Stolen Old English Sheepdog

My OES was seen being stolen in Albuquerque NM last weekend when we were there visiting family. Does anyone out there know what people are doing with sheepdogs that are stolen? Are they trying to sell them?

Our story has been on the front page of the ABQ paper and in the news because we got "Summit" last year for my son who had a brain tumor removed. My son is doing great and the dog has been a huge part of the healing process for all of us. We haven't had any good leads at this point and are heart broken.
Does anyone know of a site that I can go to other than Fido Finders, etc...
HELP !! We Miss our big baby so bad !
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
How horrible... I am so very sorry about Summit being stolen. Here's the link to your Fido Finder's page so others here can see him- http://www.fidofinder.com/dog.php?id=16 ... erque%20NM .

Have you had any flyers made to take or mail to vets, groomers or shelters in the surrounding cities? If he's been neutered it seems it will be a plus because he can't be used for breeding.

Could you contact any of the OES rescues to request a picture be placed on their websites and also on PetFinder? Sometimes the general public searching for a sheepie may run across listings in their area for sheepies for sale.

I'm sorry I'm not of much help. I hope he's returned to you real soon.
Jaclin
Hi Again-
Here are a few links that might help a little...

You can go to PetFinder and post a classified ad for a lost pet-
http://www.petfinder.com/post/classifiedhop.html

Pets911 has a place to post lost pets-
http://www.pets911.com/services/lostandfound/index.php

If you visit the following address you will find additional places to post - http://www.petwork.com/petwork_lost_and_found.html
I don't have any advice...just a lot of hope that you find your sheepie!

How horrible! I cannot believe that this happened! My guys are getting extra hugs today!
I'm so sorry this has happened to you! I hope you find him soon!!
Me too hope you find your OES soon and get the people that did this.

hope this does not make your son sicker. Good luck and let us know if you get him back!!!!
What a terrible thing to do  I hope you get him back quickly.
That's just horrible. My sister lives in Santa Fe and she is distraught because an elderly woman was forced to live her mini-poodle outside of the local post office and when she came out, the dog was gone. :( My sister has posted a reward for this lady's dog. I can't imagine how awful it must've been to have your dog stolen. What a mean lesson for your son. I hope you find him soon. . .
My experience has been that people steal dogs for 2 reasons. Either they see the dog and think that no one wants it and they take it home or they take it to sell it.......Keep on checking Petfinder for one in NM, Arizonia, Nevada, Colorado, Calirornia and Texas. I found out recently that anyone can go on as a GUEST on Petfinder and list a dog...Check classified newpaper ads for OES in all the major cities..Check Puppyfind.com They sell adult dogs on ther also. These people can come up with AKC papers if they want to off the internet.....Money usually talks...There are a lot of BOTTOM FEEDERS OUT THERE!!!!!!! .Doesn't Susan in Albequerque belong to this group? Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
Was the dog tatooed, microchipped...put out alerts to all the vets, shelters, newspaper...anything identifiable...if someone unitentionally buys this dog, and goes for routine shots etc they will get a red flag in the system.

Good luck I hope someone turns him in or the people in to the police.
Any update on Summit?
:( Still no go leads on Summit. We are so sad !
I have gotten in touch with Susan in NM who used to do the OES rescue. There is no longer a rescue service there for sheepdogs.
Please keep sending good wishes our way...Friday will be 2 weeks.
I'm so sorry, I can't even imagine what you're feeling :( Don't give up hope.
Any update?
Still no Summit. You can see our story on the TX OES rescue webpage.
Everyone has been so nice!
Please keep sending good thoughts our way...we aren't giving up!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that you will find Summit.

Tanya
Don't give up hope. Hamlet was doggynapped 3 years back (we'd just left for vacation and he was staying with a house sitter.) After a whole month of posting signs, ads in the newspaper, and checking with local vets and the animal shelters, a friend saw him laying in a driveway with another dog, about 2 miles from our house! My husband and I went over and said, "We understand you found our dog." And the guy said he'd picked him up as a stray and didn't want to contact the animal shelters because he was afraid Hamlet would be taken in and not claimed. (All the guy had to do was read the lost ads in the paper, call any of the shelters - they had the report, or check with any local vet.) We offered him a reward and he refused it, and we took our baby dog home. We were so happy.

