Hi Kaye,
Your story is about the same as ours but we still breed. Well said. Thanks for saying it. Roland |
Another side to it is also if no reputable breeders with healthy, conformation to standard dogs with typical great temperments etc breeds, then the legacy of the breed will disappear to be left only with mill rejects and rescued dogs from mills, BYB's etc.
To stop the breed from being ruined we need to clamp down on mills etc, shut them down, enforce animal control laws, and encourage new breeders to do it right with the best lines they can get, showing, mentoring from experienced breeders, health testing and ethical breeding. Breeders need to be responsible for what they bring into the world for the life of the dog. Period. |
How would you recommend shutting down puppymills, commercial breeders and ETC???? Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue |
Well people could start by trying.
Most assume there is nothing you can do so they never do anything. You CAN do something about it. You can write to congress, make a big stink about it, boycott their premises, call humane societies and animal control. Harrass them daily if you must, but get them to do something about it, if only to pacify you. Pretend to be a person wanting a puppy, go to their place and take pics, then report them, or submit articles to your local newspapers. An important way to slow them down is to NOT buy pups from them, not to empty a cage for another poor dog to fill it again with puppies who mostly will be sick, and miserable, through no fault of their own to be sure. Not to buy pups from pet stores, ever, because again, it creates a demand for that mill to breed again if the pet stores can move their "product" It can be done, I've seen it happen.... if even one is shut down it may help others to re evaluate their so called easy cash flow. If they are forced to practice more humanely and follow laws that are actually enforced, it will not be so profitable for them. A lot of them won't bother anymore if people make it difficult enough for them. It won;t solve the problem completely, but it WILL help. Nothing will change if we don't at least make the effort. |
Great ideas. I have helped personally in shuttting puppymills down.....Took Pictures. Sent them to AKC.........spent 8 months on one miller...Many of the Babies had to be PTS. Worked and bathed and tried to save as many as we could. The Judge fined then $500 and gave them the Babies back. They moved out of State to Missouri. Stood out in front of pet stores. You are right there are things an indivual can do...Worked at the Humane Society for 4 years... Still Help Them......Although there is strenght in numbers. Belong to several very active groups natatioanlly that do what they say they will do. Now what do you think can be done about commercial breeders? I really don't think the general public understands the difference......Knowledge of the problem will help.........Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue |
As a consumer and owner of Barney, bought as a pup from a great Missouri Breeder, and a Rescue I think there are great blessings to the dog and the owner in each case. Barney was a great experience to raise from a puppy, and Maggie had her own set of rewarding challenges. You couldn't buy either one of them from me for a million dollars.
As an aside, and in no way suggesting controversy about Missouri's reputation as a puppy mill state, I have over the years purchased a number of dogs from Missouri Breeders. None were puppy mills. All my experiences with the dogs were great. Some of the breeders were small occasional family operations, others showed there dogs. Frankly I was amazed to find out that Missouri was home to some many questionable operations. However if you use common sense and good business sense you can find the good breeders. I think the problem exists because of lack of public pressure on our legislators. Happy Halloween .. Pleasant Dreams |
George, Unforunately Missouri has passed some laws to protect the commercial breeders. The State Senator in the SW part of the State has pushed this thru. Hunte Corp building a 100,000 sq ft facility has helped the ecomomy in that part of the state. Missouri as many other States look at dog breeding as a cash crop just like cattle, corn.... So plese don't take offense when someone like me mentiones Missouri. Missouri is just where Hunte Corp is located. Just put Hunte Corp in your search engine and read.........Kaye, Second Chance OES Rescue |
I'm not really sure what can be done about commercial breeders either, at least not in missouri. Their animal laws are so lax....
