Jamming head between legs

When Chummie and I are out walking, people often want to stop and pet her -- which is nice. But Chummie has a rather disconcerting habit of suddenly ramming her face between their legs. 8O I am always on the watch and try to hold her back but she is quick. . . That's bad enough. Sometimes she combines it with a quick upward movement of her nose and, well, you can imagine how startled some of the shorter people are. . . So embarassing! Does anyone else's dog do this? Any suggestions for handling it?

Barney kind of does that too. He'll just walk up to me and ram his nose into my crotch and then kind of just push, so it's not like he's sniffing or anything. I basically just try and dodge him, so I don't have any advice for you, sorry!
Exactly! She is not sniffing. Sometimes she seems to just want to keep her head there. Sometimes, she pushes through to promote back scratching. And sometimes she does the quick and forceful bump-up. One woman gasped "well, *that* woke me up!" It is terribly rude.
My dog Izzie does that too. My last two sheepies also did it. They also liked to walk between our legs. I think it is just a dog thing. They like to be close to people and check them out.

I think Izzie also likes to make sure I can't go anywhere without her...so she sets me up to fall if I make any sudden movements. :D

Annie does this too, so I don't have any suggestions. Sorry! Hopefully, the people don't mind. We have one neighbor who Annie ALWAYS sticks her nose in his butt. It's quite embarrassing as well, but that's the nature of the beast!
I don't think I've ever had a dog that didn't do it, although both of mine are partial to doing it to me rather than strangers. Clyde reserves his conformation stack for strangers so they can pet him easily!
 Oh yeah... Darby thinks human legs are weave sticks. She goes between our legs. Then she stops half way through and wants her butt scratched. I've told my husband that we should stop the behavior before someone falls on her but it's usually more difficult to train the uprights. I would think that a firm "leave-it!" or "uh-uh!" and a distraction to a proper behavior might work with treats as a bribe. A quick turn would stop it but what kind of warning would you give an unsuspecting stranger??
We go the other direction. He shoves his butt into people so they will scratch it!

Actually, that happens after he tries to knock them over.

Ha! That's what Maggie does! My parents HATE it...(it gets worse when my husband comes over and scratches her butt forever...and then leaves, leaving my poor parents to deal with a backing up pup). Sometimes we wished that she made that beep beep beep noise trucks make when they back up!
Panda does this too. However, she really only does it to me. If we are on a walk or at the dog park, if she is feeling insecure, she will just stand between my legs...if my legs are together, she will nudge them open and just stand there...I think she thinks it her saftey zone...
Mojo does the same thing.
I was in my long bath robe the other morning when he tried. Of course he couldn't get through and almost took me over.
With our previous sheepie Ronnie thought it was cute that he taught him to do it one command. If one of my girl friends would come over, he would tell him to "check it out". Oh the things men do for fun!!
My best crotch hound is Fox. Being tall, his pushing can be rather surprising or thrilling depending on.........well, never mind.

But it doesn't stop with people standing, he waits until they sit down and dives right in again. We blamed it on his bad eyes. He must have had an eye injury before he came as one was always weepy. Vet said apply drops 3x a day....yeah right. So now the eye is blind and the other gets rather goopy.......allergies?. I thought the rubbing was to rub his eyes. Now it is just to get his neck and should rubbed.

Actually Panda has done this to me and I've seen her do it to Elissa too. It must be a complement from Panda - to let us stand in for you, Darcy! Bailey is so big now that he couldn't possibly stand between my legs. But he does bump people with his butt in the hopes of getting a nice butt rub.
Sue and Elissa, Obviously Panda loves her aunts!!! I forgot about the picture, Sue, with Panda between your legs.... Panda cant wait for the play date with Bailey on Monday...she misses him...and Im sure he'll think she is the "cats meow" with her long hair now....lol
Bam-Bam does the exact same thing, but only when we are playing with his basketball. He rams the basketball from behind between my legs or my husbands legs and just stops us on the spot. I think it is his way of controlling the situation and making it known he is still in the basketball play mode. These sheepies certainly do have their own ways. Another thing he does only with me is take me by the hand with a gentle mouth of course, and lead me around, usually to his floor pillow where he barks loudly as if to order me to play with the toys in his basket. We are definitely owned by this sheepie, never a dull moment!

Tasker's favorite spot has always been standing between my legs......laying between my legs....... rollings between my legs....... good thing I have long legs!!!!!
:D :D :D
