Hello and welcome to the forum!
This is a great first stop in learning about OES! Your second stop is Tarja Peters. She is a member here at the forum and is the chairperson of the Breeder Referral program Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA). I am sure she will be happy to assist you!! Through email here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/profile.php?mode=email&u=498 Or through a Private Message (PM) here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=498 |

Thanks Tarja!
I actually contacted you at OESCA, prior to this. I received your detailed list and I'm currently contacting breeders. I am researching and trying to cover all basis, so my post here reflects that. I am having problems with the email contact for your California referral, but 'll try the phone number today. What are your views on shipping a pup from another state? I'm a little uncomfortable with the idea. Thanks again, Mark Thanks Ron as well.[/i] |

I have three OES which two of them were shipped to me from Washington (the state) to Nebraska, they even had a change of planes in Utah. Both of them were fine, besided they had both urinated in their crates. Puffer was three months old when she came home and Butterfly was two years old. The breeders who ship their puppies have done lots of research to find the best and most trustworthy air carrier to transport their precious babies. Hope that eases your concerns a bit. |
we jsut purchased a new pup in LA we got there last 1 but it was first
in the litter very cute 14 weeks picking him up saturday we looked at lots even attemped to shim 1 from mo we paid for him then the breeder said they got a virus begins with prodou or somthing but apparently it is deadly so she lost some of her pups mine included luckily she didnt ship it sick that would have been very sad to get a sick puppy so we looked local as possible so we can drive to get him and ew got really lucky .hes just what we planend for originaly .so good luck in finding 1 thay are quite a few out there now but lots have been sold. |
I'm sure there may be a few ethical breeders who sell their pups on puppyfind.com but quite a lot of them are what I would call puppy mills. That is why the folks on the forum always recommend sheepdog club of america site. The breeders listed on that site have to follow a code of ethics to continue the betterment of the breed.
Good luck with your pup. |
Neville,
Did you ever get your puppy? |
these aren't really puppies but if you wanted to do a rescue they are in CA

We did our research...talked to alot of people, read alot of forums [including this one] and purchased our puppy from this breeder... [Sorry, no links to breeders selling on the web]. Wonderful people, the dog was shipped to us and was clean and happy with his own toys and blanket, and he is a very healthy , well adjusted 4 month old boy. Its my first time with this particular breed, ive had german shepards, labs, and a Beardie, so it takes alot of patience trying to train a dog that is , well lets just say, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he has had all his shots , and seems very healthy, and is a perfect specimen representing the breed. I cant say enough nice things about this breeder.
Oh yes...we are in southern california as well... |
Why no links to breeders may i ask? I have had a very pleasant experience with this breeder.... |
Well, it's been the policy of the site to prohibit links to breeders selling puppies over the web. I don't think that's a particularly good way of conducting business in this business; it's a main way that commercial (as opposed to hobby) breeders sell their product. I have also restricted to the best of my ability, most if not all breeders from advertising anywhere on this site, in any way.
The second reason is that YOU may have had a good experience and will give rave reviews about a breeder, and the breeder will be happy as a clam at high tide to have their business linked to from oes.org. But the first hint of a negative word that comes along, and I get all sorts of threatening emails about lawsuits. Even though I'd win hands down, I don't feel like dealing with those right now. Would you? If I can't provide a balanced view then I won't provide any view. This isn't a place for commercial breeders to advertise their wares. If you'd like to discuss the issue, we can start a new thread about it and talk back and forth on the pros and cons. You might be able to get me to see it differently. |

YOU dont think that a person who breeds dogs in their backyard as a hobby or a second income in the year 2006 and has a simple website that they created to reach a few more people than what lives in their podunk town, is a particularly good way to conduct buisness????? Hmmmmm....Maybe time to come out of the cave?lol. Is Tarja'a method of doing buisness the only one thats ok to advertise on this site....because everytime someone is looking for a puppy it seems perfectly fine for her and her organization to get "pimped out" as it were. Its your site...your word is the law, I respect that. I find it very very disturbing that someone who uses the web in any way shape or form is looked upon as unethical in this day and age is all. So i guess ..if the original poster would like the name and link of a great breeder that I have had a fantastic personal experience from ..... they can pm me and id be happy to send them the link. |
Well, I may have misled you with the terms "hobby" and "business." Sorry about that. On the other hand, I'm not technically challenged (or in a cave! ), and I realize that eCommerce is the way of the future in lots of areas. Right now, the best way I can determine the intentions of a breeder is by looking at their site(s) and trying to make a determination as to what kind of breeder they are.
It's not a science and I am certainly not infallible. In fact, one particular breeder (who isn't mentioned on this site) had rave reviews from most, and I was allowing links to that site along with fair and honest reviews, almost all of which were positive, including breeding stock from very reputable breeders (who presumably checked out the operation). While the website was very commercial in nature, info came to me that the operation was probably ok. That site sells puppies over the web. It just happens that this owner is the one who was threatening lawsuits. Specifically what you talk about is who I DON'T WANT advertising on this site. What you are talking about is a "backyard breeder", which isn't a complimentary term, I don't think. I want breeders who have signed and adhere to the OESCA Code of Ethics, preferably has championship lines, spends all sorts of money on health testing of the sire and dam, and is breeding for the betterment of the breed as a "hobby" for enjoyment, not someone who is looking to make an income from breeding. Those kinds of breeders generally don't need to do much advertising, as they are usually well connected (after all, they got their own breeding stock from another breeder, who carefully checked them out and agreed to allow them one of their dogs to be used as breeding stock). However, if there is a breeder out there who is doing all of this and wants links to their site which sells puppies over the internet they should contact me, and convince me that this is just a necessary way to advertise their well laid-out breed improvement breeding plan, and I'll be happy to provide a link to their site. The breeder referral chairperson for OESCA receives special consideration here because they maintain the list of people who have signed and supposedly adhere to their Code of Ethics. If some other respected organization has a list of breeders who have a similar Code of Ethics, and a list of breeders who have signed on let me know, and I'll consider adding them to the list of recommended referrers! So in conclusion, I'm not against the mechanics of exchanging monies on the web, or of advertising on the web in general. I'm just looking to promote those who are looking to better the breed, and not to promote those who are in it primarily for the money. I hope this answers your question a little more fully and clearly, and clears up any ambiguities I might have caused. |
Very well said....no, i agree with what you are trying to do...., i just wanted to make a point i guess after the amount of research i did on this breeder and the great experience i had with her...no sweat Ron...thanks.. |
