Chauncy

Chauncy is a year and half and his best friend is Charley, a Jack Russell. He dominates Charlie whens he wants to, otherwise they play well together. We separate when feeding as Chauncy wll not let Charlie eat. They play very hard together and get really dirty. The issue we have is with the matting of hair. It can get real bad around the jowls (mouth / nose), paws, legs and ears. I trim it off and I want to know if there is another way as I want his hair to stay long? We are new at this and have read up on it, but would appreciate some tips.
by the way, the Jack Russell thinks he's bigger than Chauncy. It's hilarious to watch them play.
Thanks

Other than just keeping up with it, there's really no way to prevent matting. You could try putting conditioner in that area to keep it softer and easier to manage but you don't want it in his mouth either. I use a flea comb to get the dirt off of my dog's beard but I still brush it everyday just for maintenance too-- a couple of swipes with a pin brush on either side of the face will really go a long way! Now, stained beards are a whole different story! Clyde may be dirt free but it's hard to believe with that brown beard!
Ah, welcome to the world of sheepie grooming! Jill's right - there is no shortcut. You just have to keep at it or it definitely will mat. Even if there was no other dog or play in the picture, just having the long coat it would mat fairly easily. Good luck!

If you do a search through the grooming section there are many posts on how to properly groom an OES. It really does take sticking to a strict routine, and a lot of work. I miss one week and my dog is a mess.....
Line brushing is extremely important, since if you are not brushing to the skin, you are not doing much good at all since the undercoat is usually what gets matted.
Use a good spray on, leave on conditioner where he is getting matted on the face and ears & comb through, do that a few times a week, it's hard to stop those matts if he is playing and scruffing around with his mate the jack russell that does create more knots mouthing each other in play.
Chauncy, also at the age, might be experiencing a coat change too and that creates matts big time when they go through that stage, so keep the coat well oiled it does help when they are coat changing.
All excellent advise! I just wanted to say I love the name Chauncy for a sheepie!! :D
I have the same problem. My Benjamin is a boy through and through. He loves to get dirty and tangled. I have no tips for you as I struggle with the same matter, however, you do have my sympathy!

Good Luck and Thanks for asking the question that I have been wondering too!
I got this Pumpkin / Nutmeg conditioning spray for Chumley and Maggie:

Extravagent but a little goes a long way. They smell delicious and are so very soft. Mmmm.
As a "big dog little dog" owner I can sympathize!! Tasker the OES & Ty the maltese play long and hard without concern for the fact that there is a 90+ lb difference in size. Ty goes straight for the hair on Taskers face everytime. As soon as it starts to get long I have the same problem. My solution has been to keep it trimmed (no help to you I know!!!). The only other help I can offer is daily grooming with a detangling spray. Boys will be boys!!!
