My City/ Your City

Drezzie's mom recently posted about her adventures aboard the cruise ship ..sigh the photos are awesome!

Anyhow, got me to thinking about the city which I live in, and since many of us have included ourselves on the frappr map which shows which part of the world we live. I thought I'd include a site which shows my city and I'd love to see pics of your city as well.

Here's Vancouver and just goes to show you although I live in the burbs outside of it..it really isn't in the middle of nowhere..but surrounded by nature nonetheless. If you scroll down at the site I've listed below and just view the pics it gives you an idea of what my city and it's surrounding area looks like.

Marianne, Wow, Vancouver is beautiful!!! Its funny how you just never picture other cities...it is glorious....hmmm, maybe I would come out even if you dont have plumbing........
Lol Darcy!!! :D :D :D

Hey would love to see photos of your city too..or town..villages..ect..

Marianne
I live in an old river town in MN called Hastings. Our city's webpage is pretty uninspiring, but the architecture isn't! I (tried to anyhow) linked to a search from the Minnesota Historical Society showing some old pics of all the gorgeous buildings in our city (sure hope it works!) almost all of which still stand today:

For anyone who is curious, we are considered to be a suburb of the state capitol, St. Paul, MN. Here is a link to some of the places around St. Paul (my personal faves are the capitol building and the cathedral!)

Karen :)

Vancouver is just lovely- it'd be a blast to go visit it someday!
Fun thread!!!

I hope this works!!Im off too check outt he other cities!!
I think this is a great idea for a thread too!

I live in the City of Kawartha Lakes, which is Ojibwe for "Land of Shining Waters" (meaning of Kawartha)

What a great Idea,

Here's Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Wow Karen, Tanya and Stacey,

You live in beautiful places too!

Karen, I love old photos and poured many shown on the first site you listed. Had a bit of a chuckle at the pre 1920's pics where no one smiles and the ladies always had their hands folded on their laps if seated.
The State Capitol is a beautiful building and like your Harriet Park, we have Stanley Park in the heart of the city.

Tanya, I love those historical looking storefronts in your city. I especially love old Victorian houses. I only saw the first pic on the site as when I clicked on the others only the title page came up.

Willowsprite, Your city does describe the Land of The Shining Waters. The views are breathtaking and looks like a great place to live.

What a great idea.

Here is Greenfield Indiana

http://www.greenfieldin.org/
sniff, my lack of computer skills is coming into play again...can anyone link Phoenix for me??? Especially the downtown area......
Here you go Darcy:

Phoenix, Arizona your home.

http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/DISCOVER/index.html
Town Of Milton- 20 minutes from Pearson International Airport, 40 minutes from downtown Toronto, and 1 1/2 hours from Niagara Falls.

Milton is a small, rural town that is rapidly growing. It is home to Chris Hadfield (Canadian astronaut) and the Kung Fu Club where my teen son trains with Elvis Stojko (ex-skating champion).

http://www.miltonweb.com/tourist.htm

The town website looked kind of boring, but this one shows the touristy stuff...
Thanks Marianne!!! If you click on historic preservations...the house in the upper left corner...Yellow with an E on the fireplace chimney, is a house in my neighborhood....how cool!!!! See Arizona can be green....
You know that Joan and I visited the town of Milton, Ontario on one of our trips. We stopped at the town hall, and took a picture in front of the sign.

I was born and raised in Milton, Massachusetts. :D
http://www.townofmilton.org/

I remember the town hall, and there was a bell on display on the lawn/greens of the town hall.

Too bad I didn't know you then! We would have stopped for a spot of tea.

Of course, now I live in Southborough, Massachusetts:
http://www.southboroughtown.com/

This town has undergone rapid growth lately... from about 6,500 residents when I moved in, in 1994 to about 10,000 today. Since we have been a town with fixed boundaries for 275+ years, and since we have 1 acre minimum zoning, land is getting mighty scarce. Pricey, too.

