My Ears Are Ringing!!!

Owwwww so here it is Halloween and I'm feeling like a convict hiding out. Big meanie me....no Halloween treats for the kiddies this year...no lights on...I'm hiding out in my computer room with Panda.

Owwww my ears!! He's been barking nonstop poor boy as the fireworks are really terrifying to him..so hense no answering the door or going to a party for me. Not that this is entirely bad however, I finally caught up on the post on this forum!

Owww so except for his shrill barking and my calming words (which have a little effect) and his munching on a chicken burger (my dinner) laced with Nature's Remedy..(uh that was after I decided not to eat it)..all is good with the world.

All the kitties are captured and placed in my bedroom so all are safe for the night. Ahhh another year survived!

Thanks for the chance to ramble.

Poor Panda! Those fireworks

We had only 4 trick or treaters tonight !!!!!!!!!!!
Last year, none.

We live in the country, so maybe parents are having more
parties instead....

Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!
We didn't give out candy, since my husband just got home from the hospital after surgery, I didn't want people at the door disturbing him all night. Plus Dancer and Sky would have barked like mad.
Even Abby barked tonight at one little devil, a howling wolf song bark, which her first born son Kenai copied. It was hilarious, he scared himself and hid behind the pool. (They just learned to get out of the pool, and as soon as they get out they howl because they are lost....lol)
We don't have firewokrs around here at this time of year, but that's one thing my dogs don;t react to. Go figure.
The kids brought home so much candy I just had to weigh it. 25 pounds of candy. I carried it all over town and home, so I guess a lot of it is MINE> :D
Another holiday over, yay!
Willowsprite, Hope your hubby is doing fine.

We didn't give out this year either. No fireworks here either. Well, at least not tonight. Only had one batch of kids knock on the door (before no porch light time - to show no candy here) but, by the time I looked out they were leaving. Whoops, hope no fireworks tomorrow, they were my nephews kids from next door.

Like you, don't get many where we live so its not worth the calories I have to ingest because I bought WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to much candy for us, whoops I meant to say a handful of kids.
Willowsprit, hope your husband is better FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a big fan of Halloween. I was raised in a family that did not celebrate it and so didn't make a big deal over it with my kids. They did the school thing but nit the trick or treat thing. I never could understand the door tot door begging for candy routine. Now that I live WAY out in the country there are no treat or treaters , THANK GOODNESS!!!

But Doug bought a great big bag of cand "just in case" . Fortunately it's peanut butter cups, his favorite (I don't like them).

I never could understand at the Hospital the nurses coming in dressed up for Halloween. I mean, can you imagine being really sick and having someone come in dressed up as a ghost or witch or devil?????? I just never got the point of the whole thing!!!!

So Marianne, don't feel like a meanie you aren't alone!!!
Willowsprite, what's your address? 25 pounds of candy???? Your kids MUST need help eating all that. I'll be right over.

Hope your hubby is feeling better.
Well, thank goodness Halloween is over. The kids started coming at 5pm..in truck loads...we gave out 35 lbs of candy and ran out at 7:15..that my folks, is 10 large bags of candy...and we were wiped out early this year...Panda only barked a few times and people just loved the cheerleader....I told them she was saying rah rah rah :D ...the most disconsterting this year was a mid 70's old woman wearing a house dress with her own bag....she actually smiled and said trick or treat...lol..what are you going to do? Not give her any candy??!! Just for the gall of it, she had to get something....
Wow....that's a lot of candy to give out! I had about five or six trick or treaters - that's it. I left my lights on until about 8:30 p.m. I figured that was long enough. But, I live in a very rural area, so not many kids come out that far.

