One of their latest 'options' is to expand the current airport and build a second runway. First problem...the current SD airport is pretty much right downtown, so it's not like it is out in the country with room to expand. They want to put this second runway in the Midway district of SD, which is pretty close to the current airport. MY problem with that...you have to eliminate nearly 11,000 homes, plus a very heavy business population. Now, this idea was proposed in all seriousness by the committee assigned to this topic. My question is, how can they seriously think that 11,000 homes are going to want to be sold (ANd, they must be sold to the city for fair market price, which the lowest house price in this area is probably 600,000--can you imagine, broke SD buying 11,000 homes for $600,000 on up, EACH!) Crazy. My opinion is that the only time of year that San Diego airport ever is crowded is during the holidays (which EVERY airport in the country is, no matter how big) and crowded means maybe a half hour wait to go through security....It seems like residents and tourists alike can get to and from San Diego without a problem....so why does the city even need a new or expanded airport? |

I'd agree - my company is headquartered in San Diego. I'm there 5-10 times a year and I've never had an issue with long security lines. At least, not compared to other airports that are a constant nightmare, like Newark, O'Hare and certain terminals at LAX. Considering the fact that most of the population is moving east because they can't afford to live along the coast I would think that a new airport would be built to the east so that locals wouldn't have to fight the downtown traffic to get to the airport. |
Didnt they already expand it????? So. Cal. has so many small airports that I dont know why San Diego's has to get bigger....heck Im flying out of Carlsbad......who the heck even knew that Carlsbad had an airport!!! |
No, they haven't expanded it yet...They've just been talking about it FOREVER!
Sue, I hadn't even thought about that--that so many people are moving east that a more easterly one would be useful for commuter or for people coming back home to SD...It's also sad that everyone has to move east...all my friends who grew up by the water and love it there are forced to move inland if they want to buy a house... |
