There is no room, but also no place for these dogs to go. CNN has been alerted but they may not get there in time to film it. Second, humane societies from all over the country are coming in and taking dogs daily, and this includes the Rottweilers. They will be given 14 days and then adopted out. Several problems with this, including it doesn't give the owners (these are not strays, these are dogs from New Orleans that were rescued) a chance to find them. Double punishment for those who lost their homes and triple travesty for those who were also abandoned too long at the Super Dome. Now their pets are being shipped all over the United States and adopted out to others. I understand the legal problems, but we need Louisiana to wave the 14 day holding period, and that only shelters can take them. They need to let good groups like us, American Rottweiler Club, a parent club under AKC take the Rottweilers. We have offered to foster them and keep them for six months, and spay and neuter all of them. But this is falling on deaf ears. Please help. We need to write the governor of Louisiana and also the HSUS, Humane Societies and SPCA immediately. Phone calls too. In their haste, they are forgetting these animals are owned by individuals affected by this disaster and there are foster homes ready to document and hold many of these dogs. While I understand this is a huge problem of great magnitude never seen before, these dogs are not being treated humanely nor given a chance for their owners to find them. Thanks, Lew !!!!!!!!!! |

Some States and Cities { Houston } are lifting the 14 day waiting period......Their main concern was that these Babies were going to legimate rescues and not PUPPYMILLS to be bred.....Not all of the Babies have been spayed and neutered.....Another problem in rescues taking them in.......At least this is one step in the right direction to get them out into rescue and then fostering homes.......Kaye |
I wonder how many other parent breed clubs are stepping up to the plate like the Rotty group... It's great to see them taking the initiative to protect the owners of these animals from suffering more heartbreak by providing long term foster homes until the owners can reclaim the animals- if they can just get a hold of the dogs to do it in the first place! Things seem to be so chaotic down there right now... there just aren't any sytems in place to handle a disaster like this in so many fronts...

Had that email come from someone on the ground that didn't have much experience rescuing....I might not have been quite as concerned.....Lew is owner of one of the largest groups on Yahoo and is the smartest person I know on Canine Nutrition.....She just happens to do Rotts...... I think as most situations where a number of people from differnt orgs are involved the situation becomes confusing......Too many Chiefs and not enough Indianas.....They are even fighting as to which Humane Society is in charge......You throw sincere people from the ASPCA, SPCA, Humane Societies, Best Friends. HSUS and many others ..The Babies get caught in the middle.......Hopefully they will hash this out and get the Babies Out......Hopefully The Breed Clubs will step up to the plate and do their share.......Many have already!!!!!!! Sheepie Hugs, Kaye |
