids. Good luck. |
Yep, I have kids 3+4 yrs, I stay at home all day, I have tons of dog experience but zero OES experience. |
They are wonderful dogs. I've had 3. I'm sure more people will weigh in soon. As long as you know what to expect it should be a wonderful expierence.
Good luck. |
Hi there....
Maggie`s mom is right although you have to take your time and be patient with the pup...it`s really worth it...I`ve had other breeds before but my Pisco just tops them all...he is the quiet type but very demanding of love and attention, but he is a sweety.although I don`t have children of my own I do have a couple of friends with toddlers and they come very often to my house or we go to theirs and Pisco is just wonderfull to the kids....at first it was hard to keep him away from them since he just loves them very much but gradually he has become very protective and seems to know at what distance it is safe to be with them...although I don`t leave him alone with the kids... sometimes they even use him to get up from the floor and he will stand very patiently beside them...once one of the kids fell and Pisco just flew to his side and started liking his face and looking at me to be sure the baby was al right..and didn`t leave his side until Mom came to pick him up... i have a 5 month old boy sheepie, felix - quite a character! i would think 5 months is still young enough to "mold;" goodness knows we're not done training felix yet.
he does have a *ton* of energy, and he's a big puppy (about 50lbs now). a 5 month old sheepie is almost definitely big enough to knock over a small child. he also tends to get over-excited when giving puppy kisses and hugs, and can sometimes accidentally mouth or scratch with his needle-like puppy teeth and nails (thank god the adult teeth are coming in, altho i'll put up with a scratch or two for a sheepie hug). he's also *very* clever - already housebroken, knows sit/down/stay/come/off. all in all, a funny, rambunctious little guy. |
