hello from TN

I met Daisy Mae in July at the Animal Shelter in Mid July/ I moved from VT to TN in late May and brought 2 cats with me. One was hit by a car and killed about that time. I have almost always had cats and dogs in my home, my last dog a large german shepard that became VERY agressive toward other people and I had him put down before he hurt someone. This was very hard for me to do but I felt it was necessary. My love of the dog wouldn't justify some child being hurt.

Anyway, after I moved I thought another dog would help me emotionally as I do not know anyone in this area and was starting to feel lonely. So I went to the animal shelter thinking I would adopt an older mixed breed dog. I even found one there that was just about what I was thinking of getting, but of course I continuied to look at all of them. That's when I found Daisy - a 3 mo old they listed as a Sheep Dog/terrier mix and the minute I looked into her eyes, I fell in love.

In an attempt to be reasponsible, I left that day and came home to sleep on it. The next day I returned to the shelter and spent some time with both dogs, but the minute I put the leash on Daisy and brought her out of the cage, she came out and stood between my legs just as my german shepherd always did. That was it for me. I brought her home with me that day and will never regret it.

Although she was listed as "mixed", the vet said he thought she was strictly OES (even though she has her tail - which I would never part with) I did not have any experience with an OES and I started checking out on line and found this great place. To me it doesn't matter whether she is mixed or not, she took my heart that first day.

Initially she was not interested in treats and the only reward she was interested in was being told she was a good girl and to be given lots of love, but since starting training classes and seeing the other dogs geting treats, she has decided she wants them also.

I agree with all the messages I have read in this forum that OES are special dogs and very smart. Although she can be willful at time, she tries to do whatever is asked of her if I can make her understamd what it is that I want her to do. I highnly recommend training classes and agree with everything I have read about positive training. Negative comments to her do not work at all.

Just wanted to thank you all for the comments that I have read here and to let you know I find it very helpful.

I got my sheepie in much the same way. She was at the pound as a 3 month old. (she's 5 months now)
She is a purebred with a tail. :D
I just looked at her pictures and she really is a cutie!
Wow she's beautiful! Your pictures are lovely. Welcome!
She is gorgeous. Congrats to both you and Daisy Mae.
I got my OES from the local shelter last December he was 10 mos old.
He is the most loving dog I have had since I was a kid.
I grew up with an OES named Daisy :D
She was my older sister by a year. My parents also rescued her.

Welcome to you and Daisy Mae!! She's just beautiful!! Thank you for sharing your story with us and posting her pictures. We hope you'll visit often. You'll find friendly, supportive folks and great advise for any questions you may have.

P.S. What part of TN?? :D
Daisy and I live in Johnson City, TN, however I may need to relocate further west in order to find a job.

Daisy and I have enjoyed having the summer off and it was really good to have the time to spend w/ her but will need to return to work. I'm sure it will be quite an adjustment for her but she does like to eat. She generally goes everywhere with me but does get left home for a few hours by herself (and the cat) now and then. Thankfully the only thing she gets into is to pull my shoes out of the closet and chew on the laces of my sneakers so I haven't tried to crate her.

When I first brought her home she was 3 mos old and got car sick every time out but is much better now at 6-1/2 mos. Since I plan on making a car trip to VT next summer, she needs to get used to it. Now she gets sick mostly on very curvy roads or making a lot of sharp turns.
Welcome!!!! Daisy Mae is really cute!

Thanks for adopting!
Try giving her some ginger snaps, it will help calm her stomach.
I would suggest you start to leave her home alone for periods of time, so that she gets used to it. What sometimes happens is that a dog that is used to having her person with her most of the time is suddenly left alone, and is stressed about it. That is when they get start chewing and getting into stuf. Not out of spite, or anything liek that, but out of stress, and they don't know how to handle it. You can start leaving her little by little during the day, even if you don't have to. Maybe with a stuffed Kong. Deending on how that goes you may reconsider that crate-training :D
Welcome! Adorable pup! She is lucky to have found you and vice versa.
Hi

Welcome to you and Daisy-Mae!! She looks adorable and personally I love the tails as my first OES was adopted from a Shelter and had a beautiful tail.

Now I have my three boys (Merlin, Panda and Blue) whom always look forward to having a new girl sheepie join the gang. They are sending sheepie kisses over to Daisy.

I'm also mom to four kitties and one is named Daisy (great name!)

A word of warning this place can be addicting..so many nice people and good conversation here.

Marianne and the boys
Welcome to you and Daisy Mae!! She's a beautiful girl, and sure looks pretty much full sheepie to me!

Well, the older she gets the more I am convinced she is a full sheepie, not that it really matters. She is the love of my life (my uprights excluded) and keeps me getting up each day (by 7 am) and moving (must walk a min of 2-3 mi/day) which is good for both of us.

She just finishe her Beginner Training class and we are looking forward to the next. She has finally learned to like treats (when I brought her home from the shelter she would do anything for a "good girl" and I took packages of treats to the shelter because she would not touch them} which is making training in some areas (like giving me the ball) a little easier. She is such a love.

She loves just about everyone and I think I am going to try to have her certified as a therapy dog. I think she will be very good at it and enjoy it, although it is not something I would do myself {I find it difficult - but maybe this is why she was brought into my life).

Anyway, this forum is great. I have learned a lot just reading all the postings and appreciate the help even when I don't respond. BAsically very shy, introverted person. With Daisy this can't help but change.

Congrats on finishing your training class!

Sheepies are such social butterflies by nature, you can't help but get caught up in their enthusiasm (sp?) for life! :D
