Listless or Sleepy?

Hi friends, You helped me before so here is another question (or maybe two). Bart, nine weeks old, is so listless yesterday and today. He just wants to sleep. Wakes to piddle. Isn't drinking much water. But... we just got him last Sunday and don't know how to judge if this is typical puppy behavior or something to worry about. He did have a few days of adjustment and didn't sleep his first night so possibly catching up on his sleep...? Second question is: is dry puppy chow what he should eat now or should it be softened with warm water into a gruel. He eats about a half cup of dry puppy chow. Thanks to all on this special day!

Hi Aurelie.
It is normal for young puppies to sleep a lot. It depends what you mean by listless. He will nap a lot, but also have periods of activity where he should be awake, alert, and very active. Half a cup a day or per feeding? Some pups do fine with their puppy kibble dry, others need it moistened with water for a little longer. Definitely not a to a gruel at this age. Just slightly softer.
How many times a day are you feeding him? He should be fed at least 3 or 4 times a day for now. A pup that age normally eats between 1/2 cup and one whole cup 3 times a day.
Has he had vaccinations recently? Did you take him to your vet when you brought him home? If he doesn't seem well, I would have him checked by the vet, better safe than sorry.
Good luck, and please let us know :)
Thanks for your response, Willowsprite. This forum is a wonderful resource and people like you who share their knowledge and experience is so appreciated. Last evening after I posted my question and after his vet actually called to check on him (!), Bart perked up and chased the broom! This morning, we put some warm water on his food and - for the first time - he ate with enthusiasm. Almost a half cup at one time. This is more than he has been eating during an entire day. So we will continue to add a little water for now. Maybe his little teeth need softer food or maybe the gravy that forms is appetizing... whatever it works. Thanks again.
Hi Aurelie,

Glad to hear your puppy is picking up energy. I would find a better food than Puppy Chow. Lots of filler in that food. Bart is going to be a big boy and you want nice coat I'm sure as well. Cheap commercial foods make them eat more and produce larger and softer stools because of the waste. I would go to a premium food. Do avoid Science Diet. I like Iams mixed with a little BillJack but other members have other ideas. I'm sure most other premium food would be much better.

Just my thoughts,

I use Iams too, I recently tried Pro Plan Puppy because I had the rescue pups and momma here, but my OES simply do SO much better on Iams.
We're a Nutro family.
Both of my dogs are on ProPlan and do great on it. Clyde started on large breed puppy and is now on adult ProPlan. Lucy's very finicky and she just likes it the best-- both of my dogs have cast iron stomachs so upset tummies are never an issue. I've thought of upgrading because I really would like to feed them the Newman Organic foods (they look great) but it seems silly to switch when they both seem to like and do well on what they're on. Kind of the whole "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing!
