HAIR LENGTH GENETICS ??
Does anyone know the genetics of the Old English Sheepdog with regards to dominance regarding hair length? 
Specifically, if an OES were bred with a short-haired dog, would the puppies be long-haired? Short-haired? Or would the litter be a mixture with some long-haired & some short-haired? Please either reply to this post, or drop me an email through the board. Thanks, Christine |

| Well, from what I learned from taking past genetics courses and if this is a textbook case, then I would have to say that you have a 50-50 chance of getting both. if it were 2 long haired then you would have long haired pups if it were short haireds then you would get short haired pups but since its half and half, If gonna say 50-50 chance. If you know the coats of the mother and father you could even be getting into a 1/4 chance of each but that would depend on the parents and you could then see what hair type is dominant in your dog gene pool. Its complex and you never really know what to get and sometimes the science is wrong too. Thats just my thoughts on it . |
| Genes do mix half and half, but what you get (genotype) is not always what you see (phenotype)
Add that to the fact that if the bitch releases a number of eggs, not all eggs will be fertilized, and of the eggs that are fertilized, not all will implant, and of the ones that do implant some may be re absorbed. |
