Lost dog, what would you have done?

A few days ago, as I was on my way home, I had to stop in the road to keep from hitting a dog in the road. The community I live in has no leash law, so a dog on or in the road, unfortunately, is not uncommon. As I drove by the dog I noticed that it had its rabies tag and another tag. I debated as to whether to stop or not, but my conscience wouldn't let me keep going. So around I go, watch as another car almost runs over the dog, and finally get her to come to me. She was such a sweet little girl, just gave me all kind of sugars. But anyway, the tag was only for a listing service with a phone and registration #, so I call them while I am sitting on the side of the road. I find out while I am talking to them, that this poor girl was once a "pound puppy". They give me the owners name and number, whom I promptly call and leave a message that I have their dog and my phone number. Well, about four hours later, they call me, say they know where I live and are coming after the dog. When the man gets there to get the dog, he looks at the dog and says "Well Muffy what have you done now?". Those are about the only words that were muttered from his mouth. I guess my questions are, was I wrong for picking up the dog from the middle of the road? Would it have hurt this man to at least have said thank you? Don't get me wrong, I didn't do this to get his praise, but believe me if someone were to find one of my dogs, I would have been falling at his feet thanking him. Don't they realize that this poor dog has already been through alot?

Okay, rant done, thanks for listening.

I'd a done the same thing!! :?
Me too! Definitely.
The world could use more people like you and less irresponsible dog owners.
I'm sure the little dog would thank you if it could.
Poor girl. You did the right thing!!

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound as if the man who adopted her from the pound really cared much about her. :(
:clappurple: You did the right thing...

As for the owner, who knows. We would've taken you for dinner, paid your mortgage and gotten you a new car if Lennon or Sofa were lost and you found them and called us.
I would have done the same thing. When I worked at the pound and they didn't have a number on their tag, I just took them there. Unless of course it was in a neighborhood, then I would take the time to go to every 10 houses or so and ask if they know who this dog belongs to. I can't stand a dog being on or near busy streets, intersections, or the highway. The owners would have to pay a fine b/c their dog got loose (one larger than adopting this dog if they were a stranger), but at least this dog was safe.

A lot of the time, the owners get upset with the pound and say their dog always runs loose during the day and comes home on its own. So basically their owners are aware they are crossing busy intersections. Those are the times I was happy to tell them that there was a fine now they have to pay. It's illegal where we were to ever have a dog w/o a leash and unattended, let along no collar or county tags.
You should be proud of what you did. I'm amazed that someone would get a dog and then not bother to take care of it
You did the only thing a true dog lover COULD do - you helped a dog in need. I would have done the same thing, too.

I hope Muffy didn't get into any trouble when she got home, the poor little thing!

Chris
Helping an animal is always the right thing. It's frustrating how careless some owners are. Even without a leash law, you'd still think you'd want to keep your dog safe, you know? I couldn't imagine taking my dogs out in public without a leash.
I wish there were more people like you, you were very kind, probably saved pooches life.

Tanya
You absolutely did the right thing! :D Even though the owner didn't thank you, I'm sure Muffy did! It sounds like she may have liked to have stayed with you as well! 8O

Good job! :clappurple:
I would hope that someone would do the same thing you did if I ever were to lose Max! Speaking of lost dogs and irresponsibile owners. On last night's local news there was a story of a missing dog. It turns out the owner was doing errands while walking her dog in an area of town that is very dog friendly. She tied her dog to a post (on a very busy downtown street) and ran into kinkos for a minute, then she decided to go across the street to a bar, and have drinks and watch tv (while her poor dog is still tied to the post)!! When she was done, the dog was gone, and now she is playing the victim and can't believe someone could do that!! I just hope her dog is OK. She believes her dog was taken because she received a phone call that night from an anonymous person regarding her dog. I just can't believe how some people can be so stupid, in my opinion!!! I could never tie my dog somewhere and then leave him while I run errands and drink cocktails!!
Unbelievable. A woman who lives in an apartment was applying to adopt one of our barky rescue dogs. When we said he would bark when left alone she said she'd take him everywhere. When I mentioned what about shopping etc. she said no problem. She'd take him with her and leave him tied up outside the store. Needless to say she never got a dog from us, and we never told her why, in case she'd "forget to disclose" this information to another rescue. Some people just don't get it...
I can't believe he didn't even thank you. I swear, people today are just rude!

I would have done the same as you. Good job! :)
Thanks for all of your support! Like I said, I didn't do it to get this mans praise or thanks, I would probably have settled for a kiss my #@*. At least it would have been some kind of emotion. I did get a couple of positive things out of this though. One was knowing I helped Muffy and the other was seeing the look on his grandsons face when he saw Muffy. So, I guess that should be plenty of thanks.
Well, at least you know the grandson was grateful to have Muffy back!! I would have done the same thing in your position. Loose dogs always make me nervous- our neighborhood is FULL of loose dogs that go wondering around. I'm always terrified that they're gonna get hit by a car or injured in some way by a fight with the dog whose yard they wonder into. I know all of the dogs I've seen loose so far, they've all been from the adjoining 5-6 houses around me, but it absolutely FLABBERGASTS me that people let their dogs wonder around. Some are friendly (like the sheltie) some not so much (the akita) but why would you let them wonder around, do their business in a neighbors yard, and not care whether they're safe at home or not? I love being in a nice neighborhood, but I just don't get the loose dog thing at all!

I can say this much- that's not gonna be MY dog, nuh uh!!!! My dog will be staying safely contained in the yard where he/she will be safe from cars and other dangers!!!

Karen :)