I am praying that Summit finds her way home. Don't give up hope.

By the way, Hamlet is microchipped, but it didn't matter, because the person that had him didn't want to find us. But we got him back anyways, because there are DOGGY ANGELS. I hope that your little boy is well and that the angels bring Summit home soon.

Please keep us posted.

Big Fluffy HUGS
I am so very sorry to hear about your stolen sheepie!! What a terrible thing to have happen. Two weeks is a very long time. But don't lose hope, he may be out there trying to find his way home.
I just realized you are from Colorado............... have you sent your story to 9 News here? I have been checking all of the onsite shelters here in CO and haven't seen anything -- have you contacted Betty with the CO OESR?
What an awful story. I hope you find him.

One good thing the breed is large. Hard for people to miss.
We have decided to buy a new sheepdog and placed a deposit for a pup in Montana. We are buying him from the Loehrs. We are still hoping and praying that we get Summit back and have always wanted two of them. We miss our baby very much.
Hold your breath folks.........Summit may have been found in Juarez. The people who "took" him may have thought he was a stray (yeah right). The hard part is yet to come......getting him released and getting him back home to Colorado.
Oh, what a WONDERFUL Christmas present this would be!!! I'll keep praying for Summit, and keeping all fingers/toes/paws (Drez, of course!) crossed. Hoping to hear good news soon!!
Chris
That would be such wonderful news!!

All fingers, toes & Paws crossed here too!! :D
Oh that is great news! Please keep us informed as to the progress of getting Summit reunited with his family.
WOW!!! That would be the best Christmas present EVER
Wow, how wonderful! I hope it's him! I can't wait to hear how it turns out! :)
Wow! :o That would be so fantastic! Hopes and prayers that he's been found and will be reunited with his family. PLEASE keep us posted!
Oh I hope that's him and they can get him HOME for the holidays!!!
Keeping my fingers crossed for luck.
Maybe Saul can help with this. If the folk truly took him thinking him a stray then they might give him back. But if they deliberately took him, they may be worried about legal ramifications. This could be very tricky.

sheepieboss
Of course we can help!

Please give us with all the information you have about the whereabouts of Summit in Juarez and we'll do our best to get your dog back.
Summit has been rescued! I don't know the full details........I wonder if Saul was our hero. Two months..............never give up hope. If I can break away tomorrow I'd like to meet up with Summit when he meets his family and then heads home to Colorado

sheepieboss
I'm so happy for Summit and his owners, this will be a happy holiday season for them :D

I cannot think of a better Christmas present. I love happy endings.
Wow, that is absolutely amazing that he was found and rescued. Yeah for Summit and for anyone who helped!
Oh this brings tears of joy to my eyes and makes me feel so HAPPY for this sheepie and his family!!!
HOORAY!!!!! :D
This gives me goose bumps!! I'm so excited for them!!! How wonderful!!! :D :D
What a Christmas Miracle. I am so happy for them!!! :) :D
That is the best Christmas present anyone could ask for!!!
What FANTASTIC news!! Miracles do still happen! Can't wait to hear more details, but I'm just so very happy for the family!!
Chris
Incredible. Can't wait to hear the details. That is so great.
WooHoo!!!!

Christmas miracles ROCK!!!!
That's so cool!
That is so amazing... I am so very happy for him and his family.... wow....
I can't believe it!!! This is truly a Christmas miracle and I can't wait to hear the entire story as it evolves. I am waiting in anticipation!!!

grab a tissue...you'll need to dab your eyes.
Wow.... again, this happy ending is just so amazing... what a miracle! :)
Finally the Spanish speaking media picked up the story of the missing dog. Almost immediately a gentleman called to say it was his relatives also visiting Albuquerque who saw the dog loose, with no collar and assumed he was a stray and took him home. The caller was hesitant to get his family involved fearing legal ramifications. Finally the Spanish TV station acted as a go-between for negotiations. The family in Juarez immediately drove the dog back to Albuquerque and refused the reward money...which was substantial. The Juarez family was so impressed with the sheepdog, a promise has been made (by somebody) to get the family a rescue of their own.

