Hi. Thanks for the assistance. I actually do have a medical question that is kind of gross. I'm sure you deal with this all of the time. Question is..why do some dogs have clogged anal glands and others don't? All of the female dogs I've had, including Annie, need to get these expressed every few months. What causes this and is it more prevalent in females? Thank you for your insight. |
A healthy dog with normal bowel movements shouldn't have to have it done at all. A normal firm stool will keep them naturally cleaned out.
If this is a problem perhaps you should try a higher protien food with less filler so the stools are smaller and firmer. Small breeds often need this done regardless, but an oes shouldn't. |
Annie appears to have a healthy poop 1-2 times a day. She has been eating Nutros Senior dog food now for about a year. It has done wonders for her breath at least. Not sure what else to do about the anals. |
Oh well as an elder dog that's more understandable.... |
some dogs are just more prone to getting anal gland issues than others. You can have them surgically removed if it gets really bad but ususally what happens is that when they have a bowl movement, the pressure squeezes then out with some animals it doesnt always happen and thye have to have it done for them. I dont know if you have hers done by the vet but I can tell you how you can do it yourself if you want. But genereally its just a thing that occurs. |
Thanks for your adivce! I'll leave it up to the vet to do it. We watched them do it once and decided it wasn't something we'd feel comfortable with. It doesn't seem to be very pleasant |
Some dogs mind having it done while others just seem to not care except for the fact that someone is sticking a finger in their butt. Its a bit messy and stinky too but other than that it depends on the dog. If the anal glands do really become a problem I would look at other options but usually these things arent too much of an issue. |
