We live in Kansas, and we found a breeder who seemed very good in MO. but on the Oes-list I saw that most puppy mills are here in the midwest, and plenty are in MO., how cna I be SURE this is not the case? Also the breeder has been very good about anwsering all my emails promptly, 4 days ago I sent an e-mail asking for another picture of our puppy *to tide us over for 2 more weeks* and a picture of the dad, I have only seen pic's of the mom. I have not heard back from her yet. I wouldn't be so freaked out,but after reading all the stuff on the List, well I got panicky. is it against rules here to post the webiste, for opinions? thanks everyone, you alla re so helpful. Other than that we are ready, went out shopping and got toys, puppy food, a bed, grooming stuff. I spent a little mroe than I thought I would but I really can't wait, this puppy will be SPOILED They just opened a dogie bakery by my house, and I will deffinetly be tkaing cooper there! |

If you are referring to the NEOES list, I sympathize. Right now they are in a right tizz. They are really congratulating somebody for losing a $300 deposit because the seller/breeder wouldn't let them see or inspect the puppy or its parents before finalizing the sale. And to be honest, I think that the seller was violating several federal intrastate trade laws. A buyer always has the right to inspect.
If you are in the same pickle, I wouldn't panic. It is always better to be able to go and look over the pet you are about to adopt for life, but actually Abbi is the only dog I have ever actually chosen. All of my other pets chose me in their own manner (wandering into my yard, friend needed to get rid of last pup, that sort of thing). And I never regretted owning any of them. The worse dog we have ever had as a family member came from the Humane Society. They lied about everything and the dog was absolutely a mess (she had over 10 health problems, was not house broken or socialized, and hated being kept inside or in a yardand was at least 3 years older than they "estimated"). We still kept her up until the day she disappeared (4 years after adopting her). Don't get too panicky. I suppose you have a deposit or have paid for the pup? Read over your contract and see what assurances you have, or don't have. Best get prepared. Is the dog going to be sent to you. How? Make sure every detail of the transfer is ironed out now. If you paid by credit card and haven't accepted the pup yet, you still have some protections per your credit card company. If someting isn't exactly how you thought it would be, report them to the seller and the credit card company and any other entity involved, including the AKC and your state's Comptroller's office. Let them know nicely, by asking if they know who regulates their breeding program. If it is the FDA, you may have a puppy mill. Just make sure to mention that you are expecting a puppy without any parasites or physical defects. Go over basics. There should be no more than normal amount of eye/nose discharge. You would like them to check and verify the pup's temp before they ship it. When you receive it be sure to do the same. Make a vet's appointment and check it out thoroughly. I amnot sure how much it costs to ship a dog. Last time I shipped abbi from Argentina it was $75 and that was in 2001. Point is $75 is cheaper than $300. Limit your losses, be reasonable in your request and you will probaly do just fine. If the pup is sick or defective make sure you know how an exchange or refund will be made and do it. No need to watch a sick puppy die. For now, just follow your contract through and make sure the seller is holding up his side. That is about all you can do. You can research the sellers. You can research every concievable problem that could occur. Just to be prepared. But in the end, if this is the only way to get a pup and the pup is fine and you will lose money by backing out of the deal, don't feel bad by accepting the pup and enjoying life! Breeders and Rescue have their own agendas. After a while they seem to get a bit too judgemental and forget that judging is something better left to the ALL POWERFUL, and we aren't HIM. Hang in there. Bet you get one beautiful OES. Haven't seen one that wasn't adorable. If it is coming from a puppy mill, get ready to socialize the poor lost soul. Play with his food. Make him sit to be fed. Give him his own kennel to go to for comfort. Pet him and roll balls and toys to him. If you leave him alone all day, make sure to stay with him most of the time you are home. Take him on short walks at first, even if you have to carry him. Act like he is a newborn, not a dog, and he will be your loyal friend. Just remember he is a dog! And he needs a pack leader, not lots of cooing. Teach him sit, and paw these next few weeks. Interact without being coy. You must be the fair, trustworthy leader who protects the pup from abuse, but doesn't allow pup to abuse. He will be teething, with sharp little teeth. Puppies teeth on their siblings. But you will not want him to do that. Every time he goes to chew on you, stick his chew toy in his mouth. Substitute, divert, and train the easy way. Figure out what he can and will do, put a command to it, and reward him. On the list they would give you different advice and a lot of it is VERY helpful. When it comes to training, grooming, and health you cannot do better than the OES list. But you don't have to be a martry unles you want to be. Take responsibility for your obligations and insist as much as possible that others do the same. After all, this is a business transaction whether you want it to be one or not. treat it that way and you will be able to live with whatever comes next. Feel free to vent here. We all have vented from time to time. Life can be trying and we all make mistakes from time to time. Just make the best of any you make and keep the faith. |
that is ME on the list hahahah
okay I cna't post anymore today..your only aloud 7 posts per day. the sccoop is the breeder freaked out and told me that she does not wnat to sell me the puppy now,and that by asking her to show me the certifications on the parents,I am "untrusting" and waisting her time. the ENTIRE situation is pretty awful. I am feeling really crummy tonight and am ready to climb in bed watch the dog show and be a little sad =( I'll get it worked out though. thanks! |
Hi, Sleepymom -
I'm curious - where are you getting your puppy? We also live in Kansas and I got mine from the daughter of a friend. We feel that we actually rescued our OES since he was underweight and had some health problems when we got him. Our "free" puppy cost us several hundred dollars in vet bills the first few months. I'm happy to report that he is now in fine health. He's a big, lovable goofy ball of fur. He turns 1 on February 2. |
i am a regular poster here but want to remain anonymous for this post. when the breeder told you that they don't want to sell the puppy to you anymore, you should have said "great. i accept your offer to cancel the contract and i expect my money back." did you pay by credit card? your card company might assist in gettting your money back when you tell them that "the seller offered to cancel the contract and i immediately accepted but now they wont retun my money" hope things work out for you |
I paid by credit card! thank you I will do that. I ahd not ey responded to her.
