Clyde does the same thing to our 3 year old niece, Lily-- he tries to herd her. It is instinct and it's something that seems like it would have to be reinforced a lot to stop since they want to do it so bad! Did the previous owners have small children? If they didn't, they probably never saw the behavior to correct it. We were surprised to see Clyde immediately start it with Lily but he's never really been one on one with a little kid in his home before. He kept shoving her and we'd say "Clyde, no smash" (that's what we call it when he bumps or pushes). At the end of the night, our niece looked at me (after being shoved, licked and bumped about 50 times)and said to me with the most serious tone, "You know, Clyde smashes way too much." It was a perfect "funny things kids say" moment! |
Thanks for your response. I guess I'm not alone. Does Clyde also do this to other dogs and small kids besides your niece? We were told that Annie's first family had a young autistic child. It sounds like the owners weren't too attentive as my understanding is that the kid used to get out of the backyard and Annie was always found with him..that's sweet. Who knows what actually happened. |
Clyde's young so he's pretty hyped up anyway. He does love to herd dogs at the park too though-- but he only gets nippy with the really submissive ones because they let him. He'll definitely push as far as he can! Other than our niece, he's never really had any experience with kids. We don't have any and most of our friends don't either but I'll bet a bunch of our members with kids could advise |
Panda has been know to nip me, my stepdaughter, brian and our niece. We just say "NO BITE" and walk away...of course it sounds easier than it really is as that she follows you and nudges and bumps you with her head..just be consistant. |
After we rescued Samantha, we also had to "train'" my son's friends to say "NO" and then also (here was the biggie) not to run from her! That was the hardest, and they are still a few who forget. One of the kids in the neighbor hood goes in my son's dresser, changes his shirt for Graham's and then hangs his shirt up. He knows that if you run, Sam goes for the shirt and holes happen. |