As you saw from the pictures above, Summit is mighty happy to be home.
What a wonderful story! I am so glad to see a happy ending to this one.
My eyes are really teary reading this story and just goes to show...sometimes true miracles happen.

So wonderful for all involved!

Marianne and the boys
What a great ending! Thankfully Summit was not mistreated and no other harm came to him. The people just thought they were adopting a stray.

The look on that father's face, and seeing the little boy hug Summit was just pure heaven!

I agree! The pictures are terrific -- such joy! It is an amazingly lucky outcome.
It is true that a picture paints a thousand words. The love and joy on their faces says it all.
I was so surprised to see the story on our local news station here in VA. I was just dozing off on Saturday night and they said Summit the sheepdog...and they had video of the boy and the sheepdog. Such a great ending to this story.
I love happy endings. This is so joyful.
I am SOOOOOOOOOO happy to hear that he is home! Brought tears to my eyes! That little boy has got to be SOOOO happy! It is wonderful that he is home!

Merry Christmas (.... on the 9th day of Christmas ..................)
It took awhile to dry my eyes, the looks of joy were incredible :)
It's so great to have a happy ending to such a heart tugging story. I wish they would all turn out that way.
Ahh, I'm all teary eyed now. I'm so glad Summit made it back home to his family. What a touching story.
Yeah, happy endings rule!

Danita and I played a very tiny role on the rescue efforts. We were the ones who got the puppy for the family that adopted Summit. Their kid was very happy when she saw the puppy!
Saul, tell us about the puppy!
Don't make me talk about that Puppy!

Image

I get teary eyed every time I remember her, and it's been less than 24 hours after we took her to the family's home. Danita cried a lot when we took her to them, she was worried about doing what was best for her and was afraid that we were placing her in a bad home. I couldn't cry because I had to drive back.  I'm heartbroken because she's no longer with us. (Somebody call the waaaambulance!)

She is the cutest thing, she cuddled next to Danita for the few hours she was home with us, then she played with her and tried to call her mommy. When I got home to have lunch, the puppy played with me and every time I left the room, she barked and herded me back into the room. Sofa cried when we held her in our arms, she was guarding and keeping her safe all the time. Lennon was very interested in her, but he was all hyper and the little pup was scared of him.

The family we took her in is a christian family, they seemed nice and have a good sized yard where she will be able to play, hopefully she will be loved and cared as Summit was... I would hate myself if they mistreat her in any way.
Saul,

You guys have the biggest hearts. The pup is so cute!!
Where did the puppy come from Saul? Maybe you can be godparent and call periodically to check on her. I hope the family calls you with any questions. She sure is cute!
Adorable puppy! Please tell us the story, Saul. Where'd the pup come from? Was the family looking to adopt a dog? You're so sweet to help out!
As you all know, Summit was stolen from Balloon Fest a couple of months ago. It turned out that the family in NM who took him "adopted" a dog they saw on a yard with a collar on. They claimed that he had no collar on that he was a stray dog.

This NM family gave the dog away to a family in Juarez who took Summit it. He lived with them until the local media ran a story on him and a person reported the dog as he knew where he was. Summit's family contected Juarez family and they agreed to return Summit back and said no to the reward, but since a little girl was very attached to him, the Juarez family were offered an OES pup. Summit was returned to his original family and Danita and I volunteered to find a pup. After jumping trough a lot of hoops, we found a pup in Juarez from a lady who was selling both the mom and the pup because she could not care for them any more. We took her home for a few hours at home... Who can resist a pup? Besides, whe had to see if she was healthy and check her personality... Can you blame us? The Juarez family was a little dissapointed because they were expecting a large dog and the pup was black instead of gray. I did my best to convince them that it's and OES allright, she will be large, furry and gray with time. They were happy with the pup and that seemed to be the end of the story.

Danita and I debated a lot about giving the pup or not. Altough it was my idea and Summit was treated right, I still have my doubts about putting that little pup in that family, they have a place where she will be apble to play and they let Summit sleep inside and interact with the family, but you never know how will a dog be treated in the end.