I would've had to laugh at the 70+ woman doing her own trick or treating! :D
MY most disconcerting trick or treater (well, not really disconcerting, but a little aggravating...) was a young dad who came to our door (and some of these kids look really old to me, so at first it was hard to tell he wasn't just an older kid) and he had his daughter in a stroller at the bottom of our steps (only 3 steps) and she wasn't even saying trick or treat from the stroller or anything. I just stood there with the candy bowl in my hand, not giving him any candy or saying anything...maybe I'm mean, but I think if the kids are old enough, they should work for their candy! (And the girl in the stroller looked about 4, so she could definitely walk and talk) So finally, after about 5 seconds, her dad said, come here, and she got up and came to the door. Plus, you could tell that these people weren't from our neighborhood, which is fine with me, but come on, put some effort into it! At least the girl was dressed up, though.
Well, we only had about 15 kids :(
I bought 5 bags of candy... I guess more for me :) ..not that I need it.
Poor Hayley missed her first Halloween  She had a fever.
So I had to wait until she went to sleep at 7pm to head out with Ryan.
Last year we must have hit 50 houses and of those houses only 12 people answered their door. This year we hit the jackpot. We skipped those streets that we had gone to last year. Nobody had their lights on. We hit two other streets and made out like bandits. Ryan had to ask everyone their names and even got into a fight with a skeleton at a haunted house.
These people had covered their entryway and you had to walk thru it to get the candy. They had a strobe light and sound effects. So I walked in to show Ryan it wasn't scary. There was a grim reaper standing guard when I walked in and a skeleton sitting by the door. The skeleton waved and I thought it was mechanical by the way it moved. I also didn't think the grim reaper was a real person when I turned around to leave he was blocking my exit. I jumped...then turned around to see the skeleton standing up. Ryan refused to leave. Finally both of the men came out to talk to him. He shook their hands and asked the grim reaper to take his mask off. He said no, and Ryan threatened to kick his butt 8O
They gave him more candy and finally we left. The first haunted house Ryan refused to go to and told everyone on the block he was scared. lol

Maybe you shoulda had a can of ensure on hand for her!!!!
It seriously bums me out now how kids just expect the candy now and don't get excited or anything. One group of younger kids came by last night and they just stood there, silent and looking really bored, until I said, what no trick or treat? Then I got the weakest attempt at "Trick or Treat" I'd ever heard. From thjat point on, I gave out varying quantities of candy based on enthusiasm and costume.

We didn't get too many kids but some were really cool. A group of older kids came by dressed as KISS and looked awesome. I don't even care if you're too old for trick or treating if you look good! Clyde was a big hit with evrybody though!
There were some pretty cool costumes around here too... I saw a couple of kids dressed as giant dice, and of course the usual princesses, fairies, angels, devils, ghosts etc, one kids as a devil or demon or something looked awesome, face makeup worthy of a secial effects crew for a movie. LOL
My kids were just ninjas, they decided to be the same (again!) I wish they would be more individual, but that will come in time i guess.
Ashley dressed up as a character from one of her favorite anime shows, inyuasha or something like that. She looked cool but I don;t remember the name of her character...hoe sad is that? LOL

By the way, thanks for the well wishes for my hubby.... he's not doing very well yet, so I stayed home again today. I'm going to have to go back to work tomorrow, but I'm worried about leaving him.... hopefully by tomorrow it won't be so bad. I'll come home at lunch to check on him too.
ButtersStotch,
My husband's coworker was so fed up with the kids that just stood there with their bags open she made two sets of bags up.
One with candy for the kids that said "Trick or Treat"
One with pinto beans for the kids that said nothing...lol
I loved the idea.

We gave out tons of candy at the store last night, mostly to teenagers  We had good stuff and they all complained they wanted free subs instead  Pinto beans next year
The kids at school (where I work) dressed up and had a parade through school. We cracked up when we saw this one 4th grader --- he was dressed up like a pimp!!! I can't imagine letting your kid come to school dressed that way but I must admit - he was hilarious!!
We had childern out the ying yang!! It was so much fun.My 17yr old handed out he goods, and me and my 9yr old w/ my best friend went door too door. What a blast!!!the weather is still nice!!WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!So many cute costumes, alot of tiny babies in Sweet pea pods!!hehe!!Precious!!

