I wonder if anyone can tell me how much these dogs shed? For some reason, I was under the assumption that they had hair that grew (maybe their "shag" look fooled me) and required haircuts. We had a Leader Dog puppy in our home, and we discovered that my daughter has allergies - but this dog was a lab and shed quite a bit. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!! Carla |

Welcome to the forum! If you use the search feature above and type in "Shedding" as a keyword, you will get a lot of useful replies. There's even a topic below called "OES" where a user asks the same question. You will get mixed replies (some say no-shedding, light, heavy).
As far as your daughter having allergies, it doesn't have to do with the amount of shedding since short haired breeds can cause just as much of an allergic reaction as a long-haired, but the amount of dander the dog produces. There's also a protein that's found on their skin and salvia that gets spread around the house. I know some people who are allergic to dogs, but do not have a reaction to their OES. But, on the "good for allergy sufferers" lists I've seen, OES are not listed on there. A lot of times the allergies will get worse for people the older the dog gets (produce more dead skin). |
Thanks Joahaeyo! I didn't notice the search function above (I was using the "google" one and wasn't finding anything). I've also heard of using a conditioner to keep the dander down, or, the groomer I've used for another dog has suggested rinsing them in watered-down fabric softener. |
Welcome to the forum!
If an oes is healthy they shouldn't shed, some hair will come out in brushing (though if you're using the proper tools that isn't much either) and occasionally you will find the odd clump in the corner or on the carpet etc. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. If you don't trim the hair and want an oes in full coat, it is a lot of work to maintain and keep it mat free for the dogs comfort and health. |
My fiance has allergies to our puggle but since we introduced our OES to the house he's been fine. The breeder we got him from said he was hyperallergetic so they wont have a lot of dander which is what most people are allergic too. |
Actually, that's not true-- no dog is hypoallergenic. Some have less dander than others but there is no fool proof allergy free dog. People can have allergies to OES just like any other dog, it really depends on the person. I think there's been a few allergy threads on the forum about this. |
Yep, Jill is correct about no dog being hypoallergenic.
I have horrible allergies to just about anything (non food related) and was tested a few years ago. They did that whole pricking your upper arm with the allergen and see the degree to which you reacted...Anyways, basically I was allergic to everything but horses and dogs...BUT, in reality, I am somewhat allergic to my parents' sheepdog and Barney, as well...so I guess it just depends on the person and the sheepie. |
Huh, I was told by the pet store that he was hyperallergenic...They also had a list of other dogs that were. Well one way or another we haven't had any problems so far.:0) |
