one more Question-- indoor doggy potties?

What do you know about these... do they work.. are they worth it?? It is negative 11 here today with a windchill of neg 22.. I do not especially want to go ut in this weather 10 times a day and i imagine a pup would not want to either... They have the wizdog system.. and also a couple that use real gress.. has anyone tried these and if so what do you think???

many people will offer positive responses on these i'm sure, so don't take this this first response as the norm.

I am very hesitant to tell my pup that it's OK to poop and pee inside. I live in NY and get cold winters too, but it's worth it for the consistancy to just bring the dog outside. offer more praise for trips that all...."all business" and your pup will learn how a normal potty trip should go.

in the mean time, get a warm coat, hahaha

(good luck with the pup and congrats on the new addition)
Lol. I know how you feel because I did it all winter last year with Clyde. I'd worry about using any indoor method at this pivotal time because I think in the longrun, it'll thwart your housetraining efforts. Wizdog is good for accidents but I wouldn't use it as an alternative to outside pottying.
I wouldn't do that either... puppies start out making little puddles, but a full grown, or even older pup, will make yellow lakes. LOL
You don't want that inside your home.
If a pup thinks it's ok once it will not understand the difference later.
Hmmm.. that's what I thought... So it will not be impossible to convince a puppy to go out in these temps??
No not at all... the pup won't realize it gets any warmer out there til summer....lol....
Dancer is a winter baby, and the problem I had with housetraining her didn't start until after the snow melted. Then she wouldn't pee outside because she preferred peeing on snow...lol....
jack does the opposite, he runs around until he finds a good spot where tehre's a hole in the snow. only pees on grass. ....doofus.

You'll probably find that you'll have a harder time getting the pup to go back in! All Clyde wanted to do was eat snow. Getting him even think about potty was a challlenge.
I am starting to get a clearer picture... This is going to be like having 2 toddlers!! LOL
Bailey is WAY happier now that it's cold out than he was in the heat of the summer. I kind of preferred it when he was too hot to do anything but nap LOL!
jack prefers cold to heat, he hides his butt in the shade in the summer (his dark butt gets much hotter in the sun)
Beaureguard was a winter baby too. I froze my tush off last year taking him outside. He really loves the cold weather so, like Jill's Clyde, he wanted to play outside and not do his business. I thought I'd never get that boy trained!

My advise, get a really warm coat, hat, scarf & gloves & keep them by the door. :D

And yes, your OES will be just like having a toddler around! :D
I use the pee pads inside for my maltese, at 5lbs and with a single coat it would be pretty difficult to outside potty him during Upstate NY winters. He transitions from inside to outside (on sunny days) without any difficulty. HOWEVER........ his pees and poos are very very tiny compared to a OES. I cannot imagine using the pads for TASKER 8O, so with Tasker we bundle up and head out!!!

So I'll bet your overly familiar with "I'd rather bite the leash and grab your pant leg than go potty" move. Clyde found that quite popular especially on the coldest days!
Speaking of cold................ we are in the midst of a record cold spell here, temp at my house this morning was -8 degrees!!! I understand Syracuse hit an all tim low for December!!!!
It HAS been cold. It was 14 here this morning and it is still only in the 20s right now...

Absolutely!! I'll bet you can relate to this too - every single pair of winter socks and pants I own has holes in them somewhere from the knee down due to those tiny little razor sharp puppy teeth!  :D

I am actually north of syracuse.. it was -11 when I checked at 8am with a windchill of -22!!!! Who knows what the temp was before the sun came up!!!! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR............
Actually Tammy, I have one pair of pants, one thermal shirt and one old jacket that have the holes. After the first time I didn't want anything else destroyed so I'd actually change every time I took Clyde out-- no matter what time it was!

whimper whimper whimper.......is it spring yet???????????????????
Being from VT and spending my first winter in TN, I can relate to the references of being cold. I don't miss the temps but am beginning to miss the snow. Actually the temps is the primary reason I moved south and east TN looks a lot like VT.

I think the coldest temp here was 16 but most days go back up to the 40's (at least the 30's) but am still waiting for the snow and Daisy's reaction to it.

Will hope you get a long "January thaw" soon.
Hi
I would bundle up and take my puppy outside. If you use an indoor facility he will get a mixed message...where should I go INside or OUTside. A breeder has raised a puppy and done their best (or at least should have) to be on the right track to become a well behaved dog, then it is the responsibility of the new owner to continue on with the training that was started.
It was -18 this morning here and all my dogs, including the puppies have been in and out several time.

I think that depends on what your long term plan is..... I cannot imagine a long term plan for a sheepie that involves continued indoor potty so I agree, why backslide to going inside. But some toy breeds (my maltese for example) transition very nicely from inside to outside depending on the weather. The malts "litterbox" is by the front door and I was concerned about Tasker (the sheepie) thinking it was for him but he has never given it a second glance and when the weather is warm Ty (the malt) prefers to go outside.
When Sherwood was a puppy..... I used newspaper.... but this is how it works... I work and am single and I could not be home the whole time he was a puppy. I left him in the "puppy safed" kitchen and covered the whole floor except his bedding area with newspaper. Each night getting home from work I would clean up the paper messes immediately mop the floor with a cleaner that took all the scent away... . After the first week I would leave a smaller and smaller area for the newspaper. I believe dogs really want to be very clean. When I was home I would take him out as often as I could when very young... but as he grew past six months or so... would stick to a consistant routine... first thing in the morning... as soon as I got home from work or every four hours when I was at home...
It just takes awhile for there bladders to get big enough. He was a very clean dog all his life and routine is a key... his body was trained to go at 7AM and 6PM and 10PM. It worked so well that when he was pretty much at the stage that he could wait untill I got home... but one weekend... he was in the living room and on his own he grabbed a piece of newspaper out of the rack... spread it out on the fllor and piddled on it. What a good dog!

I have learned to keep easy slip on shoes a big fake fur coat, hat and gloves handy in the winter.... The coat is very long and covers up my pyjamas or nasty sweatpants and dirty sweatshirt...lol.. I look very glamorous on the outside... after awhile you look forward to the outside break for a few minutes... it is usually very peaceful and you can bump into the other doggy neighbours and dog talk.

Good luck with your puppy and enjoy every minute .... they are such handfulls... but the time goes buy toooo fast... well that is how you remember it anyways.... :-)

Cheers,
Rachel
I had two yorkies weighting 4 lbs tops and they were trained to go on doggie grass. We built an enclosure and put a pee pad under the grass and yes they both would still go outside when we took them a couple times a day The grass get bleached everyday and pad are washed everyday. I also trained my two pekes the same way. If for some reason I am running late from work I do not have to worry that they went on the carpet. SInce I do not have a fenced in yard, and the winter here a cold and spring a rainy this was the best solution for us. Now I would not recommend this if the dogs a large but for the small guys it is great