Laws need to be developed and passed that protect the animals, and future generations. There should be enforcement of laws on how many dogs one can have, and the care of them. They should enforce (somehow, how is another question) some ethical lines that should not be crossed, such as forcing health testing before being allowed to breed. Forcing people to wait til a dog is a certain age, whatever is appropriate to their breed. Educate people NOT to buy puppies from these places, or pet stores. |
George,
Since you are from MO, have you heard of Noah's Ark Breeders, or something to that extent? |
I've not heard of Noah's Ark Breeders;...Hmm if they're from MO and true to their name... they'll probably take two of anything and breed it. When searching for an OES Breeder last year I ran across one in northern Arkansas that advertised OES puppies, when I visited their web I discovered they bred a half dozen different dog breeds.
NO I'm not offended by comments about the MO reputation. Missouri is comprised of a duke's mixture of socio-economic classes and values - Urban (St. L. and KC) versus rural Ozarks as different in thinking on some things as night / day. Unfortunately most of the political power is in the rural areas. Not offended, just embarrased. My recommendation to anyone dealing with breeders anywhere is "get referrals", and either visit the site or talk to someone who knows the breeder's operations. |
Thanks for responding George. My Barney came from Noah's Ark, so that's why I was asking. I rescued him from a woman in California, who had bought him from a pet store who had bought him from Noah's Ark...I hadn't been able to find any info on the breeders, so I was just hoping that maybe you'd heard of them... |
Shug,
I understand what you are saying and while rescues have always been part of my life I also see the importance of reputable breeders. First Big Dog, then Shaggy, Merlin and Panda and 3 others of various breeds were adopted by me. Merlin is the only one purchased from a breeder as a pup. I will probably never get another pup, although I too experienced what that young girl did..the euphoria of getting a puppy for the first time since age 10. Previous to that, the only animals that walked through my doors were elderly, abused and sickly ones. I've adopted over 30 of those from shelters (aprox 2o some odd cats, 6 dogs and other small creatures.) Reputable breeders are so important for the breed and done right produce litter free of defects and behavior problems. (granted sometimes things inexplicably happen which is not the fault of the breeder.) I did all the right things when trying to find a pup. Contacting the AKC and sheepie clubs asking for their opinion and names of breeders they would recommend. Contacting them and going over interview process..impressed with the one that interviewed me more as a good potential mom and finally bringing home my boy. That's why a forum like this is so important to educate those that may not realize what happens when you don't research or purchase pups from a shop. Education is the key in many cases to stop horrible puppy mills. Panda, on the other hand was rescued from a puppy mill in Hong Kong and Blue was adopted by me at a shelter. I have so much admiration for you Shug, I want to do what you are doing - providing a forever home to aged sheepies. That is my dream. I am currently in the process of that pursuit this week. Crossing my fingers that the home with all the potential...three acres and affordable in my price range is still available. (They have had a bid on it already). :O( The agent informed me if their finances don't go through by Nov 14..they will agree to my offer. I'm praying (feel mean about this but it's for the sheepies - that the others offer falls through) and I'm closer to my dream. sorry kinda rambled and went off topic. Cheers to you Shug for all the good work you do. Marianne and the boys |
I have also shut down a puppy mill. When i adopted jagger my 3yr old collie,I had no clue what i was in for in the few days i had him.I did not go too the place he was,I meet the people 1/2way since it was 3hrs away.I know now big mistake. When I layed my eyes on him he looked so sad and I knew I just had too take ihm home.Long story short Jagger had a front leg that was broken and never fixed his growth plate too be exact,he had a bladder infection so severe if i had not taken him in he would have died in a matter of days, too top it off he had every worm a dog can have.My vet had said "this dog is more than unsellable".I worked w/ him and the police in the town these "breeders" lived.About 2weeks after I adopted Jagger I and my vet went to the puppymill and what I saw was so disgusting.Jaggers mother was filthy big dirt balls in her fur.Puppies just skinny, laying in the mud it was October so it was cold