The family in NM (The ones who took the dog) called Summit's mom and seems that they are trying to get ANOTHER pup from her, with the excuse that the Juarez family was not happy with te pup because the vet told them she was not an OES (Whaaaat?!?!), and the reward money too (THE NERVE!!! They are the ones who took the dog!). In the end she blowed them off and told them that the pup for the Juarez kid and the refund for the travel expenses was all they were going to get. Hopefully this will be the end of the story. Summit is back with his family, The juarez kid (who knew nothing about Summit being a stolen dog) got a dog of her own and the people who stole the dog didn't get anything (Well, almost).

That still leaves me with the question of doing the right thing. On one side, I have a family that wanted to get their dog back and a kid in the midle who didn't know the dog she was given was stolen. On the other had, I had a family who stole a dog and we rewarded them for stealing a dog. Giving the pup meant that I was getting Summit back to his place and making another kid happy, but also that I was awarding someone for stealing a dog. I know that the family that received the pup didn't know the dog was stolen, but I'm still giving a puppy to a family and in that moment I became responsible for her destiny. They were nice and treated Summit right, I'm just hoping they will do the same with the pup.

Thank you for letting me rant, I think we did the right thing, but the bad aftertaste of rewarding someone who stole Summit is still lingering around.
Thanks for telling your story Saul. What an interesting series of events. So, the people in Juarez never knew that Summit was a stolen dog (until they were told about his story?) And, did they know the people in NM who stole Summit, or did they just find them because they were looking for a dog? And when you said the NM people contacted Summit's mom, do you mean the Colorado little boy's mom? Are the NM people dog runners? Sorry, so many questions!

I'm sure the family will take good care of the pup. No one can ever know for certain if they are going to take proper care of the dog (I've known friends who were really good people, but lousy pet owners (not enough time, etc) but it sounds like they were good to Summit. Maybe you could periodically go and check on the puppy just for fun 'visits' to ease your mind...
Wow, Saul! What a story! My head's spinning from trying to figure out all the people involved. I'm so happy that Summit was returned to his family. I'm actually amazed that he was found after all that shuffling around. If the Juarez family had no idea that their "new" dog (Summit) was stolen, then I think everything is okay. I'm sure you already did this, but make sure they have all your contact information in case they run into trouble. Maybe they'd like to join the forum too! You did the right thing. Hugs and kisses
I forgot to mention, the NM family is related to the Juarez family, the person who called when he saw the story is the husband of a family member of the people who stole Summit, he was afraid that Summit was on TV. Seems that the Juarez family didn't know he was stolen, they were told he was "found".

Summit's family is the Colorado Family that's been on TV, and it sems that taking him was a one time thing. They don't know that we own 2 sheepies (And I intend it to be that way!), so I'll have to figure out something to keep an eye on the pup without them knowing about me. They only have my office's number in case they have to call.
What if they read this forum?!? GASP
8O

At least the Juarez family is not interested about getting online and everything has been done over the phone, no eMails have been exchanged.
I cannot believe the nerve of these people that stole Summit!!!  How dare they ask for a reward? They stole the dog. They are lucky there were no charges pressed against them. If it were me. I would have filed charges. So you said this was a one time thing... How do you know? If these people think it's ok to walk into someone's yard and take a dog, then they have probably done it before.
As for the Juarez Family. If they knew about the dog or didn't know....I guess that part doesn't matter. What you did you did for that little girl...who had nothing to do with the whole situation. But how dare they complain about the puppy...
Hopefully the family in Juarez will take care of the puppy. Do they know about how much grooming is required? I would definitely keep an eye on the pup
That makes me sick to my stomach. They steal the dog and then have the nerve to ask for the reward. The reward from me would have been the cops showing up on the freakin' doorstep. Some people just have no conscience.
I've been away for awhile so I thank Saul for keeping us up on the latest. I did know there was a family connection.

Is it really surprising the 3 people who stole Summit would also ask for the reward? The honor goes to the man who stepped up and said he knew where Summit was knowing his family was involved in the thieft.

I sincerely hope you find a way to keep an eye on the puppy. Maybe a book on OES would help convince them the puppy will become gray. ...assuming the litter's father was also an OES.

