First night home

We have just brought home a 2 year old OES from the local pound. Very skinny, just eaten a huge bowl of food, and loving the cuddles on his first night (now known him for 3 hours!). Any suggestions for our first night and first weekend?

Give him lots of love. He will need time to ajust. Let him rome the house to smell his new home. Take him out often. The yard will be his freind. Where do you put him to sleep at night. Is he crated? Give him toys and chews. Talk to him. Thats it for now. I have had 3 rescues. Good luck.
Whats his name.
Congratulations!! I was given the advice not to introduce many new things (people, places) all at once but to give him a good week to completely settle into the home environment before having friends over, going on walks, going other places, etc. Giving a sense of calm stability is more important than variety and fun -- or so I'm told.

Looking forward to hearing how its going -- and seeing pictures. 8O
Good for you for rescuing him!
Do you know much about his history, that may help you help him adapt to your home as well. :)
Congratulations on your new boy! Thank you for rescuing!!

Val's advise was good! Just relax and enjoy him - he'll understand love he feels! :D
I agree with Val...Id keep it low key for the first week or so...just keep lovin' the cutie pie....Im sure he knows!
How wonderful that you were able to rescue him. I bet he's feeling the love already. Affection and calm help make a good transition. Big Sheepie hugs to you.
Congratulations! And welcome :D
Congrats to you. I have three dogs here. When I brought Pepsi into the house we just went about our normal routine to get him used to all of us.
He had our routine down in no time. He had a couple of accidents the first night...either accidents or was marking his territory he was not neutered. The first night was the only time he did that. He was neutered the next week. We tried to crate him and he would have no part of that when we were home. Once he learned how to use the dog door he has had full run of the house.
Good Luck

I'm also new here. I live in Louisville KY. Patch is almost 4 years old - will have had her 3 years in November. She is the light of my life and just one adorable dog. She is also a certified therapy dog where we visit nursing homes and a hospital. I really enjoy reading the various posts.[/quote]
Yay! Congrats on your new baby!

I agree that just letting him get settled without interuption is the best way to go! Our rescue Murphy, was given space to sniff and wander, under my watchful eye of course  and get settled on his own terms! In the first 15 minutes he did some marking  but has been an angel ever since...he really is the best sheepie I've ever had! :D Don't tell Gooch! 8O He was up on the couch with me within the first hour of being here, cuddling! :D He hasn't stopped since!j

I hope you were able to get some background on him! That always helps when you start introducing new people and situations!

Murphy is going for his first big outing today! We are driving into the city for Bark in the Park for a portrait to raise money for our local rescue! I am confident that all will be great! And we are all looking forward to it! The Gooch and Murph have there new Halloween bandana's and are looking very handsome! They are going to be a big hit I'm sure...

Just take everything slow! He will let you know what and when he's ready for new fun things!

Give him a big sheepie hug from all of us! Murph especially wants to give his paw for a big high five! Nothing better than finding a family for forever! :)
Congrats on your new addition . Its great that you rescued him. The one thing i have to say dont give him big dinners at first just small but frequent amounts . He is gonna love you for the rest of his life . thats something to look forward to no matter how hard it will be to get him to settle. :P :P :P
