Cheese stuffed mushrooms/spinach stuffed mushrooms
Mini ravioli with marinara dipping sauce Roasted baby yukon gold with gorgonzola Chicken satay Hoisin baby ribs Mini quiches: veggie, lorraine, etc |
Chicken salad stuffed cherry tomatoes
Puff pastry encased brie wheel with fruit Carpaccio(sp?) |
My family is big on mini meatballs with a dipping sauce, either a red sauce or a sweet barbecue sauce. What about non-shellfish seafood? I like doing smoked salmon on cucumber slices with a little sour cream - very low carb too. I love stuffed mushrooms, I have a really evil recipe for mushrooms stuffed with cheese and garlic...mmmmm. And you can never go wrong with a good Taco Dip, although it's not really an elegant appetizer. |
We do meatballs, mini quiches, stuffed peppers, fondue meats, pumpernickle bread cubed with a spinach dip, cheese and veggie's deep fried with ranch or maranarra sauce for dipping, etc.... |
Okay great ideas everyone....im going to do spinich artichoke dip and crepes wrapped with smoked salmon and a lemon zest sauce....thanks everyone....xo |
Remember, any wrapped in filo or puff pastry is extra special. Plus they can be made ahead and frozen then baked right before serving. OK, peanutbutter in filo isn't such a good idea................ |
Okay, so I know Darcy has already chosen her apps, but here's a good, easy presentation (and is Christmas colored)...
Caprese salad on toothpicks... Take those mini mozzarella rounds (you know, the ones that come in the water and are about the size of a kumquat) and skewer one on a toothpick with a piece of basil, then put a cherry (or grape) tomato and the another piece of basil (or start with the tomato, then the cheese, then another tomato (with basil between the layers). Looks fancy, and yummy! |
The caprese salad is a great idea and I love anything that can be served cold! I'll use that one for my New Year's open house. |
That one sounds yummy! |
Wow! Wish our store carried the little cheese balls.......have never seen then and I'm desperate for some snickety snacks for a luncheon Saturday where I know the food service will be slow. Those would be perfect sitting around on the table for people to nibble between courses.

I've never seen though cheese balls either, but cheese curds would work too. |
They usually come with the fancy cheeses in the fancy cheese/deli section. Of course you could always take a big round of mozarella and cube it and use it just the same way. The mozarella in water, though, is fresh and softer versus the other mozzies (which are aged). Plus, the round shape looks cute with the round tomatoes. |
That's a "Jill" recipe if I've ever heard one. It sounds good and even I can do it! I love fresh mozzerella cheese balls with grape tomatoes. |
Thanks Steph...I may do those too...sprinkle some balsamic over the top..very christmassy... |
Wow I'm getting hungry just reading about all these yummy things
Baileys mom, would love the receipe for those evil stuffed mushrooms, love mushys and love garlic |
Geez - I wish you guys lived closer to St. Louis, so I could be the official taster. |
George, Any time you want to come to AZ, we would love to have to taste-test our food...Sue is a great cook too...hey Sue, when you cookin' for me???? LOL |
Looked again for the mozzarella in jars, but only found blue cheese cubes floating in something. How bad could that be!!
Instead I made some cheese balls from flavored cream cheese spread, shredded mozzarella, extra seasoning and rolled in toasted walnuts. Easy. I'm tired and didn't want to do anything more complicated. |
The mozarella doesn't come in jars, but in tubs (like those plastic deli ones)...maybe that's what you meant anyways, but maybe it was throwing off your search! Do you have a Whole Foods near you? I know they sell them there, and I'm pretty sure Trader Joe's does too... |
Whole Foods yes, but don't get to that part of town often. I suspected that's where I'd find them. Joe's opens next month........same inaccessible part of town. Guess I'll need a road trip!

I'm sad because here in Richmond we don't have a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's and I'm used to living in a city with at least 2 of each! Now I have to drive to Charlottesville for Whole Foods or to Alexandria for TJs...so sad...
Although, it is worth the drive because I purchased our turkey from Whole Foods this year (free range and organic) and it was the best we've had in years... |
