water bottles to prevent wetbeard

i'm considering allowing jack's hair to grow out. we usually keep it pretty moderate (see photo gallery if you aren't sure what i mean) but i'm thinking of letting him take full advantage of his coat in this inevitably cold winter. my only issue is this:

If i'm going to grow out his coat, i'd prefer not to cut his beard and have him look doofy BUT i have wall to wall carpets and he will totally ruin them if he drools on every surface.

do water bottles (like rabbits and ferrets use) lessen the wetness of a sheepdog's chin? anyone use one that can give me a testimonial?

Ed, when Panda was a puppy we used one of those water bottles...but it was hard to keep it filled, she goes through so much water....now we have a spigot outside that when she licks it, the water comes out..and inside, well, just keep fiiling the water bowl...I think the secret is not to let the hair on the chin so long.....
I also have wall to wall carpeting-- that was only a year old when we got Clyde. The drippy beard has never really hurt the carpet but it's the flying water that hits everything when he shakes is the problem. You'll literally get hit from 20 feet away and I have to wipe the tv screen constantly! Our laptops look like dogs, rather than humans, own them. It sounds annoying, but the best solution is just to keep hand towels everywhere and nip the shake off before it happens. Our house is a pretty open floor plan so we can see when he's going for water and be ready for it most of the time.
I have a bowl that cocker spaniel people use, it has a lid on it with a hole in the top, it means they can only get their snout into drink without the whole beard going into the water, keeps the beard dry. :D
For one thing, you can still trim his beard if he is in full coat, even showdogs have their beards trimmed for cleanliness.
As to the water bottle idea, my dogs would eat the bottle, even if they ever did figure out how to drink out of it! LOL

I don't think I've ever seen one, Lisa. Can you post a picture?
Just uploaded a picture of it tammy. This one is plastic but it does come in stainless steel, but I have that one up at the holiday house. They are great, the cocker people use them because of the long ears stops them going into the water. Does the same job for OES as they go to drink the beard sort of spreads across the top of the lid and not into the water. They are spill proof too, unless they decide to play with it  They also stop that big pool of water around an ordinary bowl and also that long water trail they leave after drinking when all the water is dripping off their beards. Got on to this type of bowl years ago, plastic drinking bottles were no good for me as mine thought they were toys and chewed them to pieces.

This is the type of drinking bowl

A handfull of the dog catalogs have these. Common "brand" name is The Watering Hole"

Great for Wheatens, Bouvs, OES and such. But it's not a cure all. Still expect wet pants from a happily refreshed dog.
Duds has a "guinea pig" style water bottle for use with his crate.

I've never seen him use it, but one day a few weeks ago, he'd managed to pull the metal spout OUT from the bottle, and the water had drained all over the floor. So my guess is that he learned eventually. He's not a big water dog, in fact I'm pretty sure he hates getting wet. (won't go potty in the rain) Duds takes very dainty drinks from his water dish. (which is elevated)

So back to the testimonial. I haven't managed to put his guinea pig bottle back together again, but I think it's possible. No crate water in the meantime, though I do have a stainless flat-sided bucket that I could put water in, however I suspect he'd make a TON of noise with it rattling in the crate. I can't have that noise where I live. (I share a house with a weird landlady)

sigh - so for what it's worth... I like the idea of the watering hole dish, myself. It'd also be pretty spill-proof, too.

Thanks for posting the picture Lisa. :D I've never seen them. It sounds like a good idea, though. I'll have to look for one & try it out. :)

I do use the water bottle in their crates. It's great for not getting their beards wet and they get plenty of water. Of course, they still have regular stainless steal bowls in the house, too. So, we still have wet beards. :?
Lol. I expect to see that bowl worn around the nose! I can see Clyde thinking it amusing to pick it up!
