As my wife Joan and I pause to enjoy a summer vacation day, perhaps to watch fireworks or other Patriotic displays, we also pause and consider the meaning of the day. Freedom. Liberty. Pursuit of Happiness. Freedom to achieve according to one's abilities. Freedom to get lucky and achieve beyond one's abilities. Freedom to fail. Freedom to fail, pick yourself up and try again. Freedom from a tyrannical government. Freedom to swing my arms wildly to the extent they reach the tip of your nose. Freedom to worship - or not - as you wish. Freedom to complain about your government without fear of reprisals from it. Freedom to compliment your government. Freedom to burn our Flag if you wish to (I would hope you wouldn't want to) -- and the Freedom to disagree with this statement. Freedom to stand on top of the highest mountain, the tallest building, the deepest valley, fill your lungs with air until they nearly burst, then scream THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS THE G R E A T E S T for all the world to hear. That's what we'll be doing on the 4th. Probably while chomping on some nicely char-broiled burgers. |

Anyone have any better plans for THIS Fourth of July? |
Well, Ron, you summed it up pretty well. I think a lot of people forget what 4th of July is all about. In the past we would attend this HUGE picnic on the river with our friend who is the Chief of NYPD, where patriotism would flow as freely as the beer. But this year will be different, we will have our baby sheepie with us for about a week then, and would spend time in our back yard , have a BBQ with some close friends, and appreciae the fact that we live in the good old USA! I originally immigrated from Ukraine, former USSR, and believe me, the freedom and opportunities this country has to offer is like no where else in the world! |
If you had asked me the "better plans" question last year, I would have said yes, as my husband I planned a surprise wedding on that day. We invited over 100 people to a casual BBQ and had the mayor show up at 2pm. Most of the people there were in shock. 4th of July is my favorite holiday and in this little community we have a wonderful celebration with the town decked in red, white & blue. It was great being able to have a weddig on that day (my hubby won't forget the anniversary) plus our beloved passed Newman was our ring barer. This year the BBQ will be quite different with Frank running around.
Enjoy the holiday everyone and yes Ron, our country was born this day and I am thankful every day for what I have because of that. |
