They passed their Canine Good Citizen tests this morning. It's only been 4 months since I rescued Maggie; she has become a real sweetheart. The evaluator was conducting an agility class for about 10 dogs prior to the test and invited us to watch the tests. During the class she introduced Barney to running through a tunnel. After the third run through he wanted to run through all the tunnels in the ring. What a ham. After the conclusion of the class, Barney and Maggie joined two other dogs from the agility class for the CGC tests. I just finished building them a grooming table and they had their first grooming on it this morning before the tests. It's got a thick rubber pad on top and they almost went to sleep while I was combing them. |

Wow, what achievements for them! Congrats. |
Good job Barney and Maggie!!!! |
Congratulations to Barney and Maggie, and of course to their excellent trainer
CGC is a goal of mine for Bailey. He gets so excited in public so I'm really looking forward to our next obedience class where the training is focussed on public behavior and "distractions". |

Valerie asks: Quote: What did you do to prepare them for the test?
I think working one on one with a trainer and consistently practicing everyday for 15 min, sometimes twice a day. I would work one on one with Maggie and the trainer on Tuesdays, then go through the same thing with Barney. Barney was in a beginner obedience class with about a dozen dogs when he was 5 months, but in a class that size the instructor can't teach you the subtle signals your dog gives you when he's about to ignore you. The quicker you make a correction the more effective it is. We used a regular check chain collar throughout, up to Tuesday of this week. For some reason, last week Maggie seemed to completely forget the meaning of "stay" and Barney forgot the meaning of "down" - in spite of the fact that Tuesday of last week they performed impecably in a trial run of the tests. So Tuesday we reinforced the two commands with a pinch collar. Wednesday and this morning I went back to the check collar. What I found to be unique with the trainer was the use of touch and voice to reward good behavior, rather than treats. I think I was saying "good Barney", "good Maggie" in my sleep. Our next challenge will be to work toward challenging the CD title. |
Yee doggies!
