Stars against puppy mills It's a hike, but animal rights activists such as "GoodFellas" actor Paul Sorvino, "Exorcist" star Linda Blair and Poison drummer Rikki Rockett will be part of the Puppymill Awareness Day on Saturday (September 17) at the Intercourse Community Park in Lancaster. The event, starting at 10 a.m., will raise awareness about puppy mills that breed dogs under cruel conditions and overpopulate the animal world. More info at awarenessday.org. |

Hurrah!!!!!! Lancaster Penn. is right in the middle of Amish Puppymill Country......I don't think that most people are aware of what is going on in all the barns........We are doing a new webpage and all the info about puppymills, dog auctions, and commercial breeders will be on it.......It is about educating the general public abourt this Horrible Problem..........Kaye |

For real? Seriously, I wish I were closer. It's a great cause and I don't need an excuse to see Rikki Rockett. I know he's not Bret Michaels, Mandy, but... |
Okay, make fun of the Pennsylvania Dutch names and get it out of your system.
Intercourse Blue Ball Bird in Hand And Rikki Rocket's dad still lives in the neighborhood so I'm going to guess he'll be home during that time. May the stalking begin! Here is the website for the organization that is hosting the event. http://www.awarenessday.org/main.htm Unfortunately, I have prior commitments that day or I'd be there. They get a tremendous amount of support at their events though. There are actually people doing something! WooHoo! |
I heard that some people even perpetuate the goofy names thing by naming their cottages things like Morningwood Estates. Who would do that?

Don't forget Paradise |

Poison rocked. No one did tight pants and big hair as well as they did. If you're going to stalk him, definitely bring your camera! |
Mandy's husband gets phone calls from BRET MICHAELS. How cool is that? |
They're from the next town over. Local stalking makes for lower gas bills. |
I like Rikki Rocket. Wasn't he a hairdresser before he was in the band?
On topic. I truly believe education is the cure for most ills. I never knew the Amish were involved in puppy mills. |
The Amish LOVE their puppy mills because it is a huge money maker for them. This is a renewable crop that doesn't need that much care. Their initial cost is low because dogs are plentiful and cheap. It's not just one harvest a year but more like 3 or 4 or more times per year per dog. The weather doesn't affect their crop either especially in the slow winter months when their agricultural crops are gone. It's also not labor intessive for them like agricultural crops or even crafts such as their quilts.
Let's just say they pay $1000 for 2 dogs, $500 a piece. If they breed those dogs and get 4 puppies and sell them for $500 a piece, they've already doubled their inital investment. (It's not like they put a lot of money into feed, labor or vets so all profit.) They then breed them again and all profit. They do this over and over again multiple times a year. They don't think of these dogs as pets, or family members, they barely think of them as living creatures. To them, dogs are just a crop. If you've never been to a puppy mill, count yourself very lcuky. Then again, if more people would actually see what goes on there, maybe more people would do something about it. Hmmmm |
I wished I lived closer! I'd be there in a heartbeat!
A friend of mine was just telling me that a friend of hers adopted a rescue English Bulldog. This poor baby has a mangled face and her legs are stunted due to living in a too small cage for her whole life just having litter after litter! She was found abandoned! Guess it was too much money for the puppy mill to PTS this poor girl! She will be loved now though! These stories have to end! Puppy mills are just disgusting! |
That makes me ill to hear about the Amish and puppy mills. The Amish have the reputation of being so religious. I suppose in some twisted way they see this as "God's work." I mean no disrespect to those who are Christian and try to live their lives accordingly.
What can we (or I) do to help? This is a philosophical question. I always feel that one person cannot make a difference. Hopefully I am wrong. |