Being that I am a nurse and have worked in hospitals, nurseing homes,etc...the reason we nurses and Dr.s dress up for Halloween is too raise the spirits of the people that come into the setting. To some ( i should add here they are in the minority) it is werid too have their caregivers dressed in costumes, but the majority of people in the hospital realize it is halloween and appreciate the efforts of the nurseing staff too raise the spirits of the people infact in the hospital. Not just adults go too the hospital, many kids arrive there for whatever reason, and actually realx a bit when they see nurses acting silly and wearing a costume. Also nurseing homes is a great place too dress up for Halloween.Oh the stories I have been told by many elderly at Halloween.Wearing a costume in no way makes the nurseing staff unprofessional, but as we have bene told it really puts people at ease right away, and thats the start of my job.

Also,I saw many cute pets last night in costumes!!My goodness I wish I was creative like some!!
We didn't have any trick-or-treaters. :( I was looking forward to having some too...had some good candy and even toys to pass out to them. Now, I guess we'll have to eat all the candy...
I never ever heard of fireworks on Haloween how odd. They don't do that around here that I know of. Around the fourth of July about a week before and after but never at Halloween. I noticed a couple of different posts mentioned the fireworks at Halloween also. 8O
Hi,

It's horrible here ...worse than July 1st (Canada's birthday) or New Years. In years past temporary stores selling fireworks would set up in the month of Oct...one on almost every block as the income/profits must be amazing. Only requirements were you had to be at least 19. So almost every teen would get someone older to buy them. Firecrackers were banned a few years ago but somehow kids still get ahold of them.

Homes catching fire, kids losing fingers, teens shooting bottle rockets at each other..and shelters full of animals after Halloween that panicked and ran resulting in being lost. Thankfully this year for the first time my city banned the stores and fireworks could only be purchased with a permit. You still heard them..but no where near as bad as years past. Last year heard them going off for the entire month and the bottle rockets and firecrackers were the worse (piercing sounds) which drove the dogs crazy..especially Panda.

The trouble is neighboring municipalities were still selling them so it was only a matter of driving 1/2 hour if someone was intent on getting them. This year the police told me they had a zero % tolerance for anyone setting off fireworks with no permit. It did make a difference and perhaps some day I will enjoy Halloween like I did in the past.

I used to spend months in preparation making life size monsters out of paper mache, answering the door in funny ghoulish costume, music, lighted ghost..blacked out garage made out like Haunted House..ect..people used to refer to me as the Halloween lady. Now years later I turn out the lights and just sit home with the dogs whom are so stressed over the noises. Hopefully with the ban and with each year getting better with Panda I can someday build my Haunted House again. I miss seeing the cute trick or treaters.

Its the same here I rally do not like it
That's so sad! It's terrible to have such a fun holiday wrecked by bad behavior! The fireworks get me too- it's way to cold in MN for fireworks in the autumn. (it's all the parents can do to make sure the really little ones are warm enough to go out in the first place!!) I'd never heard of such a thing till you mentioned it, Marianne! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. We had lots of trick n treaters at the house- our first holiday was a big success. I got compliments on my white sheepie pumpkin- though not as artistic as a lot of the pumpkins I saw (wow- those carvers are awesome) it was cute! Some really adorable little ones: a bumble bee, a duck, and a fairy princess were my favorties. Especially the fairy princess, she liked the cats, and who doesn't like a child who enjoys your pets?

Karen :)
That really does stink. That truly is the first I ever heard of fireworks on Halloween. It's bad enough if your dogs scared on the Fourth of July. Its funny how traditions vary even in the U.S.Our one neighbor was mad at me because I called him at work to tell him his Saint Bernard was in the middle of the road and I had to risk getting hit by a truck twice in one month so it wouldn't get killed. It would be different if it was an accident and got out of the yard or off the leash but he just doesn't care. He told me I was the rudest person he ever met after I yelled and swore at him but I don't care. The clincher was I was out on my screened in porch reading and someone threw a bunch of inchers on my roof.Scared me and the dogs to death. I went in the car looking for him but I couln't have proved he did it unless I caught him.