her name is Darlene brennan. I am terribley saddened by it. it's on 6 am so in a few hours hubby will call the bank. thank you everyone |
Sleepymom,
I have followed your story on the OES list and I believe you are doing the right thing. I know how hard it is for you now, how dissapointed you are, but in the long run you are doing the right thing. My puppy girl is now 2 years old and when I was looking for a puppy I was obsessed with finding one. I contacted Janet Loeher to get a referral from a reputable breeder, but when no puppes were available, I started looking at websites. I found one breeder, left a deposit, waited weeks, only to find out the dog was never pregnant. She did return my deposit and was very nice about it, but I was glad in the end it didn't work out. I found another breeder I thought was reputable and did get my puppy. Only after getting her did I join this forum and the OES list and boy did I get an education! I am almost ashamed to say how I found my dog because I know now that the "breeder" is not reputable and I regret that I am someone who helped keep her in business. I have been lucky so far, Phoebe is a teriffic dog, but I always wonder what will happen longterm. I will never again be so impatient in finding a dog. Although your heart is broken now, you haven't yet had the dog home and that makes it easier for you and your kids. A breeder who tell you that asking to see certificates is mistrusting her is not a reputable breeder and you are right to end the deal. Although waiting is harder, find a breeder you know you can trust, and in the end, you and your children are the winners. Good Luck, I know it will be worth the wait! Ann & Phoebe |
ann,
thanks for your support. I am hoping I found a pup, by a very reputable breeder. I am exctied, and HOPE it works out,but I have heard it may be difficult to get a dog from this breeder, so I'm hoping. I am really impatient, but being here and seing pictures and hearing all the great stories, helps me relax and realize good things come to those who wait. so for now am waiting. wish me Luck please! p.s. we contacted the bank, I told them that she cancelled the contract, which stated "non-refundable deposit" which she did. I asked for the CERF and OFA certificates and she said she was far to busy to look for them, and that I was so untrusting she thought it best for me to find someone else to get a pup from. so the bank is investigatying it or whatever. I am not contacting her any further, and hope it ends here.... thanks again |
Hi guys....I`ve been here reading your posts and I don`t know what to say!!!!....At least you guys in the States have a way to protect yourselves and the dogs....unfortunatly here in Peru...well all south america, we don`t have any of those organisms....you just have to be lucky when you choose a dog mostly from pet shops or informal breeders...fortunatly for me Pisco turn out to be a great dog with no mayor health problems so far....the good side is that Vet bills are not that expensive ...mine only charges me if he has to medicate Pisco, but for analisis and check-ups those are free....but then again we don`t have that much of Vet hospitals just small clinics....I am also on the OES list and although I don`t post very much I do take the time and read them.
Keep up the good work....I sleep better knowing that somewhere in the world dogs are treated with respect and love. Vero and Pisco. |
UPDATE:
I am getting a 13 month old pup on valentine weekend. He comes from Doug and May-Anne johnson. I am ver yvery excited. Doug is an AKC judge and a very reputable breeder. It'll be a LONG drive ou there to pick him up on valentines weekend. we are all very exctied |
Where and what is the oes list that you are all referring to? |
The OES-List is an email-based discussion group similar to this forum, the most major difference is that all of OES-L's communications are done through email.
Here is where you can read about joining OES-L: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=319#319 Here is where you can read about some of the differences between the two formats: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?p=921 The first link is a little bit old -- we now have about 1/2 of the number of members that OES-L has; and probably about 1/3 or 1/2 of the number of posts/emails on any given day. However, certain things are currently better discussed there than here, and vice versa. Some things (such as this thread) are being discussed in both places. Hope this helps! |
I had to quit that list, while most info was good I kept getting all these emails on things I wasn't interested in, such as using OES hair to make purses and things, way too over the top for me. I love my Sheepy but her hair is her own and what comes off when I comb her goes in the trash just like mine |