outside. All the pups where covered w/ feces, their eyes were all gooie,I could go on.Another long story short,we ended up shutting them down they had a 3grand fine, and was ordered too never own another animal.Puppymillers are nothing but pure evil.I still feel im very lucky too have Jagger,he is such a lover baby!!We have had him for 3yrs,and in that time he has grown into a true gentleman.Sadly tho he still has some issues, and IM sure its from his days at that hell whole.Like he is so scared of stairs still,he gets nervous when he walks up or down, but w/ tons of love he gets through it.He is such a beautiful animal. Now for his leg,the vet said we could have done surgery that costed 2,500.00 w/ no guarnatee it wouldnt give him trouble,or wait.So far its been fine. The winter tho can be rough on him if he is outside playing he limps a bit,but I bring him in and put a heating pad on it,and massage it for him and that works for him.If I had known where he came form would I ahve still bought him?I sure would have, and NOT too help the puppymillers, but too take him out of the hell he was in.Im really glad i had an awesome vet who knew right away where this beautiful collie came from. |
I really Hate having to be a WET BLANKET!!!!!!!! I wish I could just jump up and down for Joy when someone gets a new Baby. I've been in this BUSINESS long enough I know where THE BONES ARE BURIED!!!!!!!!I am to the point I don't want to know where the Baby came from...... I have seen so many unhealthy Babies produced.....I have seen breeeders pumping out deaf Babies over and over...I have seen so many unsolialized Babies flown out at 6 weeks old....I have seen people Hearts Broken!!!I have been disapointed so many times by what I thought was a responsible breeder.. They were only telling me what I wanted to hear. Telling me they were doing the right things [ testing, socializating, health guarantee, clean lines }thinking I would or could send people looking for a puppy their way...... People call me and I talk to them and give them the QUESTIONS to ask the breeder.........I tell them that PEOPLE LIE and to not believe everything they are told...I give them the tools to check these breeders out........ It is an impulse thing.....SHEEPIE FEVER!!!!!!!!! I want one and I have to have it right now thing......... Later I get the calls that the puppy they got isn't right.......Then I say " What does the breeder say?". Most of the time the breeder will not return the email or phone call....By then they have bonded with the sick Baby and will go any lenght to save it.... . I Hate this..I really do.........I think one time in everyones life they need to be owned by a Sheepie Baby.......... There is nothing like them........It just scaares me to death when someone says they are getting a New Puppy............Sheepie Hugs, Kaye |
Something I would reccommend to those breeders that want to step up to the plate is...........I had a group on Yahoo for the Parents of My Babies and the New Parents waiting to get a Baby....It is easy to start a group on Yahoo. Believe me if you { breeder} have anything to hide you don't want your Parents in contact with each other....... I required waiting Parents to join the group.......Sometimes things would come out in a grou discussion and I would change my mind on that person getting one of My Babies.....So the road went both ways...... Everything was discusssed!!!!! Every health problem......I don't think I could ever be accused of not being OPEN with the Parents....Sometimes even to Open. Sometimes I would say to myself " Do they really need to know this'? Because you can be so open it is like....OMG maybe there is something worng with My Baby......... Anyway, It is a terrific support system.....People that have siblings from the same litter stay in touch with each other....Send pictures of their Babies....THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING!!!!!!! Only those Parents that had one of My Babies for years could attest to the quality and desposition of The Babies....... It makes it much easier for the breeder to stay in touch in touch with Their Parents too......Again I would suggest any RESPONSIBLE BREEDER doing this..........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye |
One more comment and I'm off { I know I'm off }...... As a breeder I made mistakes.....I had health problems with Babies..... I lost Babies...I think any breeder that has never problems ..has just starting breeding or damned Lucky.........But, I did step up to the plate and looked at what I could change or what I could have done differently......Anytime you are dealing with a Live Creature anything can happen........ But, You Have To Step Up To The Plate as hard as that is sometimes........Sometimes I just wanted to go and crawl in a hole and hide out for a few days.......Kaye |
