Favorite Dog Breeds

What are your top 3 favorite dog breeds, what do you know about the breeds you choose to be in your top 3, and why did you choose those breeds?

Mine, in order, are

#1 Old English Sheepdogs
(we all know lots about these furry clowns  )
They are my favorite breed because of their loving, clownish personalities, and their ability to look like shaggy jokesters or majestic in full coat too. They always make me smile and laugh, and just have so much love to give.

#2 Great Danes
These dogs are called the "apollo of dogs" for good reason. They are stunning to look at, but also gentle giants as well. They can have the lazy couch potato attitude but still be a very athletic dog.
I've always loved danes, but sadly, their lifespan is often not very long in comparison to many breeds.

#3 Siberian Huskies
Huskies are top athletes, very intelligent, and graceful... elegant is the word I would use to describe most huskies I've met.
I would love to be involved with sled dogs, not necessarily racing, but training and enjoying the dogs ability to run and share the thrill with me.

I also really love boxers, coton de tulears, schnauzers, bouviers, newfoundlands, and cairn terriers. :) Oh who am I kidding, I love them all LOL
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
1. Sheepdogs ..of course...plentitudes of reasons

2. Golden Retrievers, they are such good family pets and I loved mine so much when I was a kid.

3. Bichon, they are like little stuffed animals. So creative and fun. Besides, nothing like having your favorite pet, held in your favorite purse.
1. Sheepdog -- for all the reasons we discuss on the forum. Mostly incredibly happy personality and adorable looks.

2. Bernese Mountain Dog -- what a big cozy dog and I love the tri-color markings. But they don't live long enough. :(

3. Hmmm. . . maybe Boxer. They are so sweet.
1. Boxers...Love that face, miss that face so much, will remain one of my biggest regrets not making it work with Jackson. Given the opportunity to have another I would in a sec.

2. OES....Judging solely on owning Remy, she is the best dog to fit with the family in every aspect of our life. Ever since I was in grade 3 and the Mr Muggs series I've wanted this breed.

3. Tibetan Terriers...so cute, in a mid size pkg, shaggy fur, non shedding and did I say cute. They also have snowshoes for feet, so are great for walking in our snow.

Can I do honorable mention: I love the Hooch Mastiff, and St Benards but they drool too much so would never own one.
Hooch is a Dogue De Bordeaux.... he was adorable... but all that drool! LOL
This is fun-- I like reading about what other dogs people like. But, I think it's a hard question because I like different breeds for different reasons-- some I like the looks but other temperment. So, here's 3 that are a little bit of both.

1.) OES-- but I wouldn't have said that before Clyde. They were definitely in my top 3 before but now that I actually own one, he's put me over the edge. I couldn't ask for a better dog with a sweeter disposition or more love to give. If I could have more, I would!

2.) Bergamasco-- they're an Italian sheepdog, a rare breed not yet recognized by the AKC. Rather than a big fluffy coat, they have flocks, kind of shell shaped dreadlocks, and their hair grows quite slowly. Think of a Komondor's coat, but different shaped dreadlocks! Finally, mats that you want to happen! They are supposed to have a great temperment, but much more reserved than the OES. I have yet to meet one in person but have been in contact with a breeder in the US a few times over the last year just to learn more about the breed. If you're interested: http://www.rarebreed.com/breeds/bergama ... masco.html

3.) Bernese Mountain Dog-- there are a few at the dog park that I've really grown to like. They're a fluffy dog, but not too much fluff and great energy levels and temperment. I'd have to do more research but it might be a breed I'd also be interested in someday.

There's so many more I like though. There's not too many furry faces that I couldn't fall in love with!

Jill
WOW!!tuffy one!!
Im going to say I love my doodles so much however,he wouldnt be on my top 3 favorite breed,ONLY because I so much wanted this certain breed before I got Mickey,so saying that I would say Doodles is #4......

