sleeping outside in the cold

Hi. This is not really a housebreaking issue - just didn't know which thread this post should be in.

It's getting very cold in Rochester, NY lately and will be London's first winter. He seems to enjoy sleeping/laying out in the balcony of our bedroom and outside. How long can an oes stay outside in the cold without getting sick? know any ideas? suggestions?

thanks:)

Hi , first off I would be afraid that he might try to get over the railing during the night and fall since you can't hear what he is doing. No I would not leave my OES's out at night in cold weather. I also live near you and out weather gets to cold for them. This is just me. I am sure others have ideas that can help.
My OES loved to sleep outside as well. She never was on a balcony but in a fenced in yard and stuff and she would refuse to come inside at night so we just left her out there but I live in California so we don't get as cold I think but at times it has gone to 50 degrees on some nights, she she always would come inside on her own when she was too cold. It meant always leaving the patio window open and us freezing to death but she was perfectly happy. I dont know how cold it gets there but I honestly wouldn't leave them outside unless they had a good enclosed shelter to go into with warm blankets but I would leave a way for them to get back inside ( doggy door possibility?)
I didnt mean about leaving him outside overnight - definately NOT!! but i was speaking of during the day - in the afternoon? I keeping bringing him inside every 15 minutes but he'd go back to the door and whine so he can go outside again. grr

hmm, my doors are made out of glass - so doggy door is not an option :(

so how long is too long?
well if its just during the day then i would say let him be outside when he wants. If it gets too cold theyll tell you. as long as you are sure that they can't jump over the fence... thats just something to be careful with. If you can leave the glass door open then he can decide on his own where he wants to be but if it makes your house too cold then you could get a doggy door. They have the kind that you put on the side of your glass door and they go all the way to the top of the door but the doggy portion is on the bottom. Its like an extra piece of door. They come in all sizes but are a bit expensive. That could be an alternative, check petco.com , I believe they have the ones I mean but doggy doors aren't for everyone so up to you.
I'd just keep an eye on him when it gets colder. Right now, he's fine and both of mine are the same way. We can't keep them in the house! Luckily, the dog door lets them make their own decision when they're too cold.

Check eBay for the sliding glass type doggy doors. We've been looking into buying one for James's mom's dog but now she got a new job that will allow her to be home more so she doesn't need it. They really aren't too expensive and, for us, nothing beats the convenience.

Dogs don't catch colds from being outside in the cold. What they can get is hypothermia (sp) and frostbite, but it doesn't sound like he would be out long enough for that. He'll let you know when it is too cold. But watch for him licking any metal out there!
yeah - my balcony is cemeted - there's no holes or any ways for london to get out - he seems ot like to sleep out in the balcony upstairs than downstairs. o well, im usually upstairs anyway :)

the pet door idea is great!!! ive never heard of it so im looking into it. thanks for the help guys. :D
30F or 0C is a temperature ours can stand during the day easily, as long as they don't get wet and have a bed to sleep in. They even refuse to stay inside, I guess being full coated helps a lot.

We've never let them sleep outside because we don't have a doggie door in case they get too cold, but I bet you they'll be happy to sleep in the cold if there's no wind.
This is Panda's weather...its in the low 80's during the day and I cant get her to come inside to keep me company....and at night she pushes the screen door open and lays on the covered patio...she'll come in to check on us, but she likes it better outside....night temp is around 60...perfect outdoor sheepie sleeping weather.
darcy you have the great weather, I live in londons area we get down to 19 below and lots of snow. winds are also high. not a good place to let your OES out for long times
but if its a sunny day I let them out to play and make dogie angels in the snow. this is just me. I have had 3 OES now and mine are not cold likers.
I guess it depends on the dog. :?
I too live in the NorthEast and its been very chilly lately. Bogart loves the outdoors and often teases several times to go out and do the sheepie 500 in the cold winter air. My husband and I can't help but laugh!
General rule of thumb is that whatever length of time it takes for YOU to get uncomfortably cold, then that would be the same for your dog. A shorthaired dog would be minutes, akin to you going out in a t shirt and underwear only. A full coated oes is more like going out with a good coat on, but still, you WILL get cold.
