Im so scared to move to a cold state. I just called my friend in Alaska, and she said it was too cold to go on a walk. We're both from TX (she's only been there for 5 wks), so we only have a few long-sleeve type stuff. Not to mention we are both 7 1/2 months pregnant and can't find winter clothes. Alaska: Today's high was in the 60, but it's supposed to be 32 (high) this weekend. TX: Today's high is 90, and it's supposed to be 88 this weekend. |
|
Here in Northern MI it was 32 this morning with heavy winds off Lake MI and rain A long and cold winter is almost upon us. |
Leanne, Can you go shopping before you move, just to get some basics? Even in phx, they sell hats scarves gloves and coats....think warm sweaters....Im sure pea in the pod has some nice winter maternity clothes..Id recommend lands ends' flannel jeans...I wear mine a lot in the winter....wool socks..got those as costco...or go to a web site thats for hunters....orvis.com ...I also understand that the more pregnant you are the hotter you get...can anyone atest to that? It wont be bad...just find stuff to layer.... |
I'm 6' with a very small butt. Maternity pants are the devil with me, lol We've gone to every store here in Austin (pretty much have everything) and the pants are either too big (their maternity small is too big on me) or they're riding like I'm hanging in the ghetto. Thankfully the sweaters I can grab from anywhere. It's just important I stay warm because of my Raynaud's I was telling everyone about (can't be in weather below 70 w/o getting frostbite like symptoms and arthritis-type pain). I do have Mr. J's North Face jacket. They didn't have any in my size each time we've gone to look. I have 1 pair of pajama pants and 1 pair of sweats that fit me. |
Leanne, try LL Bean or Lands End, they have lots of warm stuff. Maybe you could get a flannel lined wool cape if you can't find a coat. Hunting gear was a good idea, they sell hand and feet warmers. |
Leanne, another idea for you, since you are so tall, is the men or boys dept....in a slender.....
Did you ever think having a models body would be so hard to find clothes..lol...????? |
I live in Pa. It was in the high 70's here today.Absolutely gorgeous out. Tomorrow its supposed to drop down in the fifties. Your lucky your pregnant and have no butt. I have a J-Lo butt to start with and when I was pregnant I gained about 35lbs even my maternity clothes didn't fit near the end. What if you bought bigger pants than you normally wear but not maternity ones . My daughters friend did that and it worked. She just bought regular Lei jeans with the lower waist in a bigger size. Those heat sticks the hunters use in their socks and gloves are nice to have. I fell bad for you . I'm not a fan of freezing either. |
32 and snowing here
Seriously, stock up, learn to dress in layers, never leave home without your mitts. |
it's snowing there? GOSH!!! So cold.
I guess my friend tried installing a fence 5 wks ago, and not one company would because they said the ground already froze over. Totally didn't make sense to me since it hasn't gotten too cold there yet. Anyways, her husband had to build it. |
It was just a few flakes last night.... now it's below freezing, but it's raining. Weird. |
You will acclimate to the colder temps, but probably not to the point where you think 0 degrees Fahrenheit is warm...
But you'll think that 60 is a heat wave! |
It was 32 here this morning, but it'll get up to 60s in the afternoon. Thats pretty typical for us in the fall- below freezing at night, mild during the day. We've definitely broken out the hot tea and cocoa. i love hot apple cider this time of year too!
Make sure to remember to buy nice thick SOFT (wool socks are warn but itchy) socks for walking around the house, they're a life saver on cold linoleum and tile! Lands End and Eddie Bauer are some of my favorites for comfy cold weather gear. Plus, in the winter Eddie Bauer has the NICEST leashes and collars for Yuki, umm.... NO, NO, I mean the nicest sweaters and mittens Don't forget to buy a couple nice scarves. My favorite scarf is a pashmina wrap- its super soft, wide, long and pretty to boot, so I can wrap my neck and my face and my ears all at once. If you feel like you want my "ULTIMATE COLD WEATHER BUNDLING" tips pm me, I'm happy to share. I hate being cold so I always bundle up. All my co-workers tease me about being so bundled, but I'm always warm, even when it is ridiculously cold out!!! Good luck with your move to colder climates Karen |
Yesterday was real nice in the NE USA. It was about 70, but felt a little cooler because of the breeze. I've noticed that the temperature-taker in my car has been reading in the high 40s/low 50s in the mornings as I go to work. This is good weather for driving the Duds. He goes faster when it's cooler. Still nto a fan of the winter. If it stayed like this all winter, I'd be pretty satisfied. ~Katie. |
High 30's this a.m. but will be 70 for day here in New Mexico. Snowed in mtns. to north.