1.Bouvier des Flanders((they are very powerful, but yet so gentle.Very smart am too please(only after you have proven too be alpha!!LOL!).The intellegence intheir eyes is so apparent.)

2.Collies (they are so sweet, gentle, loving, easy going, loves their family, lap dogs, beautiful coats, sincere eyes, medium size dog not too big not too small)I could go on but ill stop it here

3.Brussels Griffon(ok they are cute,HUGE love bugs,unique looking,high intellegent,compact size,non-sheds,little clowns,and they are just so darn irristible!! )
OES-they just make you happy :D

OES-they are so happy just to be with you :)

OES-they make every day an adventure
Very difficult...Hmmmm.

I love the herding breeds, so easy to work with and good energy level, but a year ago OES would not have made the cut, as I knew nothign about them. I also have a soft spot for the bullie breeds, having been owned by a bull-terrier once.. and then I just loved the red dobe, Muggins, that I had in a prior life........hmmmmm.

But I would have to say I will probably never have another sheltie, although they may be one of my favourite breeds right now. But if anything ever happened to my Bosley I would have another OES in a heartbeat, as I have not yet had enough of my fix. Kaye, I certainly hope you adopt out of state (or country!), as rescue sheepies are not too common up here!

So, right now:

1- OES
2- Rotti
3- Collie

Check again in a year or so, and the answers will be different.
As of tonight my favorite breeds are:

1) OES
2) Norfolk Terrier
3) Wire Haired Pointing Griffon
4) French Bull Dog
5) Polish Lowland Sheepdog
Well let's see

1) OES-(Duh)
2) Australian Shepherd-same energy level as OES, some of the same traits.
3) Blue Heeler-very loyal companions

Never guess that I like the herding breed huh? My vet laughed when I took Pud in the first time. She commented, at least you stayed in the herding breed.
I know herding group dogs, I know the personality profiles, that's my "comfort zone". So here are my pics, the first 3 from this group:

#1 OES- I love the personality, the look, the whole package. The fact that within 30 seconds of being in the prescence of one, I'm in heaven. They make me so happy whenever I'm around one! I'm not sure who ends up being more excited: the dog to see me, or me to see the dog... Plus I have a soft spot for fluffy grey animals...

#2 Shetland sheepdog/Rough Collie they're pretty a even #2. I grew up with shelties, and I love the intelligence, trainability, elegance and soul that these two breeds have. There's a familiarity that I have whenever I see one, it's kind of like coming home (probably since I've been around them since infancy) Only downside- the massive shedding in spring and fall, mountains and mountains of hair everywhere! Plus they don't have the clownish attitudes the OES have. These guys make me reminiscent, OES make me joyful.

#3 Newfoundland- these are my working group pic. I love these guys- sweet gentle giants. Again the big fluffy thing does it for me, and I love the fact that they're trained for lifesaving, which tends to make them protective without being aggresive. But they don't have quite the impact on me that OES do, there's the whole drool factory thing, and again shedding.

Thpse were the 4 choices I was between when I first started contemplating adding a dog to our lives. What really helped make up my mind was meeting all the breeds in person and getting to know them. there was just something about sheepies that delights me in a way the other breeds don't.

Karen :)
:D So much fun to read this thread!

#1 Old English Sheepies - so loveable, entertaining, adorable...we all know the reasons

#2 OES

#3 OES

I could rank on which breed I wait for when the dog shows are on tv, but for me there will always be only 1 breed.

Mom has Tibetan Terrier or as I call Tibetan Terror (I feel bad saying this though because she is now old and blind) and my Dad has 2 Dogue de Bordeauxs or as my husband calls them Dogue de Drools
8O 8O :D
Other then the obvious...OES. I from now on will never be with out a Sheepie. But after that I would say.....

#1 Boxers, we have 4. Love the high energy clownish attitude. They never grow up! They can be extremely stubborn.

