Flea and Tick Shampoo - Use it even if he doesn't have it?

Hey There,

We're going to give Hendrix a bath this weekend and I thought I'd buy Flea and Tick shampoo to use this time as a preventive measure. Will it harm the dog to use it if there is no evidence of fleas or ticks?

I decided to do it since my boss told me a gresome story of her blood hound today. She said the dog had a sore on his body and she went to stop the bleeding, to make sure the bleeding stopped she squeezed the sore and out popped a living worm?!?! Apparently it was a fly larva and they can burrow into a dogs skin. With that said I thought, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to wash Hendrix in Flea and Tick shampoo. Thought I'd ask you all here first though!

EEEwwww!! That's just gross!!

I don't think it would hurt him, but...do you use Frontline or Advantage? I'd read the labels to be sure, just in case of interaction problems.

Have fun at bathtime!
We use Front Line, I'll look at the box and check. Thanks, I never thought that would effect his skin.

Yes, the worm incident is absolutly gross, my boss actually put the live worm in a zip lock for the vet to check out. I told her, I'd need the zip lock for my lunch that would come up.

No kidding!! Me too!!
8O Oh yuck!!!! That is just, completely utterly nasty... EEEWWWWW!!! Quick where is the bug spray?! Shudder...

Karen :)
Gross.....
Anyway, no, I would not use anymore pesticides on him that are unnecessary... all of these products are poisons, so I would certainly limit their use to situations where they are called for.
I just finished eating dinner and read this post! You should have put a note that said "if you just ate, don't read this!

It gives new meaning to Barf. Kidding aside: how's the dog doing?
I don't think regular fly larvae burrow into living flesh- unless it
was some exotic kind of fly. Bot and screw fly larvae may - but it is
not possible for regular old flies to consume living tissue.
Hope the poor guy turned out ok!

OMG...GROSS! 8O

I agree with Stacey to be careful with how many chemicals you put on him! If you are giving meds for heartworm a lot of them have flea and tick prevention as well! Maybe ask if the houndy was taking these?
Thanks for the tip! We opted not to put the flea and tick shampoo on him.

Cesar, the wormed blood hound, is doing just fine. The vet confirmed it was a fly that layed an egg of some sort in his skin. SOO GROOSS.

Sorry for ruining dinner!
