Unless you're going to show him, cutting the hair around the eyes is purely a personal decision. There have been LOTS of threads here about the pros and cons, but it boils down to what you're comfortable with. For my Drez, I can't live without seeing those eyes, so I cut the hair. Also, when her hair gets too long, she bumps into things, just like we would if our vision was masked.
JMHO, Chris |
I also cut around the eyes both Fergie and Cinde. Also our first one Kassie. Cinde has the most soft eyes I have ever seen and of coure when we had fergie her hazel eyes just melted me. So you have my input. |
I think maybe when they were out there actually herding things the hair might have helped protect them from dirt and stuff, but unless you are going to be showing him or herding him, I think that cutting the hair is perfectly fine. |
Lots of different opionions on this subject!!! The purist will tell you to leave it long and if you plan to grow your sheepie into a show coat that would be the "proper" way. HOWEVER, I have always kept Taskers hair trimmed around his eyes. My personal experience has been that when his eyes are covered he cannot see. One time he ran FULL TILT into the side of a pick up truck, luckily it was parked. |
Whenever we take Barney on walks, my husband and I have bets on how many cars Barney will walk into. Usually it is between 2 and 5.
We took him to a lake on Sunday and he kept running into trees... |
I cut Pandas hair, mostly because I just love looking into her eyes...but she is also a klutz and has run into the sliding door on more than one occassion |
Clyde's hair is long so I just keep it pulled back. He's used to it and doesn't mind it. The one time we did cut it he kept shaking his head like something was missing so we let it grow back! |
I would cut it if he is just a pet, or keep it in a topknot if you want... or he may not like that and want it just left alone like my girl Sky. LOL
You don't usually need to worry about til until at least 5 or 6 months old anyway. |
Just however you like it. If long then top knot with a toweling tie, I also braide the hair on top that way it lasts a long time without falling out. Also a slide clip is good also for long head coats. Depends on if you want a full head of hair or not. If not then trimming around the eyes is fine. |
Thank you so much for the replies! My husband and I are enjoying all this information! We laughed our heads off when we read about the dogs running into things! Thank you so much! |
I have a theory that trimming round their eyes can help calm very excitable dogs down because they can see what's going on around them more easily. |