I think it's wonderful that Summit is home! I'm also glad that the little girl got a puppy. Its so unfair when children have to suffer for the evil doings of an adult. I think what you did was great. To get involved was very generous of you! We salute you and thank you for a job well done! :clappurple:

I also think the puppy will be fine, but perhaps you could make contact with them and just mention (if you haven't already) that you know they only had Summit for a short time and that if they've never had a large dog before, especially one requiring a lot of time and grooming, that you would like them to contact you that you will take the puppy/dog back. Of course, you've probably already said all that.
The pup doesn't really look OES... maybe part oes and part border collie? Or it could just be the pic...
Either way, I can't believe they did that! :x
What a crazy story! 8O Great job Danita and Saul!!!! :D

That puppy is tooooooooooooo cute...how could anyone question him! :D

I love happy endings! :D
What a great story! You and Danita deserve a medal for what you've done to help the family in helping them get a replacement OES, Saul. :-) I hope you are able to keep tabs on their pup. I know that lots of rescue groups do follow-up visits from time to time.

Stacey, I don't understand your post about the pup not being a "pure" OES. It's kinda sucking some joy out of the thread, don't you think? :?

I tend to agree. The puppy is absolutely adorable. Why speculate?

I think this might have been why Stacey wrote that she didn't think the dog was pure OES by looking at it...
Ok everyone !! I finally have a chance to jump online and couldn't believe all the support and responses for my sweet boy Summit.
I have to say that it is SO amazing to have him home and sometimes it is so hard to believe. I have met so many amazing people during the last two months. I met Saul at the very end and he has been a life saver !! I can't tell all of you how grateful I am that I met he and Danita. I don't know how I would have gotten a puppy to the little girl. I wasn't going to buy her a sheepdog in the U.S. and ship it to her.
Summit was in pretty good shape, but completely matted. I hope that they take care of the puppy's coat. Summit also had worms and had lost 7 pounds. I'm sure stress had alot to do with that. I can tell that they didn't abuse him, he is as sweet as ever. We are SO HAPPY to have him back and he acted as if he had never left. It's a true miracle. We also had our son's one year checkup for Thanksgiving and he is cancer free. We are so blessed this holiday season !!!!
Ok....get your kleenex out...I have something to add...there is a man that we don't even know in Boston that bought Garrett a new little sheepdog puppy. Now we have 2 !! I have never met this man, but he is like a Santa Claus. He read about the story from the TX OES rescue webpage and wrote me. I told him that I didn't want to accept his offer, but after many phone calls I realized that it meant as much to him to give Garrett this dog as it meant to us. People are AMAZING. We picked up the puppy the same weekend that we got Summit back. They really like eachother and it's going to be alot of fun.
I'm going to have to write Oprah and hopefully meet the man in Boston and Saul !! So many miracles !
Thanks for all of your wonderful support.
MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!!

P.S. As far as the family that stole the dog. I'm not sure who all is guilty, but they all knew the dog was stolen ....we tried to make the story very sweet and not cast any blame, but in the end they all became greedy !!!!! I did give some money and bought the puppy, but they did give my dog back and that is all that matters for us at this point. I would have rather paid the man that called in, but I couldn't figure out who it was.
We are all so glad things have had a happy ending.
No matter how things sound in the media, there is a world of good people out there. People willing to go that extra mile for their neighbor. Bless them all.
I'm all smiles. What a truly wonderful story! This has turned out to be a wonderful holiday for you and it makes me so happy.

PS If you get on Oprah, let her know you want me to be in the audience! I can't get tickets!

HUGS AND KISSES!
Thanks for writing the update! I'm so happy that all has worked out in the end. What is the new puppy's name? Can you put a picture on the site? :D

I didn't even see this at the time it was posted.... however... just because....

It was just a comment, in regards to the vet saying it is not an oes.... that much is obvious at first glance. (long snipy nose, silky fur, tiny bone structure, tiny pup, shape of head and nose etc )
Saul later confirmed the pup is indeed not OES.
It doesn't really matter, it was just an observation, and in response to the vet knowing it wasn't an oes.
Hello!
How do I get a picture of Summit and Max on this website??
They are too cute together.
I haven't heard anything else from the thieves.....I think after the last phone call she made to me, she realized she shouldn't do it again !!
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year.
Let me know how to post a picture.
Thanks.........
Of course we want pictures.......go up to top under FAQ and you'll find picture instructions. No way I could direct you here, I have to print out the instructions each time and go one step at a time. Oh bother.
