Does Anyone Else Work with People with No Sense of Reality?

Allow me to vent for a moment:

Why does it seem that the people in the highest positions seem to have gotten there by sheer irresponsibility and stupidity alone?

Why do people offer to take on projects, but then realize that the day before they are due, they have no idea where to start and push them on you anyway? Not to mention the fact that if you would've taken the project on in the first place, it could've been done months ago.

Why do people who have no idea how to hold an event insist on having input in how the event goes, in the form of a 15 person "committee" then not bother taking notes to remember his or her assignment and call you the day before the event to ask if you've done their part for them? Then change everything anyway?

Lastly (at least for these purposes), how does all sense of what is possible within a given timeframe go out the window when it's something that they need someone else to do for them? However, turn the tables, and expect to wait months for something on minor requests.

And to think this is academia. It's like the blind leading the blind.

LOL! You've summed it up. Academia is clueless......and we send our children their to have their brains sucked up and stuffed with WHAT??

Wonder how many in academia would survive the REAL world?

As a supermarket cashier, why do the guys that keep changing the software never go through the line when the changes don't work, or why don't they try checking out someone on a busy Sat. with their stupid changes.

And why doesn't the decision makers at headquarters check out the situation in the stores when they make changes: We had a nice seating area in the front of the store with tables for people who wanted to get lunch from the deli and have lunch there. The big wigs remodelled the area for further productivity - leasing the area to a UPS store, then moved the lunch area to a spot right next to the restrooms - Yuch; reminds me of when I was a kid and had to stand in line next to the outhouse at summer camp! :twisted:
I totally understand!!!! I'm sorry to hear you're in this situation because I know it creates stress and major migraines!!! I always had the urge to slap something real hard on the back of their heads in hopes something clicks. ....not that it would help.

That's why I hate group projects/work in the office when there are people like that. You always end up doing their crap just to make sure it's done right!
Unfortunately, it's the same everywhere. The corporate world is full of people who have somehow risen to postions of control with little to no common sense at all.

I used to think about that every time I considered switching jobs. But, I figured "better the devil you know....". :evil:

Just have Clyde come to work with you and piddle on their feet. That should cure them.

I like to say "I'm surrounded by incompetence AND incompetents." That covers everyone and everything.
I'll loan you Bentley, he can jump on everyone and chew on them while Clyde does his thing on their feet.

Then we'll come to my office and take care of the morons here.

I think we're all talking about the "Peter Principle" which I understand to mean incompetent personnel are promoted upstairs because they can't get things done; the more incompetent, the higher they go.

I go to tons of meetings but they're meetings that the useless people call. When we sit down, everyone looks to me to start and lead the meeting. I am the youngest person at the table 99% of the time. You would think their years of "experience" would allow them to effectively run the meeting.

Then their useless meeting keeps me from getting actual work done.
The Peter Principle isn't quite that cynical. Here is what it is:

"In an organization, people tend to rise to their level of incompetence."

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense! If you do well, you get promoted, and you keep getting promoted until you don't do well any more.

I had a VERY brief foray into Nursing Management a few years ago, fortunately I had the good sense to cut it short before someone cut it short for me. I discovered that mostly management ment going to meetings and because sitting still for an hour or more is a fate worse than death for me, I simply just didn't go to the meetings :twisted: (I could usually be found working on the floor with the nurses) Well you can imagine how well THAT went over!!!
Thanks Ron. I think my version is more realistic, though: let's call it Barney's principle. :D