#2. Boston Terriers, we have 2. BT's are just small versions of Boxers really, same attitude, goofy character and similar looks in a small body.
They are tough little dogs that have no problem keeping up with any of our big dogs.

#3 Australian Shepherd, I love there high energy level, love the odd markings and colorings of the merles. Someday I would love to have a red merle with blue eyes, they are my favorite color of Aussie.
Good idea Stacey!...this is hard, though.

1. Of course, the sheepie. My family has always thought that I had a weird obession with our family sheeper, Maggie, which was basically found to be true once I got Barns. They are all just so sweet and loving a silly and fluffy...and the way they lean up against your legs...ahhh

2. Bearded Collie--or, what I consider a modified sheepie. They have (or at least mine growing up did) similar traits and personality to a sheepdog, but with maybe more agility? and less humor?

Since those are the only 2 I've owned and liked, the rest of the list is merely looks or brief encounters...

3. Bernese Mountain dogs, Newfies, Scottish Wolf hounds, Afghan (I had a dream once that an Afghan saved me from something...)and Weimreiners

I love St. Bernards and Great Pyrenees, but they drool too much for me. My grandparents had them and I just remember the drool marks on their red tile floor! But they gave good rides for us kids!

And, on the negative side...only through bad personal experiences...shi tzus, Bouvier de Flandres...and ducks. I know ducks are not dogs, but they used to bite me when I went running, so they make my negative list!
1. oes
2. st bernard
3. newfoundland

i like big fluffy dogs what can i say
1. OES - cux they are so entertaining
2. Soft Coated Wheaton terrier - look like Teddy bears
3. Komodor/Puli - Loves the dreads, you don't brush them. Grooming is easy!!
It is interesting to read the choices people have.

Mine are:
1) OES; I love BIG fluffy dogs
2) Maltese; I love little fluffy dogs
3) Cocker Spaniels; Before Tasker I had the most wonderful buff spanial (buffy-how original) he lived to be 13 and was just the most wonderful dog. ONLY cockers with good temperment though!!
This is fun...

1. Bernese Mountain Dog - for lots of reason.. their tempermant, my Berner.. Dudley is soooooooooo laid back and easy going.. 130lbs of love...the face, the size.. the gentleness. He has been the best part of the last 4 years.. He's my Biggie Man.

2. OES - the sillyness, the mischief..the sookness. Always ready for snuggles. I love coming home after work and see him run around the yard, jumping and twirling and his bum wagging a mile a minute.

3. Toss Up .. Newfs of Saints- Again.. the size, the termpermant. Gentle giants. Someday I will own one.

Big and furry for me all the way.
1. OES: Their silliness and velcro personality

2. Rough Collie: their gentleness.

3. Weimaraner: their sensitivity to your moods. I think they can read your mind.
1. OES
2. Bearded Collies
3. Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Very interesting thread! Isn't it funny how your idea of someone is
founded or changed by their choice of dog? (- or is it just me??)

I thought this would be easy, but the top 3 is sort of hard!

#1 - OES of course
#2 (very close second and a tie to boot) Irish Wolfhound and Samoyed
#3 (also a tie) Great Pyr and Newfoundland

I have to admit I am partial to larger dogs. My favorite groups to watch
though, in the dog shows are herding and hounds.

Shellie
OES, goldens, schnauzers
1.OES
2.CHOW (mine was the most gentle dog I had ever seen)
3. a little fluffy dog like Coton de Tulear or Tibetan Terrier
1. OES
2 to 10... OES!!!
11. Mutts!
12. Bernese Mountain Dogs
13. Golden Retrivers
14. Puli
I honestly cannot name a favorite breed since I see all breeds as having their own unique attributes.
1) OES-Endless love in a zany shaggy package

2) Bedlington Terrier- I'd name one, lambchop

3) Bearded collie- huggable

4) Bernese Mountain Dog-strong, but sensitive
Lambchop! I love it
bestdogsx4 wrote:
Lambchop! I love it

Adored Sherry Lewis and Lambchop as a kid.
(Of course, that was back in the Dark ages
when we only had black and white TV)
I loved Lambchop too, I have a stuffed one that I bought for my daughter, but she didn't appreciate it so it came to live in my room on my dresser.
Okay my list:

1st choice: OES - How can anyone resist!