Can you get into tights? Long warm skirt w/ tights might work for you. Remember.........layers........... Consider silk long johns and camisoles. They do well under clothes plus keep you warm. Add a blouse then a sweather, you'll be fine. Learn to wear hats outside, keeps the heat in and looks cute. Wear socks with shoes, even two pair, silk and something else. Friend lived in Alaska for a few years, reports you will need to learn how to dress up like a snow bunny to go outside when temps really drop. Of course having a baby with you, you'll learn all about preheating the car, extra blankets in the car, etc. |
It's supposed to be in the upper 70s here in VA today (with lows in the low 50s) but a cold front is coming through so it should be in the low-mid 60s tomorrow...Can't WAIT for it to cool off...
Leanne, I'm from So Cal, so I have NO tips on cold weather, except that you will get weird looks (from experience!) when you wear flip flops in the snow... |
I guess I took for granted taking the dog out to pee in a t-shirt and boxers. I may just keep a dresser by the front door to make layering easier 4o'clock in the morning.
I'll be the Texan entering Alaska this upcoming Monday in TexasA&M flip flops and Mr. J's winter jacket. Oh, cat in one hand and maltese in the other. |
Oooh, Leanne, this is what you need...this type of coat keeps you SO warm... (I know, forget about the price, I'm just showing you a sample of a warm jacket...although, if you think about it, if you wear it all the time, the proce is worth it...)

The weather here in the Phoenix area is fantastic - this is what we survive the summers for! Highs in the high 80s during the day, lows in the high 50s at night. You can spend the day in shorts and a t-shirt then sleep with the windows open during the nice cool nights Mrs J, definitely look at LL Bean online. One year my friend from Houston came to Chicago for New Years, and her first reaction to the cold was "I always wondered who ordered all those turtlenecks in the LL Bean catalog"! And layers are a great suggestion. Good longjohns under your pants really help, and definitely good warm socks. If your feet are warm it makes a huge difference - learned the hard way from many years of walking to work in Chicago. |

That's so funny because I wrote my reply BEFORE I read yours (we were typing at the same time). I don't have time to go shopping anymore before we start traveling. I will try to go Friday morning to get a pair of sweats. If not, I still have a pair of small capris I could wear. I tore them last time I tried to squeeze in. lol Thankfully Mr. J won't be on the plane with me. He'd never let me get away with this. |
That's the jacket that my sister has. She wears it at the ice rink while her kids practice. It's like your own personal igloo. I doubt you could ever get cold in it. |
Barney, that price is totally not bad for a North Face jacket. Most are that price! I'll definitely be getting one as SOON as I get there. I just can't get one before I go (no time...I'm packing now and mr. j comes to drive us to Colorado tomorrow night). My mil's house looks horrible, so I have to have it cleaned before she comes back to it too!
I went to WalMart the other week to look for Long John's and none of them would fit. I couldn't deal with it showing my butt crack every time I bent over. I DEFINITELY want some. I will get my girlfriend to look online with me (LL Bean) once I convince her to let me use her computer in Alaska. Cold weather sucks. Why did I tell mr. J that we should choose Alaska because it would be a once in a lifetime experience! His parents and mine are mad we didn't choose TX!! (though that would have meant he would miss the birth of his first child b/c of iraq) Anyone know a good car rental company? Possibly one that picks up the car after you're finished with it? So what, I'm admitting I'm a baby, but I'm scared! Mr. J always JOKES that women, koreans (me), and really old people shouldn't be on the road. |
Leanne, please don't wear the flip flops! Even before you land in Alaska you'll be cold. It's a long flight and it tends to get cold on the plane when you're flying for a while. I always travel with a pair of warm socks in my carry-on. If I'm wearing sandals or dress shoes my feet tend to get cold and I'll put the socks on to stay warm. So, please buy yourself a pair of shoes, and if not make sure you have socks and slippers to wear on the plane and in the car when you get there
OOps forgot you're driving - bring the warm socks and slippers to wear in the car! |
no, we're only driving to Colorado. Then I get on the plane! Mr. J and his dad will be driving the rest of the way. Mr. J will not let yuki get on a plane (she's daddy's girl) and we could only ship 1 of our cars. |
Actually, Leanne, Bloomingdales is having an online sale until Oct 27 for 20% off of stuff, so you could get that coat for 20% cheaper! Could you buy it and ship it to AK? |
Have you tried www.oldnavy.com ? They now carry maternity clothes and aren't that expensive (wish they sold maternity clothes when I needed them!).
