Acupuncture

Our 12 year old Sheepie has arthritis and degenerative myelopathy. The latter is an automimmune disease of the spine. We have tried most, if not all, the different medical prescriptions suggested to ease our pooches pain and make him more limber and comfortable. Acupnucture has been suggested to ease both the arthritis and the myolopathy. Has anyone had any experience with acupuncture in the treatment of either of these diseases? Thank you in advance for your replies.

Yes we used Acupunture the last 6 months of our OES Earl age 14 life. It did help with the pain, but didn't cure him. Earl did seem better after a treatment, so it was not a waste of time or money.

Hello, Paul,
Thank you for your kind response about acupuncture. I have been dragging my feet about bringing Jake, partially because we kept thinking it was going to be his last week for the past two months. I am heartened to hear that your Earl did seem to derive some comfort from the procedure.

Are you now owned by another Sheepie?
Our last OES, Merlin suffered from hip dysplasia and we tried everything there was to try to make him more comfortable, including accupuncture. I think that our expectations for relief/cure for this disease were a little high, but the accupuncture treatments definately made him feel better and therefore were certainly not a waste of money in the least.

The doctor (who came to the house to do the treatments!) was so in love with Merlin, you could see it on her face that she felt that she had failed and kept coming to see him, even after the series of treatments were completed, just to make him feel better and to play with him. I had a very hard time with calling her about 6 months later to tell her of his passing.

So all in all, I can only recommend the treatments without being able to speak to the overwelming results. The doc did tell us of miraculous recoveries with everything from cats to dogs to gerbills and I believe that she was completely sincere.

Hope this helps and that your friend is feeling better soon!

Cheers.

Acupuncture helped our "PRINCE" live with less pain for the last year of his life. It was wonderful to see him move about like a puppy after a treatment. Do try it, you might be suprised in the results. Do not get your hopes to high. It does not work for everyone. I did not beleave when we started but I DO NOW.
Hi:
You might want to take your baby to a holistic vet. My baby died of mast cell cancer at age 12, however my allopathic vet gave him 3 months to live. I searched and researched alternative medicines and I know there is help for your baby with holistic medicine. My boy lived 1 1/2 years longer having a holistic vet and with a good quality of life. I now have 2 vets; 1 allopathic, 1 holistic. If you need more information or help, let me know. I wish all the best for your baby.

Dear Kevin, Mark and Carol,
Thank you all for your kind responses. I know some memories must be difficult.
Jake just had his first treatment tonight. He does not seem worse for the experience, which the vet had said might happen, so that's good. He has another appointment on Thursday. The vet said it usually takes 3-4 weeks to tell if the treatments are helping, so we will go through the full treatment.
I apologize for answering yall as a group, but I am new at this forum replying and cannot figure out how to reply individually. (My computer guru husband is out of state.)
Thank you again for your replies. Everyone seems to have had a positive experience and all your sheepies seemed to have benefited, which is heartening to read. I know this is not a cure, but we want Jake to be comfortable as can be while he wants to be around.

Joan -

You did just fine on the reply side! And I would totally agree not to expect too much from the first visit with accupuncture. From my experience with Merlin a few years back, it was something that seemed cumulative as the treatments went on. You are being very realistic, in my opinion, of not thinking of this as a cure, but as a way to help your friend be more comfortable. I say a prayer for him and wish you both the best.

Just wanted to post an update on Jake and his experiences with acupuncture.
Thr first three treatments seem to provide terrific relief for Jake, almost a curative effect. The next three sessions brought no improvement and coincided with a decline in Jake's mobility. the past two treatments seemed to have had a positive effect so we will continue.
Our vet suggested we try the electrical muscle stimulation at home. Jake has to go to the groomer for his spring shave and then we can start.
thank you all for listening.

Another update on Jake. As I had mentioned previously, the acupuncture did not seem to helping Jake; it wasn't hurting, but he did not seem to enjoy it. So, we discontinued the acupuncture and decided not to proceed with the electrical muscle stimulation. In the meantime, Jake has developed a long-lasting UTI which is being treated with Baytril. He has lost about 8 pounds in the past month. The weight loss seems focused on his rear end: his hindquarter and back legs seem thinner and are very weak. We know he is losing muscle tone. The electrical muscle stimulation was to help rejuvenate his muscle tone.
Jakie still enjoys eating and going for rides. He cuts shorts his daily walks to a few minutes and the bare necessities unless we are in new surroundings. Then, he wants to keep on sniffing and walking, until I have to remind him to get back to the car or motorhome, so he won't collapse.
Any suggestions for increasing muscle tone?
Thank you in advance, as always.
Joan
I wanted to let you know of a supplement that we treated our sheepie with when he was diagnosed at 1 year with hip dysplasia. It is cosequin DS and you can get it at your vets. It has glucosamine and I experimented with him to see if it helped. We gave it to him and I know that it takes a few weeks to kick in. It really helped with his achiness when getting up and with walking. I then didn't give to him for a few weeks and he went downhill from there. So it really helped with pain and movement. I even take this for my knees and wrists. You can get it at your local health food store. I also had gold beads implanted in my OES when he was 2 and this procedure was done from a vet who specialized in accupuncture. The beads stimulate muscle mass and he really did well after this procedure. When he was four we started taking him for accupuncture, a few times a week. This helped also. Good luck with your sheepie.
Well here's one more owner with a good acupuncture experience. We had a 13-year old who was diagnosed with diabetes, and she also had the old-age related arthyritis. We took her for acupuncture every few weeks - she was very relaxed during it, and I believe it helped her with the pain. I do know that it also helped lower her blood sugar, as we tested it immediately following the treatment. She has since passed on from cancer, but I would definitely do acupuncture again if need be.