2nd choice: Mutts...yup ..just any ole dog even if the heritage is a bit confusing to be able to figure out. Prefer big shagged coated types..but fall in love with little ones too.

Marianne and the boys
Looks like along with oes, a lot of people like bernese mountain dogs....
To me they look like a cross between a golden retriever and a st bernard. Gorgeous dogs...
For people who have or have had one, would you say they are highly intelligent, or average?
That's a hard one Stacey... highly intelligent or average.. you will have to give me an example of what highly intelligent in a dog or average is.

Dudley hasn't done anything really stupid in the last 4 years that I've had him...he's been silly plenty of times....

I do know that it took me 2 days to potty train him, he sits, stays and does down very well. His recall is awsome, I trained him using an E-collar as I don't have a fenced yard.. it's been almost 3 years since I have had to use the collar and he knows how far he can go and then turns around. I can leave food on the counter, kitchen table and/or coffee table and walk away, go outside, use the potty, etc. and he has never ever eaten anything... never once. He understands NO... I know alot of people would disagree with me on this and a lot have.. but I trained Dudley with praise.. not treats.. the only time they (Him or Murphy) get treats is in their kong in the morning before I leave for work.

He is BIG, but gentle..he is rambunctious, but never rough, he loves to be snuggled.. but on his terms.. he loves other dogs and people.. in 4 years I have never seen him cross, jealous or aggresive. He loves us and especially my step-son who just came to live with us last year.

Is he a typical Bernese?.. I don't know.. but I do like to believe he is one-of-a-kind. Based on my experience with Dudley.. he won't be my last.

Brenda
Hi Brenda,

When I viewed your photos previously at dogster and saw I pic of Dudley as a baby I thought, "CUTE, CUTE, CUTE"..they are adorable as puppies!! He's grown into a handsome and dignified looking fellow.

Marianne and the boys
He sounds very intelligent if he housetrained that fast.
I would consider a golden retriever, border collie, poodles, german shepherds highly intelligent. I would consider something like a hound average intelligence, and I would say most oes at the lower end, but I think afghans are at the bottom. (no offense to afghan lovers)
Just my opinion anyway... it depends on what people look for as far as intelligence goes. Studies to determine dog intelligence usually go by how many repeats it takes of a new command before they "get it" but I think that the dogs ability to think out a situation should count for something too.
Dancer for example is an extremely smart dog, it amazes me the stuff she manages to think of, or think her way out of.... she learns a command after only 2 or 3 repeats if she wants to. If she doesn't want to, she just doesn't do it. LOL She even knows at least ten different toys by name, and will search them out in the order I ask for them in.
Sky will do anything we tell her to do, but often takes longer to learn basic commands. She doesn't seem to learn things like running into a tree hurts and not to do it again. LOL She also does not get the bring me a toy game at all. She's a love bug though, so that's ok. LOL
I love my OES, but I think my wife and I are going to get a Bernese Mountain Dog next. http://www.petstew.com/bernese-mountain-dog-pictures.html. Anyone ever had one? Would you recomend? I'm worried they might be kind of hard to find
#1 OES. after my sister rescued one, I fell immediately in love
#2 OES. personally, i cannot imagine another breed
#3 Beardie. I had one before Patch, she was a great dog and just beautiful. I loved her to death, but my heart is with the OES.

I also think that because of Patch's breed she makes such a difference at the nursing homes and psychiatric hospital we visit; for the most part, everyone loves and reaches out to her.
I forgot to say that my fav breed has to be a rescue; Patch desperately needed a home and I desperately needed to be rescued out of my dogless world after mine died.

