In the latest AKC magazine there is an article about the Prunus family of plants (Pears, plums, apples and apricots) contain significant amounts of cyanide. Yikes. |
yup very big yikes. I just posted a list of I don;t know how mant toxic plants. Always a good thing to keep that nearby just in case |
I'm really worried about my puppy. She is always putting things in her mouth and i am constantly stopping her. Today however i noticed that she smelled of lavender after she came in. I haven't read anywhere that it is poisonous but tonight she has been sick a lot to the point of bile. I have put her water out (its 0120hrs now) which i had taken away before her bed, because i don't want her to get dehydrated.
She is not crying or shaking or even any different to usual and i feel better that she has actually brought everything up. A little bit disgusting but i went through her sick and found 2 tiny stones, bits of dirt and pieces of grass. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused it - the stones maybe? She is always eating grass and dirt. I can't believe she eats stones. I had to make her cough up a slug the other day - she's crazy! I feel really guilty that i have missed something and it's made her ill. I'm hoping that when i start taking her out (allowed out tomorow) she won't feel the need to go so mad in the garden. |
She might be a little bored as you suggested but its probably jsut a puppy thing. You just have to watch em all the time. If you look further down the list of topics under medical and nutrition, I posted lists of toxic plants as well as non toxic plants and other things. Good idea to print them out and have em handy especially with puppies. Sounds like the stones probably gave her an upset tummy. How long ago did she eat that slug? My OES was sick a day or two after she ate a slug so that could be it. If its something that just isnt sitting right with her body, then the body will get rid of it which Im sure it most likely was. |
She ate the slug nearly a week ago. The trouble is if i leave her alone in the garden for 10 minutes - she can be quietly wandering around, sitting down etc and then the next minute madly eating everything in sight - it really is exhausting! I've been letting her have a little time in the garden though because she has been desperate to run and sniff around. I'll have to trail around after her again, bring on the wanders up the street so the garden can be the toilet again!
Thanks for doing the list for the forum - it's useful to have. |
Welcome to puppyhood At least your puppers isnt interested in hoses, hose bibs, screen door mesh, barbque knobs, sprinklers, oh and the turtle....lol....Puppies are the best, but I have to say that Im very happy that Panda is beyond all that (knock on wood).....Now lets talk about puppy nipping....thats a whole other story |

Bailey ate rock gravel for about 6 months. He was sneaky about it but we knew because we coud see it after it had been "processed". There was no way to stop him (our whole property is desert landscaped - all rock gravel!). At some point I had to put it in God's hands and accept the fact that he was either going to outgrow it or it would land him in the hospital. Fortunately he seems to have gotten over it. |
Well that's reassuring hopefully she will outgrow it. We can't avoid the stones eaither, it's a military property and the whole of the back wall is made with mini stones on the surface (fashionable in about 1970!).
Molly was fine after that night - although very hungry! My husband has had dogs before (we met) and i think he's right in that i worry too much. She hasn't eaten any stones since that night....maybe because we're out more now. The walks aren't the joy i imagined though - she's terrified of everything from a man about a mile away and children up the street or a dog behind a fence! |

Well, my first sheepie died from eating stones. She'd get bored or I'd be late with dinner. One time I was real late with dinner....... Though the vet med hospital was a mile away and she was in surgery within a hour, she died 2 days later. That was 28 years ago and I still grieve. Puppies learn the world through their nose and mouth.........one has to be on their toes with a curious little whelp. |
I'm sorry about your dog. You're right to caution me though. I try and watch her as much as possible and i hope that she has linked the feast she had in the garden that night with being ill. |
