A dubious "honor"

Of the top ten cities for murders per year Detroit is #2 and Flint is #4 :(
Detroit is also the fattest city :( And they probably have the worst roads in the country.....

Geeeezzzz!!! You're right - that's not a list you want to be on top of, is it? 8O
Well, my city, Richmond, is #5...
They've made a big deal out of it here, with the mayor saying just wait until next year, these are actually last year's stats (the mayor was just elected this past year) and he says there'll be a huge improvement...and the next story was about all the shootings and the double murder over the weekend...in the fun downtown going-out area  yeah, big improvement...
Houston, where Mr. Joah is from, had honors the other year for being fattest and "most odor."
Everybody's got to be the 'best' at something! :rimshot:
   you are
Most odor? That's funny (not if you live there...)

I know Chino, CA is pretty smelly (they have massive cow farms)

and gilbert, CA is supposed to smell like garlic, so I can't imagine what Houston smells like!
You know, you'd think Hershey would smell good with all the chocolate but it atually smells pretty funky.
I've been to Gilroy, CA, the world capital for garlic lovers.

At some points during the year, just driving the car down the highway is quite aromatic, and other times, you just can't tell you're in Gilroy.

We never did stop at GarlicWorld. :(
My sister lives in Hershey, PA - she works for Hershey, too. Her apartment is across the street from the factory where they make the peanut butter cups. :-D

How I'd love to move out there with her! (need a job and a few things in order first)

The air ALWAYS smells like chocolate, and it gets gross at times because it's not always the finished product that you're smelling.
Are the streetlights still shaped like Hershey kisses?
Yupper and there are no overhead wires or lines.

Don't worry about a job, they're always hiring at the factory. They make good money too, just for working on the lines. And you're right, it's when you get that big whiff of the not finished product that it smells gross. I always like driving past the bread factory better.
We are the best! We are the best!

I'd start worrying more if we fell out of the top 5. It's sad though because there aren't going to be any positive changes until there's a new mayor in office and we're stuck with Kwame for the next 4 years. Since everyone who works in Detroit pays Detroit city taxes even though they don't necessarily live in the city, many people at the universities (the largest employers downtown) are trying to get it put on the ballot that anyone who pays city taxes should be able to vote in Detroit as well. That would change the way the voting sways a lot.

It kills me how with all the poverty in Detroit, they still manage to get fat. Guess no one's really going too hungry.

'They' (I don't know who 'they' are) say it is because the poor can't afford good for you nutritiuos food so they live off of fast food and cheaper (fattier) cuts of meat and fewer vegetables...

I think that is a great idea to have anyone who pays Detroit taxes be able to vote in Detroit, whether you live there or not. I mean, if you are there 8-9 hours a day for work, you practically live there...

I've heard that argument before, too. I can see that making sense to an extent but I think for the most part, that a lot of people below the povery level either don't have the education to know what's better for them or it's that they don't want the "better for you" foods. I can also see it accounting for some people being overweight but, and I haven't seen the recent numbers from the study, there are a huge amount of people in the city that are staggeringly obese. Generally speaking, you just can't get that fat by making only bad choices, it's by consuming mass quantities!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into a poor vs. obesity thing. I'm not trying to start a big debate here.
I always feel nervous driving in Detroit. If you go the wrong way off the Ambassador bridge after dark it's enough to make you cry. LOL
I did.

Where I used to live, Leamington, was of course the tomato Capitol, and some days with the Heinze factory it smells good, but other day, yuck. I hate vinegar days.
Where I live now is known for the vast numbers of lakes, EVERYWHERE. It takes forever to go anywhere, even in town, because of the lakes and rivers. We have an extremely low crime rate here, at least for violent crime. For 50 years there was only one murder that anyone could remember. In the last 3 or 4 years though there have been 3 or 4 attempted murders and one murder. I believe it is due to the "megajail" the town built, to house the long term prisoners from the bigger cities all over Canada. The prisoners are here now, so their families follow them and are housed here, on welfare and most don't come from exactly the best backgrounds. It has seriously made me consider moving, but we'll see how it goes.
When people ask where I'm from I never even say the Detroit area, it has such a bad connotation. I'm a born and bred eastsider(Darcy knows what that means) which is someone well east of Detroit. Jill(and maybe Jil) would be considered westsiders. The movie 8 Mile is true, the dividing line IS 8 Mile Rd, always has been. If you live in the UP you're a UPer(hard u), northern Michiganders are trolls because they live under the bridge. We have lots of names for downstaters...flatlanders, fudgies, trunk slammers
Its funny, because I have been away from Mi for YEARS, and I still say that I am from Mi. They ask where and I say outside of Detroit..they ask where outside of Detroit..so I say Grosse Pte...and then they say..Oh you must be rich....lol...maybe my parents did do well, but they worked really hard. My question is...Just because you grew up in one area, why do people assume that you are A. Snotty or B. As well off as your parents?? I sort of compare myself to the Gilmore girls...(my parents were NOT that well off) but the point is that the parents live in a different world than the kids. I am proud to say that Im from Michigan and like everyone else said..."I guess you have to be good at something"..the only thing that Phx has is heat.....there isnt even an Olga's kitchen, Greek town, or an apple orchard............
Detroit's downtown area is really starting to develop despite the poor mayoralship! It's true, the reputation is what keeps most people away from the city but it definitely isn't the downtown that you have to worry about, it's the urban sprawl. The downtown is literally at the epicenter of all the poverty. Once you get through the ghetto, you're in the suburbs and you'd never have any idea that you had passed through the area that you did literally a few miles before. Like Holly said, once you cross 8 mile (going east) it's 100% different. Within a couple of miles of that border you're back into the $1 million + homes again. Actually the same goes the other way into Grosse Pointe too only their dividing line is Alter (right, Darcy?).

People do automatically assume you're super rich when they hear Grosse Pointe but it all depends which Grosse Pointe you're in-- everyone assumes you're on Lakeshore! I grew up way on the east side and I like the the west side a lot better. I like my neighborhood and I love the location. I'm only about 10-15 minutes from anywhere I ever need or want to go, plus, less than a mile away from the dog park!
Yes Jill youre right...My brother lives in clinton twnshp and LOVES it there...my sister used to live in Sterling hts till they moved out of state. Those are great areas...again, I had a fantastic childhood, wouldnt change a thing, but the west side has grown and developed into some beautiful areas....and no we didnt live on Lakeshore either...bummer.
