I'm planning a trip to Ruidoso, NM to have Lennon play in the snow. So far, the national forest allows dogs, but I'm not shure if the snow is the forest or you got to go to the ski area. Anyone that's been to Ruidoso that can share some info?? Thanks!! |

I have been to Ruidoso twice. Once during the spring and once during Christmas.
It snows in the moutains the best. Ruidoso is in the mountains. We never went to the ski lifts, as mom and dad had 8 kids and no money. We went to a Good Will store for the coats and gloves. When we got there we bought one of the first plastic sauser-like sleds ever on the market for about $10 and we took turns going down the hills outside our rather small sparsely furnished cabin. That was in the 1970's. Went there 2 years ago for a high school reunion (my husband's--he's from El Paso) and it was gorgeous. Victor says when it snows it snows on all of the mountains. There's a web site and a phone number which gives you weather up-dates, with snow reports. And we saw lots of pets there. Wish we could go there this Christmas! My girls would love to see more than just wisps of falling snow! But it will have to wait. |
We live next to El Paso Too! Where did you see all the pets? We weren't allowed in the Ski Apache slopes with Lennon, but that made us go to an even better place. Here's our trip details:

My husband said those pets I saw were probably the owners pets. We stayed in a lodge and then in some cabins. The girls found a cat and some dogs to play with at both places.
I will try to post some photos after Christmas. I really am swamped right now. Sorry your dog wasn't allowed on the slopes, but we never went on the slopes. They are higher up than where we stayed. We don't ski, so we just did some horse back riding and hiking. And we went to the amusement park. Merry Christmas! |
I see. On the cabins there's a lot of people and we say people walking their dowgs in town all over the place, there are some cabins that are pet friendly so you can take your OES overnight. Since the snow season just started, the town doesn't have much snow so you have to go up the mountain. On mid January/February there's snow in the national forest and there you can take your dog to have fun in the snow without any trouble.
Merry XMas to you too! |
I let my daughters read your post. Now they want to go to Ruidoso for their next 4 day week end in February and take Abbi with us. We found two hotels along the way that allow dogs too.
I will have to think about it. It's over a 15 hour drive for us, but we could stop in El Paso and visit abuelita. And they could see some real snow. I wonder how Abbi will react to it? Hope you are having a Good and Safe New Year's! |
Thanks, our holidays were fun. Lennon had a chance to eat all the turkey and tamales he wanted at abuelita's place... Now we have to convince him that his usual chow is as good for him as tamales
15 hours driving is quite a drive! From El Paso is only 3 hours, so is not that bad, and staying at a hotel or cabin in Ruidoso is an excellent idea for enjoying the town and 2 days of snow. I'm pretty shure that Abbi will love the snow, they love cold stuff. If you go to Ruidoso and go to the sky area, take the scenic paths that are around the slopes. Abbi will be able to run free for a while and there will be no people she can bump into. |
Thanks! I am still not sure we can go this year though. I am suppose to have this huge surgery in the Spring, so I need to get stuff finished and taken care of before that. If I get to work on it now maybe we can go on one more trip to some snowy mountains!
Thanks again for all the information. |