The weather in Florida is now in the high 80's and the humidity is higher than usual...also watching what Wilma is doing . Meg (forgot to log in) |
Yeah, that's where 80% of my maternity clothes are from. They're SUPER!!!!!!!!! But, they don't make pants for women w/my frame. Summer was easy because I didn't have to worry about length and they carry low-rise (good for my figure). But, as fall/winter approaches, not one pair of pants fit. I'm not even being picky. There was one design that fit, but I might as well go naked because they were paper thin (and that see-through type material). I even returned a few pairs that I ordered online. The more mainstream stores (specialize in maternity clothes) only carry "small" as their smallest size which is too big. We go out A LOT so I have gone out of my way to look for pants to wear.
I've finally come to realize that it's just going to be sweats from here on out. This is totally fine with me, but I'm sure it'll make an interesting outfit at church. |
You will do just fine. We lived in Alaska for 14 years, and I loved it, as did our dogs! Take along the few warm things that you have, and buy what you need when you arrive. The store there are stocked for the weather. The lifestyle in Alaska is different from that in the south. Just keep a positive attitude and look at it as an adventure and you will have a great time. |
Leanne,
It's been around 89 degrees here during the day and 60's at night. As far as maternity. I was a size 1 when I got pregnany with Hayley. I am 5'1" so all the pants were too long for me and too big in the butt. I found a wonderful used children's clothing store that also carried Maternity Clothes. I actually found size 1 maternity jeans... that fit in the butt and in length. So my suggestion is to look at used clothes.... I also wore a lot of maternity leggings that my mother in law bought for me at Kohls. They were a lot more comfortable than jeans anyway. I won't even tell you what size am I now I only gained 20 lbs during the pregnancy and have only lost 10.... Now I have a J lo butt Elissa |
Just a quick note on the winter coat- long ones are super nice for going to work/dressy outfits. But if you're taking baby or pupsters out for walks, consider getting a "parka" type coat, with a hood to go over your head. Hoods with "fluffly" (fux fur or real, either works, I prefer faux!) on the outside rim will help cut the wind from getting to your face, and the hood itself will keep the wind off of your neck. Plus hoods are generally big enough to go over any hat/scark/earmuff combos you might have going on. I actually have 6 coats for our various weathers (and I wanna get 2 more, I really need a trench coat for the rain, and I wanna get a new hooded parka). I love fluffy lined cold weather gear- I have fluffy(faux fur) lined boots, mittens, hat and coat for those really wretchedly cold days. You'll be fine!!! I promise, you learn fast how to dress apropriately for the different temps. |
I realize you probably have this all figured out by now, but just my
2 cents worth... I have a grey wool cape with a hood that I just love for when it is really cold. It is very heavy, but well worth the weight when it gets really cold, cause nothing I have ever owned has been this warm. It is very long, almost to my ankles (but I am very short too ) and it really keeps me toasty from head to toe, even with high winds. I would recommend it to anyone - I absolutely love mine. It seems like it isn't as confining as the bulky parkas I've had, but that's just me. Just a thought... Shellie |

31 degree F this morning brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, the frost is on the pumpkin!!!! |
Brrr.. that sounds soo cold. |
Ahh....Fall.....my favorite....usually sunny and not too hot. Last night I finally pulled up the covers and "hibernated". Was tough to get out of bed this morning, and Pooh agreed....he preferes it to be "chilly"...
Today, a high of 58. |

Typical MS weather, we'll be in the 90s next week, have an ice storm the next week, and be in shorts the day after the ice storm! lol I'm sure most Southerners can relate. |
Well, Mr J should be arriving in a few hours, so see y'all sometime after I have a jacket. I went to visit my mom today about an hour away and you'd think she was never going to see me again. This will basically be an overseas assignment for 3 years even though it's stateside (military also treats it like an overseas assignment). I hate when mom's do that because it makes it so difficult to leave. Gee mom, you'll see me in January when I have the kiddo!!!! Anyways, we went to old navy, motherhood, and jcpenny and couldn't find any pants so I got some sweats from ny&co.
At least I'm leaving home (TX) with our favorite summer friend: My shoe won't fit because I got bit by fire ants. haha i'm really allergic. Like clockwork (must happen at least once every summer). I'm sure those who live in places notorious for them (ant hill every few feet) can relate. But the great (and sick) thing is now I get to pop them all. They leave the biggest pimple looking things. |
I had to scrape ice off my car this morning for the first time this year... I wish it would just snow already! LOL
It's mucky and muddy. Here is a link to our weather currently and over the next few days... looks cold, but NO SNOW! lol http://theweathernetwork.com/weather/ci ... ON0376.htm |
Sorry guys, but I need to replenish my sunscreen supply... |
It is once again raining here. I fell like I'm back in Seatle. Grrr |