I haven't had one - I know someone who did (or does) I do know they are susceptible to some diseases and have a shorter life expectancy than the normal OES you run into. I also like the Swiss Mountain dog and the Appenzeller - they all look a lot a like
1. Tie for OES and Chinese Shar-Pei (that is only if they are all like Kobe - no clue how accurate a representative of the breed she is)

2. Wire Fox Terrier

3. I'm fascinated by Briards, Komondors and Pulis. I don't know that I could handle owning one, but they are gorgeous.
Well in no order GSD OES and Lab but LOVE mutts and I always wanted a PBGV :excited:

4dog night
As most of you know, I don't have a dog, but when I get one, it will be an OES of course. I also love Irish Setters (had one growing up, she was the sweetest dog evah) and rough Collies. I like standard Poodles also. I think wire-hair Fox Terriers are adorable. Actually, there's not many breeds I wouldn't like, but I don't particularly care for smooth/sleek dogs. I like hair!
1) Airedale Terrier- smart, loyal, funny as heck, clowns, sweet

2) OES- sweet, funny, clownish, loving

3) Siberian Husky
OES, Briard, and a tie between a Spinone and an Irish Wolfhound :D
1- OES - I absolutely love every single thing about this breed from appearance to personality.

2 - Irish Wolfhound - Huge, beautiful, intelligent, graceful. My friend had one that lived to be 11 and he was absolutely gorgeous and such a sweetheart.

3 - Great Dane - Stunning to look at. Temperament, Size, personality, great family dog.

Arthur LOVES Berners (Bernese Mountain Dogs) as do I, but they have a laundry list of health problems. Life span is 7-10 years. Great family dog, they shed A LOT, major drool is a given.

Only reason why we've never owned these other breeds...I'm afraid to get too attached because their life spans are rather short...
My answer has definitely changed since the first time I remember answering threads like this on here.

1. OES'

2. golden/labradoodles

3. maybe a tie between standard poodles/portuguese waterdogs/briards but really it's only my #1&2 I talk about getting now.

Amazing how we change since several years ago, I would have only listed toy dogs (Coton and havanese).
oh my gosh i forgot to add Irish Wolfhounds! We nearly went for one of those instead of an OES, but decided it was just too big for us at this point in time. Har.

Beautiful creatures, they are. Didn't think of it till I talked to hubby about going to Irish Fest this weekend! :P
Firstly, I have to preface my preferances with the statement that I love all sorts of dogs. I volunteer with a rescue out here, I have have had plenty of little buddies that were just so awesome.

Josh will only ever let us have OES, because to him, there simply is no other dog for our family.

Now, all that out of the way, I'd have to say my 3 favorites are as follows:

1) Old English Sheepdogs - Of course
2) Polish Lowland Sheepdogs - smaller version of the OES in looks, but different in temperment
3) Bearded Collies - I knew the sweetest one back home and fell in love with her.
1) Old English Sheepdog - my ALLTIME fav dog since I'm a child!
I watched an american movie in the 60's and there was a Sheepie inside, someone might know it, I only can remember it was a series and it was called "My friend Lad" and Lad was the Old English! If anyone knows anything about this film please let me know as I have never seen it since i was a child and it reminds me to my childhood!

2) Newfoundland - we had a familydog only once and it was a Newfoundland called Barry. We could even ride on him as I was still only 2! He was huge, clumsy, funny and very playful and hairy!

3) Bernese mountain Dog - reminds me to the swiss alps!
1. OES, of course

2. Shih Tzu

3. Tibetan Terrier
Is there anything other than an OES? I don't even know if I would own a dog that wasn't an OES anymore.
As far as owning and raising a dog--I would only go with oes--so I guess #1-oes
#2-oes
#3-oes

I do love all dogs and have friends who have different breeds and I adore their dogs. I have a friend who has an adorable goldendoodle--he is a great dog.
Another friend has a female Standard Poodle who is probably the most intelligent dog I have ever met to date.
And another friend has a Basset that I adore.

