Sheepie habits

I've noticed with all the sheepies I have had that they all loved to sleep on their backs against a wall. They also love laying aginst people or under table and such. Has anyone else had the same experience? Is it a breed thing or what? I also have noticed and heard from others that they are prone to ear infections. I know my last one had a lot of problems with that and had to have several surgeries. anyone else have the same prob? My last OES was also extremely excited about car rides and hated the rain, my moms OES is the same way and he is only 7 months. What other habits has everyone noticed with their Sheepies? I'd love to find out if its a breed thing or just a common habit.

Hi Nina
Welcome to the forum.
Mojo is nine months and he loves to sleep on his back or any tight spot he can get into. One of his favorites is under a kitchen chair. Problem is he forgets to come out from underneath before he stands up! He loves to go anywhere. He leans on everybody and usually sits on their feet. He'll put his paw on your lap to get your attention and then does a slow bear roll down to the floor.
There are so many characteristics they share.
Oh ya, did I mention clown!
If you click on my camera, you can see Panda loves to sleep upside down against the wall. She follows me around everywhere and love to lick. She has a wookie talk and is very vocal. She has to suck on her baby to fall asleep. And the best is that she looks at me adoringly,
Yup thats the upside down sleeping posture I know. It's so funny how they all seem to love doing that. They are all so cute!!!
Bosley sleeps on his back, but twisted over to one side so he looks like his body is attached to him sideways. He gets excited for car rides because that means dog park, and we have just found that he does not like the rain at all. We put him our for his pee time, and leave the door open to the garage so he can come in out of the weather when he is done. Well forget that! He will now just wait until we leave him, then come back and pee in the garage!

Chum is positively nuts about the car. If she even thinks that she might get to go in the car, she gets so excited and starts bouncing around and pulling on her leash. Once "car" gets into her head, she desperately trys to get into *any* car -- I've have to drag her away if someone happens to open a car door when she's in this mode. Otherwise, she is really good on the leash. It is a total aberration. She doesn't mind rain. We go for long walks in the rain. She loves to be towel-dried afterwards.
valerie,
My OES loved the towel drying too but still hated the rain. She would hold going to the bathroom for sometimes an entire day until the rain stopped and she wouldn't go out unless I forced her to. Then she would be mad at me but when I brought out the towel she was happy again and ok with it. Sammy my mom's OES just sits at the door's edge and looks outside but won't go. When my mom makes him go he wanders over to hsi area but squishes himself up against the wall as tight as possible so he doesn't get dripped on.
and I thought it was just my dog - Ollie sleeps on his back, front legs up and back legs down and like Mojo, he sleeps under the kitchen chair, although last night I had to get the chair out so he could get up :P

When I'm in the kitchen he lays right next to my feet, I litteraly can't move which is difficult, but I always manage to stretch to get things - hey who's the boss here me or him ??
I also mean't to say about the ears - Ollie has had an ear infection and has had drops, but the vet did say you must pluck the hair near the ear canel regularly - the breeder showed me how to do it, but I can't, my husband has too and I brush his ears daily, as in ear flat and brush the hair towards the outside of the ear, it really does help - will also save on the vets bills too
Barney loves to sleep upside down, usually against our stainless steel trash can in the kitchen. Maybe it's cool on his skin? So far none of my OES have had ear problems...
Oh, and last night after we had gone to bed, Barney was quietly 'bocking' to himself...the noise that he makes that sounds like the bocking of a chicken...Bock, bock, bock...
Oh, and he doesn't like to go out into the rain, but once he's there he's fine...But still doesn't like to step on wet grass...
LOVES the car...
On summer, Lennon and Sofa sleep with their backs against the floor, thye look funny upside down. Both have tight spots of their choice to sleep or hang out when there's not much to do.

In winter they do the same thing after too much activity, but if it's cold outside, they look for places where the heat from the furnance can be felt.
Car rides? Barney and Maggie both love them; course with a standard cab PU only one can ride in the front; since Maggie is the jumper, she rides in the truck bed with the camper shell. Of course when I leave either in the front seat; the immediately sit at the driver's side till I return. And when the wipers are on they go nuts. They both quickly learned that when I get in they must sit or lie down so I can see out the rear view mirror on the passenger side.

Outside, Maggie is the barker; Barney rarely barks. Maggie thinks she's the boss, though Barney is bigger.

Of course the "matt fairy" is always on hand if they are not groomed regularly.

I think if we all catalogued all the peculiar, lovable antics of these dogs, the forum would run out of space. :D
EARS!!! Infections, yes. My recently departed Shadow had them from around a year or so old. They finally took her hearing. Not a doc so can't explain it, just know it went from bad to worse to deaf. And, the infections were still abundant even after that. By the time surgery was suggested I was told she was probably too old to survive it. That was years ago. She/we fought those stupid infections off and on for about 14 years. My advise, keep the ears very very clean, dry, and aired out. This means cutting the hair under the ear to allow the air to flow under the ear flap. I've also been told to be careful of pulling the hair out of the flaps that that can cause infections???

Had one female, Laci that when we went out in the yard to play or to play with her puppies, if there was any poopy around she would make sure she went around it went fetching the ball. Talk about "clean" feet. All mine hated going out in the rain, some had to be pushed out. lol Thunder, look out if you were between them and an open door. Best weather forecasters in the world. They should hire them to do the weather on tv.
Yea my last sheepie, Bobo, she has bad ear infections from really young too. She used to itch and itch and then flap hear head and so she caused herself to get ear hematomas and so they had to be lanced open and then she went to surgery like 7 times so that they could close the blood vessels. It got to a point where one ear had just come out of surgery and the other would have a hematoma so she had to go back in. We even had the vet tell us that we should just go into surgery and staples her ears so that the vessels couldnt burst anymore. She had so much scare tissue forming in the ear flaps that by the end of it all there just wasnt any room for hematomas to form. Luckily she never went deaf from it but Im sure that deafness isn't a rare occurance from ear problems in this breed either. MY moms OES, Sammy, had his first ear infection at 12 weeks old, we had just gotten him. He came from a puppy mill in europe and he had such bad kennel cough that it had turned into bronchitis and had a bad ear infection and we picked him cause helooked the healthiest out of the three that were there ( him and his two sisters). OEs are so lovable but have so many health problems unfortunately, I guess some people are really lucky if their OES has had few problems but we still love em anyway.
Sheepie Traits;
My sheepie loves the rain, lays out in it, runs in it, whatever.
As far the ears, I've always cleansed them with "Octiclens" which you can buy at the Vet. I use it whenever the ears smell dirty and I pull the hair out from the ear canal with hemostats I purchased from Dr. Foster-Smith. He likes to be a lap dog (80 pounder) ugh- especially when I'm on the phone. Lays or sits with a paw on my feet. Sleeps against me in bed. Howls like a big dog. Runs and tries to hide when he hears loud noises (big baby), but barks like he means it when he hears a knock (tee, hee). Loves car rides but barks insanely until we get moving. Deliberately smiles at times and always greets me by wiggling his entire hindquarters when I get home. This one I hate! Wipes his mouth on the couch or the wall.

That one I could live with. The one I hated was being used as a human napkin after a long cold drink at the water bowl during the summer months - "while wearing shorts."