Here are some modern day photos; Please note that some of our residents are still living in the 1700's. Also notice that there was an attack by giants, fended off with muskets aimed high.
http://www.southboroughhistory.org/Robe ... arking.htm

Our town's history was written in a book entitled "Fences of Stone" by Richard E Noble. The reason there are so many stone walls around is because the town has nothing but stone in the ground. Installing a fence requiring digging in Southborough is not recommended.
Here's Columbus:

http://www.columbus-ms.org/

I actually live in Caledonia, which is about 15 mins north of Columbus. It's one of those towns that's barely on the map, and if you blink, you'll miss it. There's not any red lights in the town and everything is on one street, lol I LOVE it there though, and it would be difficult for me to move away. :)

Ron! That is so cool! I am out in the coutnry, just south of the town. I've been here 4 years, so was it in that time? We've done camping and RV'ing all over southern Ontario. If you stayed on a site in the area I may know it.
I'm not sure when it was, but believe it was in 2000 or before. Joan is fairly certain it was with our previous dog, and I have no digital photos, but remember taking pictures, so it has to be before November 2000 when I got the digital camera.

Stream of consciousness follows:
Wow, this camera is getting long in the tooth! Boy was it expensive when I got it.... 3.1 Megapixels, $800. In the scheme of things, camera pixel count hasn't doubled every 2 years like other chip densities, otherwise you could get a 12.4MP camera for $800.
Well technically I live in Cathedral City... Their website is BORING. But here is some info on the town http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathedral_ ... California
We are only 4 blocks from the border of Palm Springs, so I am posting their site. http://www.ci.palm-springs.ca.us/ The first picture on the top of the page shows a golf course. We are down the street from there to the right...with almost the same view of the mountains...but better 8) We are a bit closer.
Elissa
Our city website isn't that great, either, but here it is...

http://www.richmondgov.com/visitor/about.aspx

I live west and north about 13 miles from the city, so I am in the suburbs. Richmond has really tried to improve itself and its image in the last few years and it is doing a pretty good job, but it still has a long way to go (like how it is one of the murder capitals of the US!)...I know, painting such a lovely picture of my town.
Thanks Marianne, nice thread. Enjoying reading about everyone's
area.

Here's ours, Southeastern Massachusetts

Great location, half way between Boston and Cape Cod !

Boy the websites about Harrisburg are dull! Somebody should do something like the ones you guys have because it's more exciting around here than these sites make it seem.
Anyway, here you go...
http://www.visithhc.com/capcity.shtml
and the main site: http://www.visithhc.com/
And since they lump Harrisburg and Hershey together and we spend almost all of our non-downtown time in Hershey, I'm stealing Shellie's posting ability in this thread and putting up this one too.
http://www.hersheypa.com/
It's mainly the Hershey Corporation stuff but everybody loves chocolate!!!
Hi,

I looked at each and every site that you guys posted...I found it really interesting about the places where you live. Makes me want to travel!!

No matter how large or small each place was, it had something to offer a visitor...love the architecture of many of the old buildings. Gave more perspective where sheepies all across the world and their uprights live.

Lisa, Melbourne is beautiful! Aus has always been on my wish list of places to visit one day. Thanks for posting everyone.

Marianne
Thanks, marianne, I hope one day that you do get your wish and come downunder and see our country and our unusual native animals.

My husband & I have had a wish, to see Canada, been wanting to do that for a long time, so maybe wishes will come true for both of us. :D
I'm posting a few areas near us. Our mailing address is Northampton, PA, but we are in a rural township and just use Northampton as our post office. So we go from very small (our township) to a bit bigger (Northampton, population about 9500), to the nearest big cities of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton in PA.

http://www.allentownpa.org/
Allentown is trying to revitalize itself. Lots of historic homes, a beautiful art museum, and an old church that was once used to hide the Liberty Bell way back when.

http://www.bethlehem-pa.gov/
Bethlehem's nickname is the "Christmas City." Lots of historic buildings and the home of Lehigh University.

http://www.easton-pa.com/
Easton is where I was born and raised. Home to Lafayette College.

Probably the best part about living where we do (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton and surroundings is known as the Lehigh Valley, because the Lehigh River runs through them all), is that we are about midway between Philly (and surroundings, also known as the Delware Valley, because the Delaware River runs through them) and NYC. So we can get the benefits of the big cities within a 60-90 minute drive, but can come back home to the "boonies." So, may I also present:

http://www.phila.gov/

And. . .