Over the years we have had several different breeds--we had a Blonde Lab that was a great pet. We had a Golden that had MANY health issues--we loved each of those pets dearly but my heart was always with my first oes--who to this day I think of every day! So when my time allowed me to give the care--grooming and exercise that the oes needed--I went straight back to the breed.

I know that in my house from now on-- we will always have oes as our #1 choice for pets.
Holy cow, that's hard to narrow down. I would say:

1. OES
2. Bull terrier
3. PBGV

They're all such merry dogs - I love the silliness and joy of living they bring into a home.
My own answers have changed since I started this thread.... now I would have to say
#1- OES of course
#2- Boxer (I sooooo want a boxer puppy)
#3- a tie between standard poodle and great dane
No 1 OES
Then I cant pick I just love all dogs.
But in the last few weeks we have started meeting a Bernese Mountain Dog at the offlead park. Her name is Lotti and she is huge for a female.
At 2 years old she's still a big puppy and Tiggy is in love!! Usually Tiggy is a bit nervous around dogs bigger than her but not Lotti, she runs and plays with her till Lotti needs a rest, then she stands beside her waiting for her to get up and play again. :hearts:
1. OES
2. GSD
3. Boxer

That's what I used to think before we adopted our Golden, Tesa! :D
I'd still keep OES at the top. I'll always have one.

I love the look of a corded dog, but now that I own one, it'll probably be my last one unless I live in a drier climate. I love Bear and the Komondor temperament-- I know, without a doubt, that no one will ever get near us or harm us with him around and it's nice to have that kind of security wrapped in a dreadlocked package that loves you like crazy. However, it's not easy to keep a Komondor clean and it's even harder to keep one from smelling like a mildewy mess if you have a couple of days of rain...or snow...or if he just decides to lay in the water bowl constantly, as Bear does. Wet mud is just a disaster. Most dogs, if they're dirty or stinky, you toss them in the tub and you're all set. With a Komondor, a bath and dry can be a many day process. It's a huge pain. I feel like he's never dry.

I'm scratching Bernese Mountain Dogs off my list. I still like them but I don't want one. One thing I know I don't want is a large breed, shedding dog.

For my next dog, I think I want a little dog. Nothing super little but maybe something that could go on a plane with me. I've been leaning toward a Havanese but I know James would like a Westie or a Bichon so since I pick all the animals, it might be nice to give him a chance.

Havanese are beautiful lil' doggies that have a slight OES appearance in the head and somewhat "shaggy." Some people I know in the show circuit that have these dogs always say how much they absolutely love this breed (and they had show OES for over 30 years) I was smitten when I saw the Havanese in person.... Arthur, not so much -
good call Jill -
^^

When we saw one in person (show quality) for the first time, we were actually shocked at how fragile (bone structure) they were under the coat. This particular one seemed more like my maltese but bigger. The one thing we're wanting to avoid in our next dog is being too fragile DUE to our big dogs. However, other ones I've seen are a little bigger which is what I like!! :)

I can't do dogs that shed which is also why bernese, etc aren't on my list. Otherwise, I love them to death.
Of course an OES is on top of the list, and since we have a GSD, that breed would be on the list as well.
So #3 on the list would be a Spinone, Finnigan was almost a spinone, I love them, especially the orange ones! They have human-looking eyes like the OES and are good family dogs. If I could have two other breeds it would be a newfie or a tibetian mastiff, they look like big bears. My friend has one and he is such a kind old soul.

Plus, you can cord a Havanese, too. The idea of a corded dog that I can pick to keep from getting dirty is much more appealing. :)

Jo, from what I understand, they should have a pretty solid bone structure that can withstand a good amount of play. They shouldn't be delicate like a Pom or a Maltese. They're supposed to be a pretty hardy dog for a toy, which is kind of my attraction to them.

Actually, I just remembered, your breeder has one rolling with their big guys! ;)
