Mallory is being spayed today

Mallory goes in this morning to be spayed. And here I have already been up 2 hours because I can't sleep, my stomach is in knots and I dread taking her in.
The reason this spaying is so agonizing for me is my first OES had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia that was used, so when she got home that night she started vomiting very heavily and broke open the sutures.
We took her back to the vet that night. Her incision was packed and wrapped tight and the next morning she was put under with gas to repair the incision line.
She didn't wake up for 8 hours and as she did she started seizing. She was shot so full of phenobarb, it put her in a coma. In the mean time her temp spiked to 104.2 and she spent almost two days laying in a bathtub full of ice. Thank goodness she was asleep through it all. She was kept immobilized for 5 days straight.
She was transported nightly to the emergency clinic because she had to have round the clock care.
I remember that first night, Dr. Marshall met my Mom and I at the clinic. It got REALLY late and he promised he wouldn't leave her alone and told me to go home and sleep. When I went in to work the next morning (I was a vet assistant at the clinic she was at) I walked into the kennel to check on her and Dr. Marshall was sitting in the run leaned against the wall, blanket across his legs and over Trouble with her head in his lap, sound asleep. (He was an awesome vet)
Trouble did make it. After a long recovery time.
But ever since then I have been so scared to put any of my gang under. Esp with Mallory being an OES, I'm just having visions of what happened with Trouble all over again.
It's amazing that all that happened with Trouble 22 years ago. You think it would be a distant memory and I wouldn't even think about it, but I am really scared today. Although I have full confidence in the vet we use I guess it's just human nature to worry.
Anybody elses Sheepie ever had a reaction like Trouble did? I'd be very curious to hear about it.

Have not had that kind of experience, so glad things did finally work out.
Just wanted to send well wishes to you and Mallory.
Oh my... I can understand why you're frightened. This must be very difficult but just keep saying that it needs to be done. Most do very well and vet techniques, equipment and meds have probably changed a lot over the 22 years.

I've never had any bad spay experiences with any of our dogs and we've had 6 females spayed over the past 12 years... Panda arrived already spayed. 3 are full-sheepies and 1 was a sheepie-mix. I know how this ties you up in knots the day before and of surgery... I'm not a good waiter and I'm a worrier. Mallory should be home recovering soon and tomorrow will probably act as if nothing ever happened. Then it will be finding ways to keep her calm while she heals.

Earlier this year we had our special little sheepie spayed... she's mostly blind with a cleft palate and nose deformity. Our vet recommended using a gas anesthetic so it would be easier on her. She did very well.

Even with this said, I know it will be a long day for you. Please keep us posted on how your baby does.
Good luck, Mallory!
We're sending good thoughts your way!

And kudos to Dr. Marshall . . . . :)
You'll do great Mallory! But extra treats will be in order to hasten your recovery :)
Prayers already on their way for you, Mallory (and Mr. Underfoot - the kitty). :)
I would like to tell you guys a secret. Ususally when the vets say that the dog had an alergic reaction to the anesthesia, they are usually saying that something wasnt monitored correctly or something went wrong that they werent expecting or human error that they had to fix. Anesthetic gas doesnt do anything really to the patient although rare occurences have been noted about alergic reactions. So it is possible that your other dog had a reaction. I dont know how long ago your other dog was spayed but now a days they have better anesthetic equipment and monitoring so that this sort of thing doesnt happen. Isofluorane, the anesthetic gas, is perfectly safe so if they do have a reaction it could be due to the induction agent that is given. Some dogs dont do well on either ace and torb or dorm and torb but no one knows that until they induce. I honestly wouldnt be too worried because there are very capable techs monitoring your animal and are doing everything to keep them safe. I will still say good luck but I bet everything will work out just fine and she will be home in no time. Just remember, no food for that day when she gets home and only a little water. No licking the incision site and just let her be. She will be back to normal in a day or 2. Let us know how it goes ok.
Your experience is much, much worse but my dog Lucy was spayed twice, sort of. The shelter didn't think she was spayed so when I took her to have it done, it turned out it was for nothing. She didn't weather the surgery well and the recovery time was slow. She was miserable and wouldn't even walk for a week. I was very nervous when Clyde was being neutered for that reason because I knew how hard it was on poor Lucy. However, to this day, I still don't think Clyde knows that he was neutered! He came home more bouncy than ever!

Don't worry, I'm sure Mallory will come through with flying colors.