Wow! Hope I didn't overwhelm anyone! 8O

Chris
Wow! This is so cool! Great idea Marianne, I love looking at everyone's hometowns!

Karen :)
This has been fun! Good idea Marianne. I've really enjoyed "virtually" visiting your hometowns and surrounding areas! All beautiful! :D

Here's my hometown page. http://www.hickorymetro.com/default.asp
My 2 cents!

How fun! I haven't had much time to check out all of your sites but will do so very soon.

My town's website is very uneventful. We live close to the city of Chicago where there are a tons of things to so and see. We don't venture there often as the traffic is horrible any time of the day or night. We go there to visit my Dad and a few friends.

Okay - now I have a question. Can anyone tell me what constitutes a "village"? I heard this term in reference to what I would've considered a small town when I was driving through the northeast not long ago.

I just noticed on Stacy's town website that it is a village, too.

So...what's the difference, or is there one, between a town and a village? Is it just terminology?

Just curious! :D
Hi, Tammy. I think it's just the terminology. Town, village, suburb...
Good question! I used to live in "Milton Village" which was part of the Town of Milton, but I never really thought about it. Our zip code was 02187 which I guess is technically, "Milton Village, MA" while the rest of Milton was 02186.

I also know of other places referred to as a village, and they are subsections of towns, kinda like a neighborhood, but bigger than that... a whole section. There might be two of three villages in a town, sometimes none, sometimes one section is a village, and everything else isn't. LOL

The village IS part of the town...

When Joan and I (briefly) lived in Newton, MA... there are something like 13 villages in Newton.

Aha! A great resource:
http://www.newtoncitizens.com/villages.shtml

Quote:
In some ways, villages in the city of Newton are a state of mind; there are no formal borders, but everyone knows in which village they live. Some village names are official Post Office town designations (although the Post Office labels as Newton Center that which is properly written Newton Centre thank you very much). One village, Chestnut Hill, actually shares its name with a neighboring area in the Town of Brookline, although nobody local seems to have the slightest difficulty telling where Newton ends and Brookline begins.
Howdy from Gilbert, AZ! Although it's only 30 minutes to downtown Phoenix, Gilbert is a small town with a real pioneer history. Right now we're in the middle of our annual Gilbert Days celebration which includes a Pony Express reenactment, a big deal Rodeo (official qualifier for the Nationals), a parade with the Rodeo Queen and her court, and lots of other festivities.

Thanks, Ron! Very helpful! We have areas like that here, but they're not referred to as villages. I like that word, though, it calls to mind a quaint, Norman Rockwell scene. :D

Very cool history of your town, Sue. I like the old pictures and the way the traditions are still being carried out. The "old west" ways make for interesting reading!

Northern Michigan is beautiful, Holly!
This is where Bunker and I live. We have a gorgeous river valley and the worlds biggest mall. (Lots of Shoe Stores for Darcy). But I don't think she's like to cold very much.

www.edmonton.ca
I lived in Edmonton for 4 years, and loved eveyr second of it. I'd go back in a heartbeat..I have a brother in Edmonton, a sister in Cold Lake (ex-military) and a brother in Lac LaBiche.

My 12 yr old neice volunteers at the Cold Lake shelter walking dogs...Think it's in the genes? LOL
Next time you visit, we should get the Pups together.

Won't be for a while, as it is 2000 mile (close to 3000 km) drive, but hey with the pooch, that would be a blast!
Would be entertaining for sure.
I live in Northumberland Pa. Population is around 3,600. We have a river called the Susquehanna on which is the worlds largest inflatable dam. They put the dam up in the spring and turn the river into I think they call it Lake Augusta. I looked the official website for Sunbury which is across the river and a tad bigger than Northumberland but their aren't many pics on it. I think it is quite beautiful here. The younger people all seem to want to move away d/t lack of excitement , jobs etc. but alot move alway and then gravitate back. Were within a 3 hr. drive of three major cities Baltimore , Philadelphia and New York. So if ya want excitement you can go on a day trip or overnight.I'll have to take some of my own pics and post them. Maybe they'll use them on the official city website cause they need some.lol
