Rotties are known for being stubborn perhaps she just likes to eat HER way, but I am running out of items to give her. Looks like I will have to do the bloodwork after all? Sigi |

I think dogs go through spells sometimes but, three months is too long. I would advise to see the vet. You need to rule out any medical problems before you move on.
Also chocolate can be toxic to dogs. I would stop giving her any. |
I would take her to the vet. She needs to be checked out and ask what the vet recommends feeding her.
If she is getting fussy, you maybe should try mixing a hugh quality kibble with a canned dog food. Canned food usually entices them to eat, and though it sounds as though you would rather feed people food, it is hard to nutrionally balance foods according to a dogs nutritional needs. Kibble might help her gain her strength back while providing a balanced nutrional level. |
Hi,
When my aged dog refused to eat (Shaggy was 15 at the time) the vet said you know...go ahead and feed her anything at this point...but saying that, I agree with Willowsprite..a vet checkup is in order. 12 is very old for a large breed and like our seniors they sort of lose their appetites and any food is better than none. Still...a vet check up is a must..and no chocolate ..as like Willowsprite said too..it is toxic to dogs. Best of luck and keep us informed as to what the vet says. Marianne and the boys |
I have no advice that doesn't echo the above. A 3 month loss of appetite with a 12 lb weight loss is a serious concern. See you VET ASAP and good luck. Many dogs will "go off their feed" for brief periods but not that long unless there is a problem. |
I've got a senior and she too is very picky.........she's always been picky but it's getting rather frustrating. Then I hear her gag once in awhile.....so their bodies just don't handle food the way it once did. Beware too high protein may be putting more stress on the kidneys than should be. Maybe some brown rice balls with meat or fish mixed in?
Right now my girl is eating mackerel......like you, anything that will go down and stay down is great. As oldsters they don't move around as much so some muscle and weight loss is expected. Still, I'd have that checked out......seems a bit much. How's her thyroid? Kidneys? Easy tests. |
Three months is way past picky/fussy/spoiled. Like the others I say get her to a vet and rule out medical problems. Her current diet could be leading her to other serious problems. Chocolate is a huge NO, try carob instead. Good luck. |
