She did Suffer from BLOAT in the past and the vet never told us anything about giving her ice cubes. Most dogs LOVE ice cubes... I haven't ever heard of this sort of problem before....Any suggestions as to why this can happen???? Thanks! Michelina~ |

I don't know why it happens, but it happens to my parents' sheepdog, too. And she LOVES ice cubes. She'll come from anywhere in the house, sound asleep, etc when she hears them. She used to be fine but about 4 years ago (when she was 6) she started throwing them up. So no more ice cubes for her--it is so sad to see her run to the kitchen, only to be denied... |
I think it happens to some dogs because of the shock of something cold. Ice cubes are just water of course, so there is nothing wrong with giving them.
Often if a dog is a little dehydrated, the combination of the cold and the dehydration can make them vomit. My dogs went through a phase where they were throwing up every time I gave them water. Switching to room temp water instead of cold water helped, but then I realized Sky was gulping all the water too fast and Dancer wasn't getting enough, so when Dancer did drink, she vomited it up immediately. Now they have their water in their crates only during the day so I know each is getting enough, and who drinks how much. There is also a water bowl left out, but most of the time they spill that one. LOL |
Thank you.... your insight was appreciated. That would make sense. I know the vet did tell us to give her room temperature water after we called him about the vomiting
